Aug 27, 2016 - Fly out to Geneva via London

Had a nice flight to London then a slight layover and off to Geneva. Decided I need the windows like they had in the plane - push a button and they dim the sunlight coming in. Slept most of the leg to Geneva as I only got around 4 hours on the way to London. Finally watched the Revenant and then on to My big fat Greek wedding 2- great comic relief after the drudgery of Leo suffering in the wilds. Met up with friends in Geneva and took the Alpy bus to Chamonix. The mountain views on the ride were impressive and increased the anticipation of...

Jun 26, 2016 - Geneva

Weather: Hot and Sunny Must be Sunday so good day to visit a major city so we made the short journey across the border to Geneva in Switzerland. We had to stop at the border to buy the vignette to drive on the Swiss motorways but otherwise straightforward. We found parking on the street (no charge on a Sunday) very close to the old town and the lakeshore. Geneva has a long and illustrious history. It was occupied by the Romans, its medieval fairs drew interest from far and wide and in the 16th century John Calvin during the Reformation...

Jun 2, 2016 - Wet Thursday in Evian

The news here is about people dying in floods and enormous numbers of refugees drowning as they try to get to Europe. So I am not complaining that we had quiet a rainy day. We drove to where they make water (Evian) and had lunch by the lake. Lunch was in a Tibetan restaurant decorated with anything from China to India. On the way we saw how using a helicopter they put these enormous nets up against the so steep sides of the road so that most (note not all) rocks on the steep (I use that word a lot here) mountains don't fall to the road. Two...

Jun 1, 2016 - It is Wednesday, must be Geneva

Lots to do today so got an early start....... 8:30, yes not that early but early for us. Local markets called and after a meaningless chat with a nougat seller (We had no idea what the other was saying) we drove to Geneva. 40 minutes to drive there, another 40 to get thru the traffic. In time for the guided tour of the UN. Not interested but I went anyway. Fascinating. I even answered one of the questions..... Correctly. One about the official languages of the UN - Australian, I got wrong. 195 member states, USA pays 22% of the 1.3 billion...

Feb 14, 2016 - Geneva

We headed to Geneva on a whim. We received one of those enticing emails from SNCF with a special rate and suddenly we found ourselves with a train reservation, Airbnb booking and a three day Geneva visitor pass. We arrived at the train station in Geneva and first stop was the nearby tourist information office for a street map so we can find our Airbnb flat, and the booklet listing attractions included with the visitor pass. They were very friendly and helpful. Using our new street map we walked to our Airbnb flat on Chamonix Avenue. The...

Aug 16, 2015 - Touring Geneva

Sunday, August 16th There was quite a storm during the night and we awoke once again to rain and overcast skies. As we were in no particular hurry we decided to play it by ear. Around noon, despite an 80 % chance of showers the sun came out. Bill had the office call a cab and we headed into Geneva. Geneva as a city was a disappointment to us. Mind you after the last 3 days in the mountains it would have to be pretty spectacular to impress us. In the pamphlet given to us at the campgrounds there were pages after pages of where to shop, eat...

Jun 13, 2015 - Our final day in Geneva

We have been extremely fortunate to have had a full week of fairly reasonable weather, although being Phoenicians London was a bit cold and Paris and Geneva were a bit hot and humid. On our final morning we started our day with a quick jump across the border from Switzerland to France. Just across the French border there is a cable car that carries you to an altitude of over 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) in less than five minutes. Mont Salève is apparently the place to be for sports lovers. You can go paragliding, rock climbing, mountain...

Jun 12, 2015 - Arrived in Geneva, Switzerland

We made our way from Beaune, France to Geneva., Switzerland. Before heading to our hotel we made a quick stop at The United Nations Office at Geneva. The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is the second-largest of the four major office sites of the United Nations (second to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City). It is located in the Palais des Nations building constructed for the League of Nations between 1929 and 1938 and expanded in the early 1950s and late 1960s. Across the street from the United Nations Office is a...

May 26, 2015 - Geneva II

Well, what a difference 12 hours of sleep can make! Woke up late and had a delicious breakfast. I forgot to say that for dinner last night we went to Cassanova's (I know, Italian in Switzerland?), but their specialty is fresh perch from Lake Geneva. It was delicious served buttery with tartare sauce and fries. Yum. We walked to the train station to rent bikes, expecting to pay 20 sf for the day when they informed us that they were free for 4 hours! What a deal! So we rode across the lake and then along it for a few miles, seeing beautiful...

May 25, 2015 - Jetting to Geneva

Well, we made it! The flights were pretty easy and we both got a little sleep. When we got to Paris we had to go through security again, so Norm got his DDP that he bought at the SD airport confiscated. Needless to say, he was a little ticked! We got to our hotel around 4pm and rested a little, then took a small yellow boat around Lake Geneva. We went out to dinner and are trying to stay awake a little longer. My cousin, Melissa, who lives here, left us a bag with goodies and maps, which was so nice. The ironic thing is that we came to see...

Apr 30, 2015 - Day 16. 30/4/15. London to Geneva.

Day 16. 30/4/15. Up early and ready to leave hotel at 8.45am. Way too early to leave for a 1.45pm flight from Gatwick, but Ian's become a real worrier, and this time it turned out the right thing to do. We got to Victoria station with no problems, and asked for direction to the Gatwick Express. Sorry - it's not running due to signal failure somewhere down the line. Ian was given a printed sheet with directions of which train to catch to Blackfriers, then another train to Gatwick. Up and down stairs, and there were lots if them, lugging our...
