In Mombasa I met Dave, a Kenyan expat of 40 years. When I mentioned we were heading to Moshi by matatu, he was startled. He described the first hour out of Mombasa as 'the worst road I've ever driven on. It's a national disgrace. I'm embarrassed every time I take it'. I thought he might have been overstating it a bit. He wasn't. The main artery between Kenya's biggest port, its capital and the rest of East Africa was a potholed, dusty, disgrace. For the first couple of hours, anyway. Nov 29, 2004 - week 1

Week 1(stay tuned for photo entries,maybe in a day or so) Hujambo! I'm here in Africa, alive and well, seeing so many things I can hardly keep the stories filed away in my mind. The trip over was all treacherous except for the plane rides which were enjoyable and comfy.....thank you British Airlines!! I arrived last Sunday at 4pm to the Cross-Cultural Solutions housing complex. When I got to Nairobi at 11pm, the shuttle that was to be booked for me did not show up. I paid a woman, a local tour operator dressed in fine taste and speaking...
