Mar 1, 2008 - Diving in South Thailand

As most of you know, I spent the better part of a year in Ao Nang, a small beach town on the west coast of south Thailand. I got certified as a divemaster in the off-season (June, July) and worked here during the high-season, logging around 300 dives. I made it back and did five dives here, getting back in the water for the first time since 2002 when I did the ice-diving course in Lake Minnewanka in May. Here are a few photos showing what life was like here. Underwater photos are courtesy of Phil, my dive buddy on the first day at a great...

Feb 27, 2008 - Phi Phi Island

It's been a few days since we posted an entry, but we've been extremely busy (as the photos will attest). During the evenings at the hotels we observed some entertaining Thai cover bands and their unique interpretations of American pop favorites. We had no idea the Eagles and Glen Campbell are so popular in Thailand. We wrapped things up in Kata Beach with a Thai cooking class that was both interesting and tasty. We learned a lot about Thai herbs and chilies and got to eat what we cooked. On Monday, we left Kata early and headed for the...

Feb 11, 2008 - Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Well, we finally made it to Southern Thailand! After 3 long days of traveling and sleeping on buses, we arrived at Koh Phi Phi Don. This is probably one of Thailand's most popular, and most beautiful, islands. The island was actually hit quite hard by the tsunami of 2004. Pretty much every building on the island was destroyed. Even though it has been 3 years, you can still see that the town hasn't been able to rebuild as quickly as they would like. They center of town, which was the hardest hit, is still pretty bare, all of the trees and...

Feb 4, 2008 - Ko Phi Phi

We visited Ko Phi Phi Don whilst holidaying in Thailand a couple of years ago and it was so beautiful that we decided to return for a brief visit. It was also an ideal place to practice our new scuba diving skills as the area offers some of Thailand’s best diving. The only drawback is that accommodation costs several times what it would in the rest of Thailand because the island is small but very popular. On our last visit we stayed on a stunning secluded beach in the north of Phi Phi but this time around budget constraints left us on a...

Jan 27, 2008 - Ko Phi Phi

Description Ko Phi Phi is an island on Thailand's western coast that was devestated by the Tsunami. There were still very visible remnants of the destruction and re-building attempt, but overall it was pretty well developed. Think Aculpoco on a beautiful island - and the island itself really was stunningly beautiful. The night scene was a bit intense however. Overall it was a very beautiful place that I have no desire to go back to. Highlights Rented a kayak and paddled around to "Monkey Beach", which consisted of lots of tourists hand...

Jan 21, 2008 - Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi is a group of islands on the west coast of Thailand. It was all but wiped out from the tsunami, and they're still rebuilding. Some say it has given the island a chance to plan and rebuild in an organized manner, but it's still chaos and you can feel the effects of the devastation. Many families are only half as big as they used to be, or gone completly. There is a memorial park dedicated to the people who lost their lives in the tsunami and it's beautifully sad. Life must go on though, and the locals are still a happy positive...

Nov 13, 2007 - Beach madness

So today was amazing. Totally. We chartered a powerboat and drove around the Adman sea hopping from island to island. We started off at Bamboo island, then to some other Island, then some other island, then Phi Phi island, and then some other island. In addition, we stopped numerous times in the middle of the sea so we could snorkle. I passed on snorkling so I could sunbathe on the boat. I did get out once and swim around for a bit but quite frankly was happier laying out and drinking a beer on the boat. Plus I have this thing about...

Oct 10, 2007 - Phi Phi Islands

10th Well after our journey from Krabi to Phi Phi, we arrived to the hustle and bustle of everyone wanting you to stay with them in their guesthouse, quite annoying when we have our big bags on andreally are not in the mood for it. We ended up in a tourist information office and they booked us a room for a night in 'Uphill Cottages' for 600 baht a night actually seems like we were a bit ripped off for it as the room was pretty grotty and really dark all painted in a brick red. So we only stayed there for one night and looked for another...

Sep 5, 2007 - Karon Beach, Kata Beach and Kho Phi-Phi

After 3 days of R&R in Patong I packed up on the Monday and moved over to the Old Phuket hotel in Karon - a beach about 7km from Patong, where I met Neil and Victoria - they arrived at about 7pm on Monday night from Sydney. After a quick dinner at a local Thai place in Karon and some frustration trying to figure out how to put some wooden puzzles together - it was off to bed for the two travellers from Sydney - Neil had not slept the night before - had drinks with the guys at work until he had to go home - to get the shuttle to the airport....

Sep 4, 2007 - Phi Phi

Since I didn't sleep at all in Phuket we were up in time for our bus to the ferry to get to Koh Phi Phi. But the bus couldn't find our hotel so we almost missed the ferry!! Phi Phi has 2 island, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lay. Phi Phi Lay in uninhabitable but that's where the movie The Beach was filmed and there's lots of snorkelling places there too. Phi Phi Don is where everyone stays and is where the tsunami hit really bad. Our ferry did a tour around Phi Phi Lay but didn't stop. Then we had to transfer our stuff to a fishing boat which...

Aug 16, 2007 - Koh Phi Phi - aka "The Beach"

well we didnt learn about the weather...headed to Koh Phi Phi island off Phuket- needless to say it pissed it down most of the 2 days we were there - & the rain out here beats manc land by a long shot! The main island was badly hit by the 2006 tsunami so there was still building work going on in some places, we got a cool rustic bungalow up in the trees, nice apart from our neighbours- a massive swarm of frogs/toads felt the need to croak all night- 1st night they were so loud i thought it was a herd of cows in distress! We did a day trip...
