Jun 22, 2018 - Stoos and Fronalpstock

We topped off our final day here in Lucerne with a spectacular day even though it started off much cooler (low 60's) and cloudy. We made a large circle of the area NE of Lucerne and used almost every available mode of transportation. The Tell Pass that each of us had purchased let us use any public transportation in the Lucerne Zone free. We first caught a train from Lucerne to Schwyz where we caught a bus to the Stoos Bahnhof. The road is very curvy and narrow and we swear the driver of the two car bus thought he was driving a sport car)....

Jun 21, 2018 - Stans, Stanserhorn & Engelberg

Today we explored more of the area south of Lucerne by visiting a couple of small villages and one mountaintop. We headed out of Lucerne on a train, getting off at Stans as we wanted to catch the small railway (operating since 1893 with small wooden cars - only about 30 people can go at a time) that connects ½ way up the Stanserhorn with a gondola called the Cabrio. It is a cable car with an open deck on the top (like the open air tourist buses in England). There were a lot of people going up the mountain today so we had to wait 1 ½ hours...

Jun 20, 2018 - A visit to Mt Pilatus

What a great day we had for our adventure to the top of Mt Pilatus. We took the ferry from Lucerne to Alpnachstad where we boarded a cogwheel train (its 48% grade is the world's steepest) and went up the east side straight to the summit. We spent several hours there where Margaret/Kathy walked up a steep zig-zag trail to the top of the Esel (Donkey) which commemorates the pre-cable-car days when Queen Victoria came up Pilatus on the back of a donkey!! Later after lunch at the cliff site terrace restaurant, the Deatzs/Rineharts walked the...

Jun 19, 2018 - Lucerne, Switzerland

Our flight into Zurich arrived pretty much on time and after picking up our luggage and going through Passport Control, we walked across the street to the train station. Our timing was perfect as there was a direct train leaving in about 15 minutes. We arrived in Lucerne around 11:00 and left our luggage at the hotel while we explored the immediate area, made arrangements for a music/meal for Thursday evening, had lunch and visited the Tourist Information where we purchased our 3-day Tell Pass which will get us on any train, bus, ferry,...

All goes well,we disembark and after a short walk with our luggage in tow, we arrive at Hotel Des Alps and our 5th floor room. We have a great view from our small balcony. Our 12 day tour begins tomorrow with an orientation walk of Luzern at 5pm and dinner. We already met several other tour members at hotel check in. Feels like a fun group. The next day we take a boat ride to the small...

Dec 8, 2016 - Lucerne - Mt Pilatus & then walking tour of Lucerne

Webcam is looking good so off I go to Mt Pilatus. Always meet friendly people along the way to chat with. Shared the gondola and then the cable car with some locals. Energetic lady likes to walk the 2000m up the mountain - showed me the walking tracks. Will leave that thought with her. Today she is heading to the top for a wine and to sit in the sun - sounds like a plan. Again fab views. The wine, apple strudel and sun were great. Stroll time around the old town, Xmas markets with children's band - loving the food and atmosphere. Found one...

Sep 20, 2016 - Trains and buses and planes... and IKEA!

Day 6 - 20 Sep Not a great song title, but it accurately describes our day, which was spent getting from Peterborough to our apartment in Lucerne. We were up with the sparrows to get out for an early bus to Peterborough train station, where we had to wait an hour for our train to Stansted airport. This train was much more like home! Slow, somewhat grubby and tired, but it was comfortable and delivered us to Stansted in plenty of time to wait around for a couple of hours or so to board. Stansted is unlike any other airport we have used....

Aug 31, 2016 - Lucerne, a lake,and a mountainside rescue

Aug.31,2016 We leave the Alps by train, just as the cloud finally clears the South col of the Matterhorn and reveals it in all it's glory to all the people in Zermatt. 3 trains (more sprinting between platforms!), one through the mountains in a 20 km long tunnel, drops us in lovely Lucerne. Our hotel is by the river in the Old Town, always the best place to be in a European town, and we poke about exploring the cobbled streets and mural-covers buildings and the historic flower-draped covered bridges. It's cloudy today, so I predict that all...

Aug 7, 2016 - Lucerne

Sunday – city visit. Our campground is only 14km from Lucerne so it was an easy drive into the city. We were early enough so there were few visitors around. Having picked up a town guide at the campground we were set to go. We decided to walk the suggested tour route of the city. A little history first: It is believed that the city was founded in 1178 although there had been a significant monastery in the area prior to that. The city gained importance as a strategically located gateway for the growing commerce from the Gotthard trade route....
