Europe Holiday 2018

Jan 11, 2018 - DUBAI

I made it to Dubai. The flight was about as good as it gets. I got three seats across both from Seattle to D.C. and from D. C. to Dubai so since I am short, I can stretch out. I've had quite a time to rest. The flight from DC was late so I had to race through the air port to make my next flight. When I finally made the plane, my phone said "workout detected". No kidding! Now I am drinking wine and chatting with my seat mate who is a young Brittish geologist who is working with ruby mines in Mozambique.

Sep 22, 2017 - Ao Nang/Singapore/Dubai

Won’t bore you with same-same details of Ao Nang – suffice to say we came away slimmer and more relaxed! We then had another 2 day stopover in Singapore. This time we avoided the theme parks, malls and the glitzy high-rises. Discovered East Coast Park, a 20 km stretch of reclaimed land running parallel to the bay near our hotel. Had to walk through the enormous city block of high-rise government owned units (the ones I mentioned with numbers rather than names) and under a pedestrian underpass to get there. Holy smoke – apart from...

Aug 28, 2017 - Coming home

We are leaving for the airport now. The long trip home begins...... Good bye Norway Hello Dubai Gordon wanted to add one of many stories not yet put into writing: Post Scriptum: Whilst bouncing along a bumpy dirt road in the middle of Mongolia some weeks ago, the non-English speaking driver kept turning to Liz (she was in the front passenger seat - if she can’t be the captain, she likes to be the vice-captain), gesturing to me in the back, and putting his fingers to his nose. Liz was (quite rightly) offended by his observation. She...

Aug 1, 2017 - Dubai, UAE

Monday 31st July 2017 Dubai Up late today, then to breakfast. At about 11:00am, we went out. It was a scorching hot day, up to about 48C, so we walked down to the creek and had a ride on an abra up and back for about half an hour. An abra is a boat with a seat down the middle of the boat where passengers look outwards, it has a cover over the seating area and the driver sits in a place below deck and it has a rudder manually operated by the driver. There are many tall buildings and floating restaurants along the creek and although hot, it...

Jul 30, 2017 - Kampala to Dubai

Sunday 30th July 2017 Kampala Uganda to Dubai We didn't need to get up early today so had breakfast around 8:00am, then packed our bags and our guide Adrian came and picked us up around 10:30am for the drive out to the airport, across the city and out to Entebbe about 40-45 km away near the shores of Lake Victoria. It took us about 1 and a half hours to get to the airport. The other people in our group were flying earlier than us so after we checked in, we had to wait a couple more hours. Very smooth 5+ hours to Dubai, arriving about...

Jul 18, 2017 - Sydney to Dubai, UAE

Tuesday 18th July 2017 Warrimoo to Dubai Left in the afternoon and caught the train to the airport. Travelled uneventfully to Dubai by Emirates Airlines amid a cacophony of wailing children but fortunately none sitting behind us so no kicks to our seat backs - a luxury indeed! It was a very smooth flight and the meals were enjoyable. Arrived very early morning in Dubai for our connecting flight to Entebbe, Kampala, Uganda and sat around the airport for about 4 hours before it was time to board.

Jun 25, 2017 - Spending the Day in Dubai

What a day we had. With our ticket on the Emirates airline, we got a voucher to spend time at the Copthorne Airport Hotel. We had a room that we could shower and rest in plus access to the buffet restaurant. After a bit of a rest and a meal, we decided to take advantage of city tour with Sun Tours. We got to see some really interesting sights while we drove around the city and stopped for photo opportunities along the way. Dubai is one of seven nations in the United Arab Emirates and the second largest. It contains commercial...

May 24, 2017 - The first leg

Well our latest adventure is now under way and we've been in Dubai since our flight from Perth on Monday. Wednesday 24 May means it's time to carry on to our next destination, Barcelona. While in Dubai we've been staying at the Dusit Thani hotel, our favourite in Dubai. On Tuesday we spent time on a tour of the city, its beaches and sites like mosques, the Sheikh's Palace, the museum and the souks. We also made a trip up to Level 148 of the Burj Khalifa before the checking out the view from the lower viewing decks on levels 124 and 125....

May 16, 2017 - Dubai -1st leg to London

First part of the flight was great. Not a full plane so lots of space to spread out and excellent service. Unfortunately only dozed a little. Once we landed it was a quick power walk through customs to find the next gate. Would have liked to stop at the shops and look around but thought I should locate gate first. Only arrived with 15 mins spare before boarding so will have to take a look on the return flight.Only thing was I should have grabbed some water for next leg..note to self to remember in future.

May 14, 2017 - Dubai - UPDATE NOTES

Hi All, So we have had 4 nights in Dubai. We were not sure what to expect apart from the weather and it did not dissapoint. It was hot, very hot for us and very bright when outside, walking around was not an option. Our primary source of transport was the hop on, hop off bus that seemed to take us everywhere we wanted to go with the exception of 2 souks that we wanted to see but planning to do that in a Friday was a mistook. Holy Day so closed, bugger. For a city to grow to these heights in 40 years is amazing, the buildings are just over...
