Sep 5, 2017 - Lausanne & Lake Geneva Day 9 & 10

Day 9: Gruyères and Lausanne 3 Hour Bus Ride, Tour of town and dinner This morning we'll take a scenic drive to Lake Geneva, tracing a route so spectacular it's been given the name "Golden Pass." We'll pause in the storybook town of Gruyères to test our French and see if a cheese by any other name would taste as sweet. After lunch, we'll continue on to pretty and progressive Lausanne, where we'll tour the town with a local guide and sample more of the region's delicacies at dinner together. Sleep in Lausanne (2 nights). Bus: 3 hrs. Walking:...

Aug 15, 2015 - To Geneva via Lausanne

Saturday, August 15th. We awoke to a rainy overcast day so decided to hit the low road instead of the high less travelled one. The rain and low cloud would have made it difficult to see anything anyway. By the time we were driving though Thun (which we had seen from Schilthorn with binoculars) the rain had stopped but it was still overcast. The trip took us just south of Bern to Lausanne then along the north side of Lake Geneva to Geneva. Our campground was through the city and about 10 km along the south side of the lake. There were a few...

Jul 1, 2013 - Canada Day - Swiss style

After the adventures yesterday, we took a bit of a rest and had a lazy start to the day. Once we were all packed up and on the road, we had a nice easy 5.5hr drive to get to Switzerland to see an old family friend. We made great time and got to the Mont Blonc tunnel just after lunch. We were trying to decide whether to go over the top on the Petit St Bernard pass, or take the tunnel, but seeing as how we had the late start we decided that we had better make some progress and push on. After stopping for a coffee and ice cream, we made our...

Nov 10, 2012 - Wet to Lausanne

A very wet morning as I opened he curtains, not a good start to the day. By the time I had breakfast and then began walking to the station. It has eased off a tad, but still not very nice, not a day for walking around today. Like all Swiss stations, there is great deal of activity at rain time, with trains and buses all arriving at the same time, all connect with each other then head off to their destinations, this means that the station is at first quiet, a flush of people changing trains, and then the station goes back to sleep, this is...

Oct 1, 2012 - Chuff chuff, parp, parp

1 Oct 2012 No thats not a train, thats La Suisse, a 102 year old steam powered paddle steamer that we spent the day on. Awoke at 8 after a bad night for C. As well as the coughing, some bloke in the next room was snoring so that didn't help :-) Had breakfast and a long chat with the lady that serves up the breakfast. Then we checked the forecast with the concierge and headed out. Today will be warm but cloudy, no rain. Could be worse. We caught the Metro down to Ouchy and as we were way too early for the 11:45 sailing to Chateaux de...

Sep 30, 2012 - Lost in Lausanne

30 Sept 2012 Well, we went over the Rue Grand St Jean (Big St John Street!) to a small restaurant for tea last night - we were the only non locals I think. So we sat there encircled by sizzling fondu's and C had Rosti, and J had Chicken Cordon Bleu. Very nice - we thought we might come back for a non horsey fondu at a later date. Anyway, we awoke about 8 and got ourselves ready for breakfast which was served in the 1st floor dining room. The usual style of Eurpean far, but plenty of it and nice quality. Most others in the room were talking...

Sep 29, 2012 - Jittery Horses

26 Sept 2012 We have to leave Interlaken today. But decided C needed to see a doc first. Hotel rang and made a booking. The Doc (female) said she has a cold or some sort of virus - not bacterial (they do a blood test on the spot which is a useful thing to do) So rest (not sure how we can travel and rest??), fluids, aspro, and some magic syrup she gave her for the cough. Lunched in the bakery and then got our bags, farewelled the hotel staff and walked to the station. No problems re trains - first one to Bern we had the carriage to ourselves...

Jun 12, 2012 - Lucca to Switzerland

The original plan had been to drive into Switzerland stopping just over the border. However Mike was enjoying the scenery and the driving so much we drove all the way to Lausanne. This was fortunate as the next day, when it wasn't raining it was overcast and misty with poor visibility. OK for driving but not for scenery at a distance. I was in the front for the section approaching the Italian/Swiss border so that's when my photos were taken. None of Switzerland. Crops that we weren't expecting: Paddy fields of Rice in Italy and grapes...

Europe 2012

Oct 6, 2011 - Switzerland

Just a few pictures from Switzerland. The upload took much longer than expected so i'm going to write about it tomorrow. But until then let these pictures peak your interest. i also added pictures from Paris you can peruse. Okay so Switzerland could possibly be one of the most beautiful countries i've visited thus far. I went to visit Bern and Geneve on top of Lausanne and all three have a different charm about them. There is really not much to see in each of the cities but the beauty of the building and the surroundings makes the time fly...

Sep 27, 2008 - Lausanne

Woke up this morning a bit late since I went to bed around 230am. Cold, gloomy and cloudy day. Regardless, I wanted to put my regional pass to use and visit a small town called Gruyeres. Gruyeres is close to the pre alps and is known for their picturesque architecture, numerous activities and hikes, and most important......their cheese! So I arrived in Gruyeres and went to the cheese museum for 7 francs. A cow named cherry led me through the tour and I saw how cheese was made and why the best cheese in Switzerland is from around here. The...
