Sep 1, 2006 - Kampala - 'Pick Pockets'
Back tracked to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, where we are staying at the Blue Mango. Arrived quite early about 11am. Set up our tents and went into town. Had a wander around nothing to grand. On the way out I wanted a ride on one of those mad bikes that are used as a type of taxi. Ed and I waved the girls off and went to find a couple. the ride was what was expected. Hairy. Just had to make sure that your knees were tighter to the bike than the guy riding. then there was no chance of getting them ripped off on a lorry or car. Also had to...

Aug 31, 2006 - Entrebbe (Uganda) - 'Lake Victoria'
Left Turbo about 0830 and headed for Entrebbe (Lake Victoria, second largest lake in the world) crossing the border into Uganda. Not really sure why we are staying here as we are back tracking on ourselves tomorrow. It is quite nice though. On the way we stopped at a Caltex garage (nothing like giving your money to the locals). Met four lads of about 12yrs selling peanuts. They knew more about our football teams than anyone on the truck. They said something that really brought home what I was doing. 'It costs about 12,500 ugandan shillings...

Aug 23, 2006 - Still driving
There were dogs in the campsite that never shut up barking last night, I couldn't find my earplugs so there wasn't much I could do. Everyone was ready to kill the dogs at breakfast. Apparently when the hippos come out of the water down at the lake the dogs just go ballistic! Day 2 of the long drive. We arrived in Kampala, capital of Uganda this evening. We elected to upgrade to a dorm room so we wouldn't have to be taking a tent down at 4:30am tomorrow.

Apr 8, 2006 - Kampala
All roads seem to lead to Kampala! Well at least for us they do. This is our third time here, and it is only for the one night before catching bus to Nairobi tomorrow morning. We are starting to feel like we know the centre of this city now. We are booked on the only 'luxury' bus in Africa for our last long trip. This means we not only get a seat to ourselves, but it is a big seat with leg room, breakfast but not sure what that will be, and guaranteed good suspension for those bumpy roads of Kenya! Not too bad for $20 US per ticket

Apr 4, 2006 - Kampala
Oh boy, what a journey. The first part of it almost ranks with our night bus hell journey in Malawi. We were actually picked up in the dark at our hotel by a very old looking bus which was already packed. There were no other choices from this out of the way place. I had booked a ticket which guaranteed that we sat together, so people had to move for us. Then they crammed even more in so all the corridors were full and people were leaning all over me (Tony this time) And on top of all that, it had poured with rain through the night and we...

Mar 29, 2006 - Kampala, Uganda
Our longest drive yet - over 800kms, 18 hours!! 3 countries, 2 border crossings which slowed us a lot - but the road was terrible pretty much the whole way, so we are pretty shattered now in Kampala, capital of Uganda, but relaxing in a very nice backpackers - first one we have stayed in for a while. We are in a self contained room with a beautiful garden view in the middle of the city! Uganda is well known for its bird life, and even here in Kampala, there are a number of parrots in the trees squawking away. Anyway, I (Tony) was amazed by...

Mar 2, 2006 - Elections
(Dateline - Mukono) Last week saw Uganda holding its first multi-party election since 1980 with voting for Members of Parliament (MPs), District Women MPs, and of course the big race, the presidential election. While there was field of five the election was ultimate a two horse race pitting Yoweri Museveni the current president and leaders of the National Resistance Movement against Dr. Kizza Besigye his former doctor and associate from the bush war. Museveni has been in power for twenty-years attaining leadership of Uganda when his...
