Nov 29, 2016 - Fabulous Jungfrau

Had a fabulous day out & about today. To go up the Jungfrau was on the top of my list here in Switzerland - but with only a 1 day window in my itinerary the possibility of it happening was quite remote. Early morning I checked the webcam up the mountain and Switzerland had turned on a great day. I have some fantastic photos and memories - also sore feet and a healthy, tired, weary body. YES - one happy lady Sleep time soon. I leave the German speaking Switzerland and head to the French speaking Montreux tomorrow. I have a VIP seat booked...

Aug 3, 2016 - Jungfrau Eiger walk and then the Eiger Trail

We took the train from Grindelwald up to Kleine Scheidegg with the intention of taking the Jungfrau train one stop up to Eigergletscher to then walk the Eiger Trail. There was so many tour groups at Kleine Scheidegg on the platform and people trying to get on the train to go up to the Jungfrau we gave up and decided we would walk the trail up to Eigergletscher. It was a good walk and gave us great views across to the glaciers. At Eigergletscher we began the walk of the Eiger Trail. This 5.8km trail took us to the foot of the imposing Eiger...

Aug 12, 2015 - Heading up to Jungfraujoch - The Top of Europe

Wednesday, August 12th. We lucked out with this campground. It was an 8 minute walk downhill to the train station and free bus passes for the trip back, which was uphill. In chatting to the owners at reception we found out that it is family owned and run. The campground was started by her grandparents and they will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next summer. People that she played with are returning with their children and grandchildren. Because everyone who worked at the desk had grown up playing, hiking, skiing, fishing and living...

Jul 15, 2015 - The Top of Europe! And crowded hot trains

The Top of Europe Railway Trip - Jungfrau mountain Well we had to do it. We might never get here again so with that in mind, we had to bite the very expensive bullet and get up to the top of the Jungfrau by train. This is the highest railway in the world I believe, and is very popular with tourists - but not the locals, most of whom have never done this.... just like we've never been whale watching or swimming with the dolphins I guess. So up early (again - only earlier this morning than we did yesterday on our day to Lucerne). It was...

Dec 24, 2014 - A Wow Day

Wednesday 24 December 2014 Weather: -7 on top of the Jungfrau, clear but with a bitterly cold wind Steps: 9,367 On Christmas Eve we boarded the cog railway for our trip to the highest railway station in Europe, the Jungfraujoch. We bought a round trip ticket at enormous expense to our budget and boarded our first train which took us to Kleine Scheidegg. The train was full of skiers and snowboarders heading for the ski fields so there were people standing in the aisles all the way. On arrival we all fell out of the train and milled around...

Jul 1, 2013 - Canada Day at the Top of Europe

Happy Canada Day! A spectacular day with not a cloud in the sky so we decided we'd better head to the "Top of Europe". Not an auspicious start as we got stuck in the parking garage in Thun. We had purchased a 5 day parking pass and while it let us out yesterday, it didn't work today. The nice woman in the car behind us tried to help and an elderly gentleman actually tried pushing us out of the way but we finally had to get the crabby parking lot attendant to come out of his office and let us out. Dale tried to explain with his few words of...

Dec 31, 2012 - Schilthorn

Another WOW day. We did this trip back in 1978 but it still has the WOW factor. We caught the train from Wilderswild to Lauterbrunnen, a cable car to Grutschalp, another train to the delightful village of Murren, and a further cable car via Birg up to Schilthorn and Piz Gloria. Now we are in James Bond territory, on top of the world with 360 degree mountain panorama, the most outstanding being the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Yesterday we were amongst them, today we are looking at them. We have perfect sunny weather, ideal for a snow...

Dec 30, 2012 - Jungfraujoch

WOW! What an experience. A train ride through the lovely villages of Lauterbrunnen and Wengen, with the most wonderful visions of snow covered mountains on either side, eventually bringing us the view of the gigantic mountains of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. We are in ski country, people everywhere with snow suits, skis, poles, helmets and funny snow shoes. We change to a clog wheel train in Klein Scheidegg, then wind up the mountains passing through several tunnels that go through both the Eiger and Monch Mountains. It is the centenary...

Sep 4, 2009 - Jungfrau

Today we headed for Jungfraubahnen – Top of Europe. The railway was built by Adolf Guyer-Zeller in 1894 and it took 15 years to complete. We went on two cog railway trains to reach the top which is some 3500m above sea level. As we headed further up the mountain the colder it got. Lucky I had my ski vest, layers, gloves, beanie, water proof jacket..even with all the layers I could still feel the cold. The view platform was amazing, moutains covered with snow. Now it was supposed to rain today but for the morning it stayed fine. As the day...

Jan 30, 2009 - The Top of Europe and Glow

Yesterday we decided that we could no longer wait to be weathered out to do some sight seeing in Switzerland so we planned a trip to Lauderbrunnen. Each morning that we fly, Jon and the guys attend a 9 am pilots briefing, they come home for a nice breakfast and then we go to the field and inflate about 11:30 am. Here, we decide to go sightseeing and we are up at 5 am and on the road by 6:30 am…our normal Colorado ballooning schedule…the crew was confused. We traveled 2 hrs. by car through Interlaken and Lake Thun to Lauterbrunen and took...

Feb 6, 2008 - Jungfrau

Today we headed to the ‘Top of Europe’. We caught the train from Bern at 0804 and arrived in Interlaken at 0857. We then changed trains and left for Lauterbrunnen at 0905 arriving there at 0925. These two trains were mostly in the valley and we had hardly climbed very high into the Alps. We left Lauterbrunnen on a cog railway at 0939. These trains run with a gear underneath since the grade is too steep for a regular powered train to climb. There are teeth running parallel and between the rails that the gear meshes with to help pull the...

Oct 3, 2006 - Mount Pilates & country tour

October 3rd. We actually had the morning at our leisure which was so nice because we have been so busy. We spent the time just wandering around the shops. There are mostly watch shops, bakeries, and chocolate shops galore, so yes, we did buy some chocolate to take home. In the afternoon we took a trip up Mount Pilatus. We went up the mountain by a 4 person gondola part way then got off and took a 40 person gondola to the top. It was a 40 minute ride of beautiful splendor. There were houses very high up the mountain with, yes, roads leading...
