May 21, 2015 - Day 12 - Winterthur

Day 12 - Thursday 21st May - Winterthur Well, it is still wet, cloudy and very heavy weather hanging over Mt Rigi to the south - BUT - it looks a little lighter in the north towards Zurich. So, we think we’ll head off to Winterthur (pronounce as ’Vintertoor‘) So we took the train to the north to Zurich then change trains to get one heading to Winterthur via the Airport. Arr about 11-ish and went to the tourist centre at the Bahnhof HB (main train station) to find out their suggestions for a few hours. Winterthur has a large central area...

Jan 27, 2012 - Bye-bye South Korea / Welcome Switzerland / Auf Wiedersehen Südkorea und willkommen Schweiz

We slept in on our last day and enjoyed our beautiful hotel room. Then we close our suitcase for the last time. Mine is heavier, 33.5 kg.... Thanks god we're flying business. The shuttle bus takes us to the airport. We check in. The service is friendly and wonderful. They say hello, bow and do everything what is needed. Then, we spend the last minutes in South Korea in the Asiana lounge - enjoying it to its fullest. Time for boarding. Out of a habit, we walk down the gangway to economy class. Half-way down, we realise, laugh and turn...

Dec 23, 2011 - Get started

Slowly but surely getting started, at least my suitcase stands in my bedroom waiting to be packed ... but before, X-mas dinner with my family ....

Aug 10, 2009 - Last day Christmas Dinner in Winterthur

Our last day in Switzerland was relaxed and involved packing, last minute shopping, final unicycle practice, and a Christmas dinner for the Muff family. The Muff's apparently wanted to experience a Canadian Christmas dinner involving a turkey and all the fixings. Nicole found turkey dinners (all 5 dinners) to be one of her Canadian treats. Tanya created a Christmas masterpiece in August with a, no doubt, expensive turkey imported from Brazil, yams mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and salad. Cameras were flashing as the turkey was pulled...

Aug 7, 2009 - St. Gallen & Appenzellerland

Ventured off to St. Gallen (about 60 km east of Winterthur) where Nicole will be going to university. Visited another amazing church/old monastery complex. Walked around old town with many cantilevered windows and coloured buildings. Drove off into a mountain pass to have lunch at Wald Egg restaurant/farm. Great traditional lunch with beer and pop and animals to visit afterwards. The girls were in heaven. Apparently now we need a donkey... does it ever end? Wald Egg had a small museum with examples of old store, school, etc. We then headed...

Aug 6, 2009 - Hanging Around the Village

We relaxed for the morning and then headed over to grandparents house in the next village for a visit, cake and ice cream. We biked and Nicole and Corinne rollerbladed the 15 km each way. Burn 500 calories and then put it back on with cake and ice cream... Then Felix and Judith took us to a 16th century classical concert in the courtyard of Winterthur's medieval castle for the evening. It was 8 musicians including a wooden recorder, spanish guitar, harp, percussion, alto sax, cello, soprano and tenor singers. The played for two hours and...

Aug 4, 2009 - Zurich - Tunnels and Elephants

We headed off with Felix for a quick tour of his new tunnel systems, must be a boy thing, but the girls were patient and understanding. A new 5 km tunnel is opening in November. So we got a tour of the main admin centre for Zurich highways. A large wall map with TV's to monitor 642 cameras. I learned you have to be careful what you do in cars as pretty much all highways around Zurich and under video surveillance... Felix also took us into the new tunnel and walked us around the back-tunnels. Not something you see everyday and probably never...

Aug 1, 2009 - National Swiss Day, Zurich

We headed out first thing in the mornig to Zurich to participate in National Swiss Day. They had closed off the main street and had a large parade down the center of old Zurich. Lots to see and experience: alpenhorns, traditional dress, very large cow bells that created a defening, rhythmical beeting, and sugar cubes soaked in Kirsch were handed out (nice touch to the parade). The parade ended up in the town square near the lake for rifle salute and speeches. Swiss-German political speeches in the hot sun... luckily I had partaken in a few...

Jul 29, 2009 - Zurich, Switerland

Felix presented a great plan for the day. He said I write in my journal 'holiday.' We woke up to the sun shining and a road trip to Zurich. We managed to almost make Felix's office on time, maybe the Swiss punctuality will rub off on us. Felix had a fun packed day planned for us. We walked around the old town near his office. Looking at the beautiful Swiss architecture, the house Lenin stayed in and unusual window boxes. These flowers ranged from sunflowers to a healthy crop of cannibas. Of course when Felix pointed out the various crops I...

Jul 26, 2009 - Toggenburg, Switzerland

We woke up to another glorious sunny day in Switzerland. Judith and Felix planned a trip into Toggenburg to go hiking and enjoy a little mountain festival. Today was our last day of our car so we followed Felix down the windy highways of Switzerland. Of course everything was green and beautiful. The whole countryside is like a manicured garden. It is haying season here so people were busy cutting the hay, raking by hand or blowing it down the hill. Farms here are all on the hillside so everything is extremely steep! It is a wonder the...

Jul 25, 2009 - Salzburg & to Winterthur, Switzerland

After spending the night at the SNOOZE hotel which was surprisingly reputable (once again the only english TV was a little trashy, three year old Much Music). We headed to downtown Salzburg for what Dave called, 'a little rehabilitation from all that Italian shopping.' We parked the car in a maze of underground tunnels and parking that are under the hill that surrounds the old town. Dave was immediately imagining these as bomb shelters which they could have been with their 6 inch steel doors at either end. Salzburg was a little cooler and...

Jul 15, 2009 - Winterthur, Switzerland - Rhine Falls

We left in the rain for the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (30 km north of Winterthur on the German border). Filled up the car with gas (first time this trip @ about $1.67 CDN/litre). It cost about $60 CDN to drive from Paris to Winterthur (approx. 600 km). So far driving seems to be economical for 4 people, and you get to stop and smell the sunflower fields occasionally... We'll see how driving with the Italians is though? We made Rhine Falls (which obviously is on the Rhine River that runs out of Lake Constance or Bodensee Lake). The...
