Sep 28, 2016 - A change of scenery

Day 9 - 23 Sep Flexibility remains the driver for us - so much to do in Switzerland, so little time! The original plan for today was to take the William Tell Express, to Lugano, the first of the 'Big Three' panorama trains that we were planning to ride over the next few days. The standard route for the WTE is a three hour lake cruise along the length of Lake Lucerne to Fluelen, then connect with the dedicated train for the two hours or so on to Belinzona (where we were to change for Lugano) and Locarno. However, we still had a couple of...

Jul 5, 2016 - Como, Lake Como

Another buffet breakfast .. losing weight like crazy... A short drive across town to the Funicular Como-Brunate. This is a cable car to the top of the hill in Como. At the top of the hill there are several different hiking trails. Also the cable ride is 5,50 euros both ways. So up we go. The town at the top of the hill is Brunate, which a cute little town with a church around the first corner up the hill. At the point we chose the trail that goes up to the light house. Off we go, straight up hill sweating away. Once at the top of the hill...

Jul 4, 2016 - Lugano Switzerland

Got up a little sleepy today. Buffet breakfast and on the road. We were heading to Como today and did not realize that it was only a half hour drive. So we checked out the hotel for location and headed down the road to Lugano, Switzerland. Another 20 minutes away, who knew. We went through the boarder crossing that was just a bend in the road with two guys looking at the cars as they past. Once in Lugano we got on the hop on hop off little train. At the farthest stop we got off and headed to the cable car that took you up the hill. Our...

Sep 22, 2015 - refugees, traveling in the right direction

Siena, a tourist magnet, now behind us. Yesterday night we decided to return back home again, enough Italy for white man (and woman). We left Siena after the usual meaningless Italian breakfast(with good coffee) and survived the first 60kms of national highway, joined the Autostrada again, Northbound towards Bigogno, a small town uphill Lugano in Switzerland, where we would stay for one night. The drive was relaxed, as usual, crossed the Appenian mountains, the Italian way, with plenty curves, passed the city of Milano, forced Gina to look...

May 3, 2015 - Farewell Venice - Hellow Lugarno

Today we begin the next chapter of our trip. We are catching train at Venice station and going first to Milan, then Lugarno. We will stay a night there then catch a bus to Tirona where the Benina express goes over the Swiss Mountains. It should be a couple of interesting days just touring. Well today was quite an interesting day. We caught the ferry to the main station in Venice- from there everything went a bit haywire. We discovered we were at the wrong station (yes there are two stations in Venice) and we had to catch a train to another...

Jun 20, 2014 - Lake Lugano to St. Moritz

20th June 2014 We wake up to sunny skies again and beautiful views of the mountains from our balcony, what a shame we cannot stay longer. We take a taxi again to the bus station where we pick up the Bernini Bus Express which will take us to Tirano Railway Station where we will board the Bernini Express Train to St. Moritz. When we got to the Bus Station and were waiting in the appropriate Bus Stop, I noticed that everyone else had a ticket very different to our internet piece of paper. As we had arrived over 45 mins early, I have time to...

Jun 19, 2014 - Lake Lugano

19th June 2014 OK, time to say goodbye to Regal Princess. We are up early and find ourselves very quickly and efficiently on the quayside where we pick up our luggage by 8.45 am and then the fun begins. We have to find a way to the Railway Station in time for our 10.50 am train to Milan. The Railway station is only 10 minutes away, providing you were a bird. As we do not have wings unfortunately, the journey is not so easy. We could have got the people mover to the Piazza Roma (main square for the bus) but decide that due to the amount of...

May 28, 2014 - Loving Lugano

This is my favourite place so far. It's relaxing, the weather is gorgeous, flowers are blooming and the air smells sweet as people grow jasmine everywhere. We woke up feeling so refreshed and walked down to have a lovely breakfast. Jason and I went into the city for the morning and stumbled across a beautiful '?' present for him :) which was really great because we hadn't found anything outside of a Christmas ornament in Berlin. We came back to the hotel and then met Mom and Dad to go on a mountain adventure to mount Bre. We drove up a...

European Adventure

May 27, 2014 - Lugano

After a leisurely start to the day, we made our way to Lugano, which is just above Italy so as Dad phrased it- acts as an Italian appetizer for their country. Everyone speaks Italian and it is pretty much like being in another country but we still get to pay high Swiss prices for everything :). Along the way we saw Lindsay's Oma's yellow flower hills, some alpen cows and of course, beautiful mountains with a bunch of Heidi's houses on them!! I will upload later from my camera. We checked into our hotel which I found on tripadvisor.com...

Jul 15, 2013 - Lovely Lugano

Continuing our pattern of early wake up calls and quick departures we were en route to Switzerland by 7:45AM. We made our last stop in Italy at another rest stop for restrooms and final Italian purchases. After a few hours we arrived in Lugano, Switzerland a lovely resort town located right over the Italian border in Switzerland. Everyone here speaks Italian or German and they accept both the Euro and Swiss Franc for purchases. Unfortunately we didn't have enough of either for a Rolex watch for Bob. We did however get a free Rolex spoon...

European Adventure

Aug 18, 2012 - Lugano 1 - 3 Languages, 1 Day

I sound like a broken record talking about 'we saw the best views yet'..but they simply get better every day! We headed down from Crans-Montana through a valley taking us from French to German to Italian Switzerland, I'm confused already. To get to our final destination of the Ticino region we had to wind the car through the Furkapass and Gotthard Pass which were absolutely breathtaking. You can see why for much of European history the Alps are a major barrier..without roads this area is impassible. On the way up to the Furkapass you could...
