Sep 19, 2009 - Passage South part 2: Romania to Bulgaria

Romania, Passage Romania to Bulgaria Wednesday August 19, 2009 Since we got a late start from Odessa, our plan to get to Romania changed a bit. We stopped in Sulina, Romania, at 0910. We clear in with the authorities, who remember us from our visit last month. Quick stop at the market, and we settle in for a quiet night. Thursday, August 20, 2009 We plan to motor out the 5 mile channel before dawn, but when we start out at 0405 it is just too dark. There are no lights once we pass the village. So we turn around, tie up again, and wait...

Sep 9, 2009 - "Why Did You Come to Ukraine?"

“Why Did You Come to Ukraine?” We’ve been in the Ukraine for almost 3 weeks now, and on several occasions we had an English conversation with locals. One of the questions they all asked was “Why did you come to Ukraine?” They seemed surprised that we would visit their country; we were surprised at the question. Our answer was usually “because we can”. Why pass up a chance to see a communist country (or recently communist)? We’ve seen some wonderful things here in this former Soviet country, and we’ve really enjoyed it. Here are some overall...

Sep 1, 2009 - Trip to Kiev, Ukraine

Odessa and Trip to Kiev Wednesday Aug 5 – Aug 14, 2009 From Wednesday, the 5th to Friday the 14th, we stay in Odessa, just doing normal work and make plans to visit Kiev. Sunday night we walked out to the Opera House for a performance. This theatre is magnificent. Originally built in 1887, it got a thorough restoration in 1967. They used 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of gold!! Absolutely breathtaking. My photos do not do it justice. We did not see the Ballet which is the pride of the theatre; they do not perform in the summer. The concert we...

Aug 29, 2009 - Passage Sulina, Romania to Odessa, Ukraine

Ukraine July 28-29 2009 Passage: Sulina, Romania to Odessa, Ukraine We checked the weather patterns and it seems to be a good time for the overnight passage to Odessa. Up anchor from Mile 8 ½ on the Danube, and we are underway at 0755. We are rollin’ down the river again, and arrive in Sulina at 0930. Here we must fuel up, so Artemis ties up alongside the fuel barge, while Gemini bumps into a dock to wait. Sadly Gemini got a few scraps from this one. A little confusion with the authorities about permission to buy fuel, but we finally get...

Jul 17, 2009 - Romania Tour

Land tour of Romania July 8-15, 2009 We secured the boats in Mangalia, Romania, on the Black Sea coast. Our rental car was a Dacia. The marina is new and quite nice. We drove west across Romania and found lots of fields of sunflowers, wheat and potatoes. Fields as far as the eye could see. The roads in this country are pretty good, but the drivers are maniacs!!! They ignore any speed limit signs, and just pass whenever they feel like it!! Al is a good, safe driver though, so we are safe. Driving west from the coast to Bucharest, we have...

Jul 5, 2009 - Balchek, Bulgaria

Balchek, Bulgaria June 30 - July 6, 2009 Underway from Varna Yacht Club at 0755. Disappointed that our new found friends, Ivan and Liliana, never showed up last night. But today is another day, and we are off to a new town, Balchek. Motored the 18 miles, very little wind. Got moored alongside the dock, with Arthemis just behind us. It’s a very, very nice marina, helpful young man who spoke English helped us with our lines, etc. He was also helpful answering questions about the town. On the first day, we find the laundry close by at the...

Jun 24, 2009 - Varna, Bulgaria

June 24 - 30, 2009 Underway at 0520, bound for Varna. Sun shines, but little wind so we motor. Varna is a commercial port, including a cruise ship landing, a small yacht club and a new pontoon for visiting yachts - charge was 39 euros a night. We got secured at 1220 on the new pontoon, with Artemis next to us. A quiet night aboard. The next day we moved back around the corner to the yacht club (for 10 eros), really a much nicer place. It is a small harbor, and Gemini got tangled in the mooring lines as we were coming in. A man from the...

Jun 22, 2009 - Nessabar, Bulgaria

Nessabar, Bulgaria June 22, 2009 We left the berth and proceeded to fuel dock, where we topped off the tank. Underway by 1010. The winds were just wonderful: beam reach on the starboard tack, making 5-6 knots totally under sail. We were able to sail almost the entire 10 miles to our next destination. A gorgeous, clear blue sky - it doesn't get any better than this!!! Looked for a marina in "Old Town Nessabar", but found signs saying "No mooring" instead. We motored another 4 miles to the New Town Marina, Dinevi Marina. Moored next to the...
