Jun 28, 2009 - Mt. Nemrut

From Malatya embarked on a side trip to see the statues atop Mount Nemrut. Built in 62BC, it is believed to be the tomb/sanctuary of King Antiochus. Large, seated statues sit on the mountain, with the heads of the statues eerily toppled to the groumd - the statues are in the likeness of King Antiochus; various Greek, Armenian, and Persian gods; lions; and eagles. We stayed at a hotel very near the summit and caught both sunset and sunrise.
