Apr 13, 2007 - Samui and Bangkok,Thailand

We left early for our flight to the island of Samui. . We arrived to the mountainous island with many coconut palms. The water was Caribbean blue and there were quite a few other islands in the distance. It reminded me of the Caribbean or maybe Hawaii. After we arrived at the Peace hotel we walked past the pool to the beach and there was a stiff breeze. There was a mix-up with our bungalow. Our first one had an open bathroom plus bugs, but the one we moved to was very new and nice. They had a pavilion for spa services. We walked down to the...

Mar 10, 2007 - Khao Sok National Park

We got off the overnight train at about 6am at Sturat Thani and into our transport from the station to the Morning Mist lodge at Khao Sok National Park. Everyone then went off to sleep/shower etc for a couple of hours before going tubing. Tubing was great! We got back on the converted pickup style transport and about 20 mins later we arrived at the start point on the river. The river was not fast flowing so it was a swim and float your lorry inner-tube down the river. I managed to stand on mine as well, there is a picture but I have not...

Mark's Trip 2007

Feb 18, 2007 - Bangkok to Surit Thani

The train ride from Bangkok went well. I had a lower berth in a 2nd class car. I sat across from a thai guy who lives in Bangkok and works as a lawyer in Surit Thani. He spoke great english and likes to golf so we had a good conversation. About 1-hour into the ride they started making the beds, basically the two seats folded into a lower bed and then a curtain was hung to completely enclose it. The guy who sat across from me had the top bunk which folded down from the roof. Only $50 for the train & bus. Had a little trouble getting to sleep...

Jan 19, 2007 - Surat Thani

Quick flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani for a quick stopover before Koh Tao...Sudden monsoon past over and we found ourselves at a night market in torrential rain, getting street soup to go that we ate out of plastic bags in front of "Gladiator"...only in Thailand do you eat soup out of a bag... Tastes damn good though when you're hungry!!

Nov 12, 2006 - Surat Thani

Dutchie on the move

Sep 3, 2006 - One long train, 36 hours in clothes, and a random American

This morning we awoke to the sound of people getting off the carriage. It was probably about 8am or so when we got up, we still had to sit in our bunks though - the only bad thing about having a sleep is that you have no where to sit when you are awake. We only had about RM3 which could not even buy you a drink and all the rest of our money was in Thai Baht. Doesn't help when you're on a Malay train. So we roughed it and drank only the water in our backpacks and a packet of OREOs we bought on the way to the station. At 10am we grabbed all...

Aug 25, 2006 - Surat Thani - switching Thai coasts

August 25, 2006 The monsoon season weather has not made a dent in our beach itinerary. The statistically "wetter" side of Southern Thailand has been clear and warm - in both Phi Phi and Railay Beach. The only clouds and rain we have had has been on our travel days. So, of course, because it is time to go, we woke to a cloudy sky. We spent a nice morning on the beach and then packed up to make our short journey north and west. After a short boat trip off Railay Beach to Krabi (in between torrential downpours), we caught a bus to Surat Thani,...

ADVENTURE!!!

May 18, 2006 - Traveling South

We got up at 5:30 AM to pack and post last night's website work. By 6:15 we were in the taxi and on our way to the airport. Paul noticed that the meter wasn't running and so asked the driver how much it would cost. 500 bhat ($15 Cdn) was the answer. After a bit of back and forth, 400 bhat + tolls was agreed on. This is still too high by at least 100 baht. Note to self: Should have told driver to turn meter on before pulling away. We arrived at 7:00 am and so had time for breakfast at the airport. Flight south was on Asia Air, a Westjet...

Apr 12, 2006 - To Surat Thani

12 April 06 - To Surat Thani I was surprised that I did sleep on and off on the train in my upper bunk, despite the fact that the air conditioner was blowing across me and that the lights were never dimmed. We were supposed to arrive at Phun Phin at 0640 but arrived two hours later. From there we got onto a bus which took us the 14km to the pier at Surat Thani. The boat we should have got at 0800 had already left as by this time it was 0930. The next boat was at 1400. The time flew by as Emily, Axl and I chatted about everything and it was...

Feb 2, 2006 - On the road (and sea) again

Had breakfast at Coral with the boys before we all jumped in the taxi to go over to Thong Sala where the ferry goes from. They had had a really heavy night on the piss and Toby and Dave were still really drunk, and rather annoying! The ferry ride was fine, apart from Toby and Dave wouldn't leave me alone and kept singing to me and stuff (they had carried on drinking). I finally had enough, but then the ferry got to the port. Then we had to get a bus to where our coach was going from. I escaped the anoying boys at this point! We ended up at...

Got boat at 9am from Phi Phi to Krabi (1.5 hours) then went in search of internet. Had some lunch and a few drinks then got minivan to coach stop - waited there half hour or so then got coach to Surat Thani - 3 hours or so. Then got ANOTHER mini van to the train station and waited there for train. Was two hours late - finally arrived at 10.30pm. Made ourselves comfy in our bunk beds, had a few games of cards then tried to sleep for rest of journey.

Dec 19, 2005 - Krabi - Surat Thani - Bangkok (again)

So...my decision was to stay on Koh Lanta and take a day trip to Phi Phi Island for some snorkeling and a visit to the monkey beach and "The Beach" (from the movie)...but, the weather was again not great when I woke up, so I canceled my day trip and booked transportation back up north to Bangkok on my way to Chiang Mai. Sasha and I spent the morning on Sunday just relaxing by the beach (under cover, of course) until the minibus came to pick us up. Fai (the guy who ran the bungalows) told me the story of how he ended up on Koh Lanta. He had...
