Jun 12, 2018 - Welcome to Switzerland

After being generously escorted to Chiassi (the traditional border between Italy and Switzerland) by my home exchange host, Salvatore, I burst into the station, not to dirndl clad Heidi like Swiss people, chocolates and cows but a somewhat dirty station, and the only toilet was (gasp)– a filthy squat toilet! After landing back to reality, I put my extra 20 minutes to good use and sought an ATM to extract Swiss Francs from. Having already spent approximately 10 times more in public transport online for Swiss trips than you would in the rest...

Sep 7, 2017 - Avenches to Bern Day 11 & 12

Day 11: To Bern via Ancient Rome Final Tour Day-Travel to Bern and dinner We'll begin our day with a time-travel visit to the village of Avenches. Two thousand years ago, as ancient Aventicum, this was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire. A short drive catapults us a thousand years ahead to Bern, the country's present-day capital and our final stop. After a guided tour of the city center, we'll sit down with a local for a cultural Q&A session on all things Swiss. Tonight, we'll gather for a farewell dinner together, where we'll...

Switzerland 2017

Jul 10, 2016 - Bern

Sunday so it’s a big city visit. We headed into Bern the capital of Switzerland. We easily found car parking, again a Sunday experience and started our exploration. The city of Bern was founded in 1191, Duke Berchtold V. von Zähringen commissioned the nobleman Cuno von Bubenberg to build a city on a peninsula which would offer protection on three sides. The Clock Tower (Zytglogge) still standing today was the city’s first gate. Over the centuries the city expanded and in the late Middle Ages Bern was seen as the largest and most powerful...

Jun 16, 2016 - Thursday - last day in Switzerland, visit Bern

Beautiful clouds and mist greeted us this morning. No boat ride on the lake so a visit to the medieval parts of Bern wa chosen. The hour and a bit drive was very scenic as you would expect - we took the road less traveled as one of us forgot to tell the gps to use toll roads. Beautiful villages, great architecture, interesting Agrciulture and no traffic to speak of. The journey was made even more pleasant by my sparkling conversation. Apparently this area has had more rain during these months than in then last 100 years. Had a bit of fun...

Jun 12, 2016 - Bern, Switzerland

Day 2 – Bern - June 12, 2016 After a good night’s sleep we had wake up calls for 8AM – and our alarms went off simultaneously. We dressed quickly and put our suitcases just outside our rooms by 8:30AM. We then went down for breakfast – a buffet with to-order omelets, pancakes, bacon, sausage, fruit, cheese, bread and a few local favorites – and of course 3 kinds of juice and coffee. We all ate something – and it was a good thing because we did not get lunch until after 2PM (but that is another story). We had to check out of our rooms and be...

Aug 18, 2015 - Tour day 11 - Jungfrau Switzerland

Very early start today (even though it is a free day in Switzerland) as we decided to go to the top of Jungfrau at the top of the Swiss Alps. Now if you do not already know - this is the highest point in Europe and I strongly suggest you GTS so you know what I mean. This is the biggest highlight of the tour for me and an a massive big tick on the bucket list. I am so excited I can hardly breathe - so having breakfast is just not working for me. The hotel has packed us a lunch - for those of you who do not know Switzerland is very very...

Our European/UK Trip

Aug 17, 2015 - Tour day 10 - Switzerland

Early start to the day so we can get to Pisa before it gets crowded. So normal breaky then on the bus - Pisa is about 1 hour drive. We arrived there and got hassled by the locals (North African's) trying to sell us umbrella's, poncho's and watches...............they run fast when the Polizia arrive and apparently it is illegal to purchase from them. They are a pain in the butt and followed us for nearly 2 blocks - and not one sale!! So we walk into Pisa and it is a beautiful place. The tower really does lean - did you know that back in the...

Jul 12, 2015 - Aare is Awesome

46°56'45" N 7°26'42" E Berne, Bern Switzerland Crazy awesome day. We saw the Bear Park Sanctuary, though unfortunately closed for renovation. We saw the Rose Gardens, and the Berne Historical Museum as well as the Einstein Museum and Einstein's house, all before noon. Around noon we headed to the hostel to grab some swimsuits and prepared to spend the rest on the day on the Aare River. This river is amazing, a crazy translucent blue-turquoise. The current is super strong, but not dangerously so, many people float on rafts, and many just...

Jul 11, 2015 - On The Road Again

46°56'45" N 7°26'42" E Berne, Bern Switzerland Another day of travel was in store for us. We started with a 7 hour bus ride (though I can't complain, we sat on the second story, and the seats and bus in general were super comfy). This got us into Mannheim, and on the way we drive on the epic autobahn system. The views were really great. From there we took a three hour train into Berne, also pretty nice, and with an even better view. The night before this we had been up until about 12:30, and back up at five. And when you add this in top...

Jul 6, 2015 - Bern and a Swim

Bern! Oh the heat! It is so hot here at the moment. It is lovely. Today we had a bit of a late start, breakfast at 10.00 - real holiday stuff! We also took a while to decide what was going to happen today. We all decided a swim would be good, and Marina knew of a free swimming pool next to the river at Bern so that became our plan. Bern is the capital of Switzerland and only a 20-30 min drive away from Neyruz where Pit & Marina's house is. It was an easy drive there too, although even Marina used a GPS to get us there. She hasn't been to...

Jul 3, 2013 - A Day in Bern

The forecast was for rain today and everyone said that we should go to Bern on a rainy day because it had "arcaded" shops so the rain didn't matter. We weren't sure exactly what that meant but Bern was on our list of places to visit and it was a short train ride from Thun. Bern is a beautiful city and the Old Town is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The buildings are a mixture of Medieval and Renaissance architecture and the "arcades" are covered arches and walkways. All of the shops are located under the arcades so the on and off rain didn't...

Dec 29, 2012 - Bern

We missed the train by 5 seconds, why is Swiss rail so efficient? Drove through some awesome valleys today with blue coloured lakes, surrounded by snow capped mountains, with the white peaks setting off the bluest of blue skies. Yes, we had sun today and the sunglasses got an airing. We arrived in Bern and set off down the Main Street, passing statues, the big clock tower, other buildings and ending at the bear pits. Not overly comfortable with this, however the area provided for the bears has been considerably expanded since we were here...
