Jul 8, 2014 - Packing up

July 8 A pattern had been established…the rain continued and the temperature was hanging around 12 to 16C …but dammit, it’s July and I’m wearing shorts for the summer! Susann and James were both working and Dylan was in daycare and it was time for us to pack for our Wednesday departure and to catch up on the blog writing. Brenda had offered to make her delicious pasta pomodoro for dinner and, while she did laundry and food prep, I walked into Lyss with my umbrella to buy the missing ingredients. I kind of cheated a bit and grabbed a...

Jul 7, 2014 - Dinner at Rosmarie's

July 7 We got up late on Monday as James had gone to work and Susann had an early medical appointment with Dylan. By the time she returned we were up and ready for a walk into town. My last cortisone shot was wearing off but if I took it easy and used my trekking poles I was making it around pretty well. Our destination was a specialty food shop for packaged Swiss cookies and snacks that make good gifts for back home so Brenda was able to fill out her gift list. At the food shop, Dylan began displaying that he was having a tough day so when...

Jul 6, 2014 - Schwarzsee

July 6 We were enjoying a slow Sunday morning with no plan for the day when James suggested we drive to Schwarzsee, a scenic spot near Fribourg. Thus began just another stunning 80 km drive through the never-boring Swiss countryside with the four adults making up silly songs to entertain Dylan…he was particularly taken with our adaptation of B-i-n-g-o into D-y-l-a-n. Schwarzsee (German), Lac Noir (French) or Black Lake (it’s not really black) is in the Pre-Alps, about 30 kms from the Alps themselves. We arrived to a fairly busy Sunday but...

Jul 5, 2014 - Shopping Day

July 5 Saturday was a quiet day after all the hubbub of the birthday celebrations. Brenda and Susann went by train to Bern for a day of shopping while James and Dylan went for a walk. While they were gone, I tried valiantly to catch up on my writing and managed to get a couple of days posted. The relaxing day continued as James, Dylan and I walked into Lyss to pick up some buns and condiments for a dinner of gruyere cheeseburgers. The girls reported back on their successful shopping foray into Bern with souvenirs, clothing and some choice...

Jul 4, 2014 - Susann's birthday

July 4 Happy Birthday to Susann and the good ole USA! In the morning, James gave us a full report on his great day at the Golf Club of Lausanne where they had come in second, much to his surprise and delight. Their night had been capped off with a fabulous gourmet dinner in the club’s 3-Michelin starred restaurant. His group of ten were assigned the prestigious kitchen table where they were able to observe all the back-of-house workings of the staff of 52. Envious?...hell, yes! We spent most of the day getting ready for Susann’s birthday...

Jul 3, 2014 - Murten

July 3 A milestone of sorts...Over 400 pictures and 22,000 words posted to this journal as of this entry. We got up late to what was supposed to be a sunny day but it was totally overcast and cool…thankfully no rain. James had left very early for a full day of golf in Lausanne and Susann was off to work after dropping Dylan off at daycare. Brenda and I planned on going to the nearby walled medieval village of Murten, a best-kept local secret, 30 kms away. Arriving at Murten, we found it definitely is not well-known except for a few “in the...

Jul 2, 2014 - A rainy day in Switzerland

July 2 Heavy rain during the night greeted us when we got up on Wednesday. James had the morning off and took us into Biel to see if we could get my Wenger watch fixed and to pick up our tickets for next week’s train to Brussels. We had no luck on the watch as we wandered in the heavy rain but were advised that Bern would be a better bet. We bid James goodbye as he drove off to his dental hygienist job in Bern and we went to the Biel Bahnhof (train station) where we picked up two first class train tickets to Brussels for July 9, in order to...

Jul 1, 2014 - Gruyere on Canada Day

July 1 Happy Canada Day! We love these at-home feeling days as we catch our breath from the whirlwind of the last six weeks. Susann had left for work and Dylan was in daycare so our Canada Day started with a short walk and a bite of lunch on Lyss’s High Street. James worked a half day and showed up at 1:30 p.m. to drive us to Gruyere, 95 kms away. We travelled once more through the lovely Switzerland countryside of rolling hills, lakes and rivers, all backed in the distance by the magnificent Alps. Gruyere and its lovely chateau/castle sit...

Jun 30, 2014 - A reunion dinner with Kjell

June 30 Monday was going be a “taking it easy” day and we had a good sleep-in to kick it off. James was at work and Susann had taken Dylan off to his music lessons so we decided on a shopping trip to Lyss’s Migros shopping centre for some basic groceries, wine, etc. I was in a steep learning curve to drive James’s hybrid Peugeot and remember the Swiss rules of the road. I hadn’t driven in 6 weeks and, combined with getting used to starting a car that didn’t make any noise when I thought it should; it was a bit of an adventure. After the...

Jun 29, 2014 - On to Switzerland

June 29 Up for our 10:00 a.m. flight from Rome to Geneva, we made the easy check in and found our way to breakfast after security. It was our first McDonald’s experience on this trip and, I must say, the Egg McMuffin tasted pretty good. While I waited in the line, Brenda tried to buy a banana and some water at an adjacent outlet and, although they were fully staffed and just standing around, it was no sale as they weren’t open yet…only in Italy…it’s not as if they could use the tourist dollars. Now we found one more airline that can’t...
