Dec 7, 2004 - Thailand and South Islands

7-12-04 We checked out of our cheapie digs and into the still affordable Rambuttri Village Inn with a/c, private wc and a rooftop swimming pool for the bargain price of 500B. We decided to spend time in Bangkok shopping and picked out a couple of markets to explore. Our Tuk tuk driver lead us a merry dance around jem stores and tailors (the oldest trick in the book as they get commissions from the stores to bring potential customers there. If you find your self in this scenario get out and flag another tuk tuk. The one highlight was a brief...

Dec 3, 2004 - Koh Tao (RAAA, Paul goes diving)

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Well yesterday was our first 2 sea dives (One straight after the other) and MAAAAN it was wickid. Water was really stirred up cos of the monsoon season and I thought it might be a bit naff but noooooo! Now I"m used to seeing fish in my tank at home and think their wickid but this was a completely different 'Kettle of fish!' he he! We all lobbed ourselves in off the boat and gradually made our way down the bouy line to the bottom (I'll skip the part where you feel like you're heads gonna implode from the...

Nov 12, 2004 - Last day in Ko Tao

My last day in Ko Tao. After completing four quizzes, a final exam, and four open water dives in two days, I finally got my Open Water Diving certificate today! It's quite an accomplishment for me knowing that I hate water and the thought of drowning. Learning to dive is like learning to drive. You take a course, take a written exam, and do the actual practice with an instructor. It comes natural to some people, and to some, it's more stressful than anything else, until you actually become comfortable enough that it becomes second nature. I...

Nov 10, 2004 - First day of Diving Class

I turned 28 today -- yes, it's my birthday! And what better way to spend a birthday than studying and doing homework? I spent this morning in class going over the very basics of diving. I don't mind studying since it's just really fun and exciting. This afternoon, Jessie, my fellow student, and I will be starting our first confined dive in the swimming pool. She is another lone traveler from Oregon, having a similar itinerary to mine. She will be my dive buddy for the rest of the course. Well, since it's my b-day, I am going to be lazy...

Nov 10, 2004 - My birthday in Ko Tao

It turned out that the confined dive didn't really mean confined. The instructor, Chris, from Austria (with the governator accent), decided we'd just go into the real water — the ocean - for our first dive. So, we went over all the basic stuff, such as taking off the mask and putting it back on, taking off the regulator and back on, etc., all in the ocean. I was a bit scared, but soon I got a bit more comfortable breathing in the water. Soon after you swim away from the beach, you start seeing corals underneath and an amazing number of...

Nov 9, 2004 - Ko Tao, the turtle island

Welcome to Ko Tao, the Turtle Island! It's called Ko Tao (Tao means turtle) because of its shape as you can see in my photo. After riding an overnight bus, us passengers en route to Ko Tao were dropped off at the travel agent office at 3 in the morning. There was a simple mat and a bunch of pillows in the office. We figured it meant we would be sleeping there for a few hours before the boat that leaves at the crack of dawn. The 3-hour boat ride was quite uneventful. As soon as I got to the island, I was picked up by the resort/dive shop at...

Nov 1, 2004 - Koh Tao

Oct 26, 2004 - Thailand is amazing!!! I am in Koh Tao at the moment

I am in the neighboring island called Koh Tao at the moment which is about an hour and half boat ride from Koh Samui. Beautiful remote island! I am probably going for a dive tomorrow because it is said to be amoung the best dive spots in the world. I will be heading to Koh Phangan on thusday for the weekend on my way back to Koh Samui. On Thursday night in Koh Phangan is the famously huge Full Moon Beach Party! I have heard that these full moon partys are a must see in Thailand. Sounds like Friday will be a day of sleep on the beach. Koh...

FINDING MY WAY

Oct 13, 2004 - Islands and diving

That evening Vivienne and I got on the train at 7.30pm to head down the coast. It was suprisingly luxurious, with little bunks and air-con, and after having some dinner on board and a couple of beers we settled down to sleep, rock by the regular motion of the train. We woke up at 4am all ready to disembark at Chumphon. We were about an hour late getting in, but as the ferry wasn't leaving till 7am we didn't feel this was a problem. A truck took us to the ferry and we dozed quietly, while watching a film for the 3 hour journey. When we...

Jul 28, 2004 - Turtle Island

We've headed north to another Island, Koh Tao which translates as Turtle Island, apparently it's shaped like a turtle! I think we may have been ripped off on the boat over here. Everyone we asked told us there were two boats, a fast and a slow boat, we opted for the fast boat which was more expensive. When we got on the boat we recognised a couple of guys we had met before and asked them how much they paid, they paid for the slow boat! I think they just tell people there are two boats but actually there is only one, we just chose to pay...

Our Big Adventure

Jul 20, 2004 - Koh Tao, Thailand

Ok, time to bring our budget back down to ground. Koh Samui for all the great food we ate, was a pretty expensive spot to stay in for 10 days. Still, Kim, Shelia, Chris & I all had fun & certainly ate well, but enough was eventually enough & it was time to catch the boat over to the smaller island of Koh Tao. Let me start off with a little background on the place... Koh = island and Tao = turtle in Thai. A diving "Mecca" in Thailand Province: Suratthani Size: About 21 km2 Population: About 800 people Tao is a former political prison...
