Day 12 - 26 Sep In our research of the 'great' train journeys of Switzerland, we came across quite a mixed bag of reviews concerning the Glacier Express. Many were incredibly enthusiastic - about the train itself, the service and the scenery - while a significant minority was quite negative - about the very same things! Reviews can be quite confusing! A much better sleep last night, must have been that quality Merlot. A line that has always had my interest is that of the Bern Lotschberg Simplon railway, aka BLS. Very much an independent railway from the main federal railway, it has always been different. The route was very much the main artery from Italy to Northern Europe, but the completion of the Simplon base tunnel, means that trains now take a different route. The journey back is just as stunning its downhill all the way, a different train, with a traditional train set like I remember from before. At Visp we are turned out the train to connect with the mainline service back to Brig. And on arrival in Brig main station, I exit onto the forecourt and the train I was on from Zermatt is just arriving, a surreal experience seeing your train arrive after you do.... Aug 22, 2006 - Heaven on Earth: Gimmelwald

In the very heart of the Swiss Alps (an area known as the Berner Oberland), perched high on the edge of a cliff, lies the tiny, timeless, sleepy village of Gimmelwald. That's where we elected to spend the next few days. The Lilliputian country of Liechtenstein was on the way, so we decided to stop there.
