Aug 1, 2016 - Swiss National Day

It had been a noisy night with thunderstorms but Swiss National Day dawned cloudy but dry. We decided we would walk down to Interlaken for the town parade. The parade was colourful but lacked the organisation and efficiency you usually expect of the Swiss. We enjoyed it all the same.

Jul 5, 2016 - Walk into Interlaken

As usual we spent our first day exploring the local area and getting information on what to see and do. We had visited Interlaken on a week’s holiday about 15 years ago with Heather’s mum but only remembered staying at the Grand Victoria Hotel and going up the Jungfrau. From the campground we walked into Unterseen (the old town of Interlaken) and then explored Interlaken which sits between the two lakes of Thunsee (Lake Thun) and Brienzersee (Lake Brienz) The town was very busy with lots of tourists. We found the Grand Hotel overlooking the...

Jul 4, 2016 - Heading into Switzerland

Today we headed north and east into Switzerland. We had to stop at the border to buy our required vehicle documentation for the bus to travel on Swiss roads. That was quickly and easily done. The journey was easily undertaken on the excellent Swiss motorways. Only the last bit as we neared Interlaken was on ordinary roads but even they were well engineered despite the hilly terrain. We arrived at the campground safely. Tony had to back down the internal campground road to get into our pitch (no turning room) which was a little tense but...

Jun 18, 2016 - Lucerne to Interlaken

Day 8 – Lucerne (Luzern) to Interlaken – June 18, 2016 Today was another early day – since we had rescheduled the boat cruise from the prior day – and it was a good thing that we did because it had rain the day prior – and we probably could not have seen much at all. We departed for the boat at 8:15AM, immediately got on (it was only our group of 30 something people) and off we went. The water was quite calm and the wind was not blowing and there even was some blue sky. The Captain was very knowledgeable and gave a commentary about the...

Sep 30, 2015 - Interlaken, Switzerland and Trummelback Falls

Today, we weren't planning to do much but relax. However, I got the great idea to go shopping in Interlaken. Robert and Leah wanted to go hiking at Trummelback Falls, so we all headed to Interlaken together. We found lots of great souvenirs and watched the para sailors jump off the mountain and soar through the sky and land in the park next to where we were shopping. We ate at an Italian restaurant and I had bread soup. I think they used rye bread for the base. I actually liked it a lot! Afterward, we decided to all go check out the...

Aug 11, 2015 - On to Wildersil,Switzerland

Tuesday, August 11th. Austrian to Lichtenstein to Switzerland We woke to a mix of sun and clouds but before we took off for Interlaken (Between Lakes) we had to discover the source of the noise. We traipsed down a grassy forest path and found not a babbling brook but a raging river full of very noisy rapids. With that mystery solved we headed out. Once again we chose to take the squiggly road on the map instead of the 4-lane highway. In spite of the sometimes treacherous road we were well rewarded by our decision. The first pass we went up...

Dec 27, 2014 - A Snow Day

Saturday 27 December 2014 Weather: -2° with snow in Interlaken, rain in Thun Steps: 12,711 Instead of waking to drifts of snow on the ground this morning, we woke to snow gently falling and about 4 inches of snow had settled on everything overnight. More excitement and more photographs ensued. We had discussed our travel plans for today at dinner last night and agreed that with the weather forecast for snow all day, it would be a waste of time heading to Zermatt as views of the Matterhorn would most likely to be limited. The trip to...

Apr 25, 2014 - Day 23 – Friday 25 April – Interlaken

Today we had a beautiful buffet breakfast at Hotel de la Prix. We were the only ones there and the sun was shining in the windows and outside was a view to the snow-capped mountains. The hotel manager brought us a hot chocolate each and served the chocolate powder in a glass cup and had heated and frothed milk in a jug. As uncouth as I am, I just poured the hot milk into the glass cup with ALL the chocolate and then stirred it. Megan started laughing and told me I am supposed to spoon the desired quantity of chocolate into the tea cup and...

Apr 24, 2014 - Day 22 – Thursday 24 April – Reims, Strasbourg, Basel, Interlaken

Up early today and breakfast in Reims city centre for a croissant and hot chocolate (because the coffee in France sucks). We then took a walk through to the lesser known Notre Dame gothic cathedral and were “wowed” again. As we were walking through the massive and breathtaking place we were most fortunate that a church mass had just started so we joined in. It of course was all in French but still a wonderful experience. When mass had finished and we finished walking around this incredible place we had to hot foot it back to pack up,...

Aug 28, 2013 - King Ludwig's Palace

JOSH: Yesterday we went to one of Ludwig II of Bavaria's castles. Here's a little background information about Ludwig. Ludwig II was born 30 minutes before midnight on the night before his grandfather's birthday. The palace kept quiet for an hour and then announced that the baby was born at the same time and date of its grandfather. When he was growing up his mother told stories to the children of Bavaria. The children were told to treat Ludwig as a friend. The stories stopped after a boy hit Ludwig behind the ear. Ludwig was given a set of...

Jan 1, 2013 - New Years Day

We attended the New Years Day celebrations at Interlaken, with entertainment, food stalls and fireworks. A happy atmosphere and impressive fireworks. Found a nice wine bar to while away an hour or so, and indulged in one of the street markets huge sausages, before catching the free bus back to the hotel.
