Jul 9, 2011 - The Cabin At Lake Neuchatel

July 9, 2011 Saturday dawned with a threatening forecast on a day we had planned for on the shore of Lake Neuchatel. The sun disagreed with the forecast and burst through on our short drive to Lyss to pick James up at 10:00 a.m. Susann was staying home with Dylan and we left his always smiling face for the 30-minute drive to James’s boss, Kjell’s cabin on Lake Neuchatel. We arrived at the remote location to be met by Kjell’s son, Nils, a really great guy with lots of Kjell’s love of life about him. Kjell’s cabin is a rare entity in...

Jul 8, 2011 - A Shopping Spree And A Country Dinner

July 8, 2011 Penny and Brenda had decided to go on a shopping spree into Bern by train and their plan didn’t include me. I tried to hide my disappointment (kidding, of course) as I dropped them at the local Bahnhof (train station). Susann had provided a list of prime shopping stores and Rosmarie left train instructions before she headed off for a day at the office and babysitting later in the day. In the meantime I put in a couple of hours catching up on my blog entries where I had fallen behind. Having caught up on a lot of our story, I...

Jul 5, 2011 - We Return To Brugg/Biel

July 5, 2011 James had worked well into the dark the previous night to finish his painting of the water gate metalwork…looking good. While he and I did some morning clean-up of the grounds and storage areas, the girls were stripping the beds and getting breakfast ready. We began our packing up and were sad to leave Fouvent and the miller’s house. Offers to help Rosmarie do the laundry and house-keeping fell on deaf ears as she insisted it was her custom and desire to complete those chores in the quiet by herself. Knowing Brenda and Penny’s...

Jun 30, 2011 - Fly Swatter Lunch

June 30, 2011 This was a day for relaxing and taking it easy. Brenda had a hair appointment scheduled for 3:30 but otherwise we had nothing definite. Rosmarie went into the office and would return to take Brenda for her hair cut. On our previous drive to the Fabrik, we had passed a roadside restaurant that showed promise so we decided to strike out for there for lunch. Using my unerring sense of direction, we were soon lost before I wisely turned on the GPS. With Tom Tom’s help we were there in a matter of minutes and found it a bit cool...

Jun 28, 2011 - A Visit To The Fabrik And Buren

June 28, 2011 Brenda and Penny had been whingeing for some time about getting their nails done and Rosmarie had arranged appointments for them with her house cleaner, Frau Kappa, on this day (I know…I said the same thing, “You’re house cleaner is a manicurist??”). It turns out she’s a mighty fine manicurist who works out of her apartment and, apparently, a good house cleaner, too. Penny had the first appointment in the morning so Rosmarie dropped her off on her way to work and I picked her up an hour later, thanks to Tom Tom’s unerring...

Jun 27, 2011 - A Newly Minted Swiss Citizen

June 27, 2011 Rosmarie was supposed to go to work this Monday but her eyes had gotten worse. She had a regular ophthalmologist appointment already booked for Tuesday but they were willing to take her for an emergency on Monday. While Brenda and Penny readied for the day, I was off with Rosmarie to her doctor and the wait was a little longer than she expected, so I: • Had a coffee and a croissant • Bought our train tickets for Paris on July 10 • Got a haircut …not a bad set of accomplishments in an hour. It turned out that Rosmarie had...

Jun 26, 2011 - Vue Des Alpes And An Antique Fair

June 26, 2011 We enjoyed a Sunday sleep-in and woke up to find James, Susann and Dylan here already. They had a lovely formal Swiss breakfast laid on with fresh breads Susann had purchased just hours before. Rosmarie’s coffee maker was still in our memories from 2006, turning out cappuccino, espresso, lattes and good frothy black coffee. Rosmarie had risen that morning with sore and puffy eyes and feeling a lot of discomfort that gradually got worse during the day. Our plans for the day were discussed over breakfast and we settled on a...

Jun 25, 2011 - Nice, France To Biel, Switzerland

June 25, 2011 The last day aboard ship is a very different from the previous 2 weeks of loving tender care, as the announcements to clear the ship and collect your dockside luggage come fast and furious after the 6:00 a.m. wake up call. We were off by 8:15, in a taxi heading for Nice Airport and our 11:45 a.m. flight on Easyjet to Basel, Switzerland. Once again, we joined the cattle call line-ups for “Cheap Flights” with pushing and shoving Europeans (Brenda would say I fit in quite well in that scenario!). We were a bit late into Basel but...

Sep 20, 2008 - Biel/Bienne/Bern Sep 20-23

I chose Biel for the simple fact that it was one of the smaller towns in Switzerland that I have never heard of until I did a bit of research and I wanted to see how people lived there. I stayed with a really nice couple, Michael and Anna, along with their other roommate, Dominic. These guys were major film buffs and a lot of fun to spend time with. Saturday night they took me out to one of the bars/clubs and intruduced me to some of their friends and showed me how they partied. Sunday night was movie night at their house and we had pasta...
