Jun 15, 2016 - Zermatt to Locarno, Switzerland

Day 5 – Zermatt to Locarno – June 15, 2016 We received a present this morning – and for some reason a few of us woke up early - independently - and looked out the window to see the sun shining vibrantly on the Matterhorn – it was about 5:30AM. We did not need to be up that early – we just did. We also then heard the “sheep bells” and saw the sheep on the move again – to different greener pastures on the mountainside. Bags had to be ready at 6:30AM but breakfast was not until 7AM. Departure was not until 8AM so we had a leisurely breakfast...

Nov 25, 2013 - Switzerland

We went to Switzerland with Anthony's co-worker Kevin to work on a project near Locarno Switzerland at a Gucci Warehouse- unfortunately Anthony was unable to buy Sara anything! The town of Locarno was very beautiful. It was in a valley surrounded by large Alpine Mountains with a lake in the middle. The water was very clear and VERY deep. There was shopping and many restaurants- however everything in Switzerland is priced very high. We typically spent about 80 franks or so for dinner. One night we had cheese fondue which was very good. We...

Jul 11, 2013 - More Moon and Stars

Our last day in Ticino and after tidying up at Casa Amalia, we drove down the road to explore the resort city of Locarno. Locarno sits on Lake Magiorre, a huge lake that is partially in Switzerland and partially in Italy. A pretty city with lots of sailboats on the lake, a flower lined promenade, some family friendly beaches, a castle and a great Old Town and main square. We spent the afternoon wandering along the lake shore before meeting Sven, who arrived by train, for dinner at a pizza joint. We were joined by Joe from California and...

Dec 16, 2012 - Locarno

Where to go next? We still have a couple of days before we need to be in Milan to fly to Prague. After throwing a few darts at Google maps we've decided to head up into Switzerland, to a place called Locarno. It sits on the northern end of Lake Maggiore. We stayed there last year, at Verbania, down at the southern end. So, off we went. There is still a good covering of snow all the way to the lakes area. After passing Milan, we headed north towards Switzerland. We'll be crossing the border at Como, where we stayed the year before. Crossed...

Nov 11, 2012 - The Centovalli

The train I am taking is the Centovalli. A Meters gauge line running directly east for 2 hours over the mountains towards Locarno in Switzerland. The scenery is as extraordinary as the train route is amazing, with its 83 bridges and 34 tunnels.Sometimes a line that is forgotten, it's a Swiss company, but most of the route is in Italy, and an engineering masterpiece. The company is called SSIF or FART depending on which country you are in. What this means is that today for my birthday I am riding on a fart!!, not a nice thing to say but...

Aug 19, 2012 - Lugano 2 - Paradise

Had a bit of an adventure day, we got up late and our goal was to get to the summit of Mt. Bre' overlooking the city of Lugano. My parents were taking the funicular, I chose a path less travelled. They dropped me off in a small olive garden town called Gandria by the Lake and I climbed... It wasn't a sketchy path like some but it was HOT. There were also hundreds of lizards everywhere so I chose not to rest long on the ground. I got to the village of Bre and explored the old Italian-style town, then climbed the summit to meet mom and paps....

May 20, 2011 - randonnée à travers les alpes
