Feb 10, 2008 - Beach, bikinis, and pina coladas

Ko Samui photos We had breakfast at our hotel by the beach (Chaweng Beach), and then walked along the shoreline for a long way. There were a ton of beachside massage stands, and manicures and pedicures. We also spotted the stinky drunk guy from the plane yesterday but walked past him undetected, thankfully. We stopped for drinks at a beachside patio and ordered pina coladas all round. I think they may be our new favourite drinks. Robert thinks he is metro for drinking them, but back home in Calgary he couldn't get away with it. I don't...

Feb 9, 2008 - From hell to heaven

Pattaya photos and Koh Samui photos This morning we skipped the hotel buffet breakfast and went up the block to a nice Western-looking restaurant. The food was good and so was the service. We did some more walking around down the busy streets and went back to the mall from yesterday for one hour facials. Once again cutting it close, we raced back to our hotel on a sawngthaew (like a hop on, hop off pickup truck with benches in the back) and grabbed our bags. As we were leaving the room for the last time, Robert somehow broke the key. It is...

Feb 6, 2008 - Ko Samui, Thailand AND LINK TO PICS FROM EUROPE

We left Ko Lanta early morning and had a big day of travel in front of us. We took a cab to the ferry, a ferry to a "VIP" bus (not very important at all) and then the bus to another ferry. A total of 11 hours of getting around. We arrived at our resort in the evening and it was a great setup. Similar to Ko Lanta, we had a great bungalow room. The place had their own restaurant, were on the beach and a pool. The beach was pretty nice there but also had alot of coral in the shallow waters and thus swimming wasnt ideal. There was also alot of...

Jan 28, 2008 - Days 3-5

We arrived in Ko Samui at around 2pm and found a bungalow about 100 yards from the beach (which is beautiful by the way). We're staying in a place called Chaweng which is a lot different from Bangkok as it's more of a holiday resort, a lot more chilled out and there's much more sun/less smog!! There's also a lot of night life (I'm sure the girls would love it here), though we're quickly beginning to realise that our budget will not support sampling the local beer every night! Today (Monday) we had a tour of the island visiting the...

Oct 30, 2007 - Ko Samui

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, there was minimal internet access on Samui. It rained most of the time we were on the island, but we still made the most of it and got sunburnt. We took the overnight train for Bangkok which was really fun, then a bus (which broke down,) and then a ferry boat through torrential rain. When we arrived we got to our resort, checked-in, and then headed into town. The rest of the day was beach and pool time, thai massages, and some night shopping in town. Wednesday we had a day trip to surrounding islands for...

Oct 7, 2007 - Ko Samui, Thailand

Well after taking a full day to get to Ko Samui from Chaing Mai, we have decided to extend our time here. We left Chaing Mai on a 1 hour flight to Bangkok, had a 3 hour layover, took another hour flight to (don't remember)??? then a 1 1/2 hour bus ride, a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride across to the island, followed by a 45 minute cab ride to the other side of the island. Sufice to say that we were ready for a dinner and a drink. We found some bungalos on the beach and met up for dinner. My first impression of this place was miles from what I...

Bret's 2007 travels

Aug 7, 2007 - Two days is enough in Ko Samui (Laura & Matt)

Laura: Everyone I know who has been to Thailand has visited Ko Samui. Obviously those people came with more cash than I did or they came for a shorter time. There is tons to do here: fishing charters, zip-trekking, sunset cruises, day-long kayak trips and fancy resorts with pools and expensive menus. But, we are nearing the end of our trip and also the end of our trip fund. We find an a/c room in a nice guest house and enjoy the idea of having no bed bugs (our bites are really starting to surface now and they are really itchy. I have much...

Aug 2, 2007 - Ko Samui

I've been so busy on my trip that I haven't had time to visit an Internet cafe until today. Our group went to Ko Samui on Thursday, but I had SCUBA on my mind, so I made plans with Carol, one of my travelling companions, to leave early the next morning for Koh Tao, which is known for SCUBA diving.
