Jun 2, 2016 - Marmaris to Fethiye, Turkey

Tuesday 31st May 2016 Marmaris then sailing Woke up this morning and had breakfast at 8:00am, then a briefing about safety and the itinerary. At about 9:30am, we set off out of the harbour and travelled towards the spot where we anchored in a beautiful quiet bay called Ekincik Bay which had amazingly clear water. Apart from swimming, relaxing on the day bed, reading and generally doing nothing were the order of the day. There is nothing to do and so that's what we did. David did swim a little but once Lynn had tested the temperature with...

Oct 30, 2011 - the town no one wanted

Life aboard a gulet is mighty easy to get used to. We sail about half the day past picturesque coves and islands dotted with sail boats and other gulets. We lounge on the deck waiting for the next meal, chatting, reading and listening to our Ipods. And the other half of the day we get into the dinghy and go to shore and do something interesting. Today we went to a ghost town called Kayakoy about half an hour drive from Fetiye, the largest town on the Turquoise Coast. Although the Greeks and Turks had lived together in harmony more or less,...

Apr 20, 2011 - Mediterranean island cruise

A lazy day today, nothing planned and everyone is free to do their own thing. A big group has opted for the island cruise, and we don’t have to be ready until nearly 10am. Mainly our group on the boat, with just two other passengers as we leave. We pick up a family of four at another resort, then head out to sea. The wind picks up and it is cool, but not unpleasant. We moor in a deep bay where the water is clear and very deep. Many of us are soon in the water, it is a lovely spot. We are told we will be there an hour, and for some reason we...

Apr 19, 2011 - Saklikent Gorge & Fethiye

There appears to be a couple of sore heads this morning. Tony wonders who the bugger is that sent the text that read “5am is it?” – yes it bloody was! Soon after that the frigging mosque calls to prayer. It was a restless night again as the aircon in these places never seem to work on the cool setting, and we wonder if the hotel has turned that off somehow? We leave for Fethiye at 7.30, our route following the stunning Mediterranean coast. The road is quite winding, and hilly. We notice that the road is three lanes, the up hill section is...

Oct 12, 2009 - Thanksgiving in Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. We hope you all had a great holiday and had your fill of turkey. We're celebrating with a different kind of Turkey and are very grateful to have this opportunity. We (especially Lynda) were a bit apprehensive about cycling in Turkey. We had been told the roads were terrible, full of potholes and crumbling edges, the traffic was really heavy and fast, and the drivers were crazy and would try to run cyclists off the road. We are happy to report that we have found the roads to be in excellent condition (though the...
