Apr 21, 2012 - "Sawatdee Kaa" Koh Samui

Hello from the "Land of Smiles" We have been in Koh Samui for the past two days. It really feels like coming home. Koh Samui was discovered several hundred years ago as a haven for fishermen and sea traders sailing through the Gulf of Thailand to shelter from storms. Early Chinese and Malay settlers marvelled at the island’s beauty and abundance and there are those that believe the name is derived from word Saboey, which means ‘safe haven’ in the Chinese tongue. The island measures some 25 km at its widest point. It is surrounded by...

Mar 7, 2012 - Big Buddha day

Yesterday I had the day ff work for the national holiday- big Buddha day. My supervisor took me and the OT student to see two temples. We then ate at this very odd garden/ health place. There wer toilets evywhere. The seats were toilets, bathrooms evwhere, trash cans made of toilets... I didn't understand the point. My supervisor said it was for good health.... We then went to the beach. Although I must say it was not a nice Thai beach.... It was more on the level of jersey shore. That night I went to temple with my host family. It was...

Mar 4, 2012 - Amazing experience on the NICU

Did I find a new calling...l well probably not, but I must say that my experiences on the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) have been incredible. Surat Thai hospital has what I would consider to be quite a large NICU and it is a bit if a sad place, with only about 50% of those fragile little babies making it... But I have discovered it can also be quite happy. On my first day observing there, last Thursday the OT I was with worked in feeding/ swallow training with 2 premies, one with hydrocephalus. After the OT treatment the baby was able...

Jan 31, 2012 - more pool, more beach

Today will be our last full day on Koh Samui. We haven't done much but the time has raced by. After all our travels through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand we were ready for a bit of R n R. And that is what we got here. We stayed close to our lodgings, a few walkabouts, but not much to write home about. We had found the local market a few days ago. We wanted to go again this morning seeing that on the day we found it, it was late afternoon and closing time. After an in room breakfast at our hotel we set out to the market. It was after...

Jan 30, 2012 - a washout

The rain from the previous evening and night continued into the morning. It kept us close to our hotel. It kept us indoors for much of the morning. We were able to get out for lunch, the rain having stopped. We set out for a walk after lunch as the rain held off. When we got back to our hotel I sat around the pool and read and got wet. Got wet by jumping in the water. When I got wet from raindrops falling on my head I left the pool and went to our room. The rain lifted again and allowed us out for supper. We cruised the strip looking for...

Jan 29, 2012 - a bit of pool, a bit of beach

Today was a mix of the previous two days. We got a late start to the day, slept in. Bad for maximising sun time but good for the skin. We rolled out of bed after eight in the morning. Got our eyes opened and the creaking joints oiled then we walked down the street for breakfast. We stayed close to our hotel in the morning. We hung out at our pool, doing some more snoozing or reading. Occassionally one of us would get wet. By mid afternoon, the intensity of the sun had got to a tolerable level for us, so we headed to the beach. We found a...

Jan 28, 2012 - At The Pool

The main reason why we left our previous hotel was the lack of a pool/chill place. Our present place of stay has a nice small pool surrounded by trees and shrubs. It was here that we would spend the day. The beach was taking a toll on our skin, too much pink. A day in the shade was called for. Marion stayed in the shade. I went for a walkabout in the morning. After breakfast I headed out to the highway and walked to The Big Buddha. This wasn't a pilgramage. There aren't many highlites to this island beyond the beaches and dive sites. If one...

Jan 27, 2012 - Another Day on the New Beach

We refrained from going out to the beach too early today. Our unrestrained ways of the last few days have left us pink. Pink is good on a new baby. There were some unnoccupied lounge chairs at the hotel swimming pool. They were rolled into the shade and we lounged on the lounge chairs while lounge music was pumped out over speakers hidden in the trees. It was quite relaxing. The call of the sea was finally heard over the lounge music. Just after noon we headed for the beach. We found the spot we had occupied the previous day and laid claim...

Jan 26, 2012 - A Day on a New Beach

We left our Chaweng Beach area abode today. Moved around the corner to the north side of the island. It's not that our place of stay was bad. It was quite comfortable. Easy access to the beach. Had a decent restaurant close by. We had booked for three days and if it grew on us then we would stay longer. It didn't grow on us. It didn't have a chill place on the premises. The noise from the main street was starting to bear on us. Muay Thai Boxing is a major highlite of anyone's trip to the island. And it can be three times a week. At least...

Jan 25, 2012 - Another Day on the Beach

This day was a repeat of yesterday. Get up, go for a walk, go to the beach, get hot, get wet, get hot and on and on. If we keep this up we might not be able to go home. We found the same spot on the beach where we roasted ourselves yesterday. Making sure that the leaf pattern on our skin was different from yesterday we settled in for the day. Five hours later we went home for refreshments. There was some evidence of burning. There was one difference with our beach day today. We bought ice cream. The vendor we had befriended on our first...

Jan 24, 2012 - On The Beach

The morning in Koh Samui turned out to be hotter than the rest of the day. We had left our hotel in the early morning to get a walk in before the temperature of the day made such an outing ill advised. We got whalloped by the heat and humidity of the morning. The air movement on the south coast of Samui was still getting its wings together. When we walked on Chaweng Beach it was to calm air and gentle slurping of waves on the sand. We were sweating within minutes and by the end of the hour were seeking shade and air conditioning and cool...

Jan 23, 2012 - to the beaches

It was 10:30 AM and we were having one of the few negative experiences we would have in Chiang Mai. Our cab driver had failed to show up. We needed to be at the airport by 11 AM. Today we were flying south down to Koh Samui to spend the rest of our adventure in the sun. The previous evening when we returned from the Sunday Walking Street, the hotel bell hop approached us and asked if we needed someone to drive us around Chiang Mai. Monday was his day off and he wanted to make good use of it. We told him we were going to the airport. He took...
