Aug 20, 2014 - Karlstad and Lake Vanern

After the heavy rain of the previous day we woke to sunshine but a lot cooler. It had a very autumn feel. Karlstad sits on the shores Lake Vȁnern which is 5,600sq kilometres and has a length of 140km. A real whopper! Our campground was not very far from the lake so Daisy’s morning walk was along the shore. Karlstad was an enjoyable town to wander around as it had many parks and paths along by the river and canal that dissected the town. Most of the original town had been destroyed by fire in 1865 but there was still some elegance to the...

Aug 19, 2014 - Heading east and a little north

When we had started our summer trip we were unsure whether we would get to Norway or not this year. Time had just flown by and to do justice to Norway we decided that we would leave it till next year. So instead we would explore the rest of Southern Sweden before heading back to the UK for the end of September Today we started heading east towards Stockholm intending to stop at Karlstad just under halfway to visit Europe’s largest freshwater lake Vȁnern. It was dry when we left Kungshamn but for most of the journey we were in heavy rain....

Jul 4, 2013 - Vibeck

Last day at Vibeck. Good news this morning that Harald can come home. Kajsa to collect him. We ventured off to Boda Borg which is a challenging game house. With respect for my age we restricted ourselves to the mental challenges apart from the Farm challenge and managed to get two stamps on our cards. Louise, David and Daniel will return next week to face the physical challenges without me! I know from experience that I cannot haul myself up through a box equivalent to an enclosed shower cabinet to the floor above! Lunch at a restaurant...

Jul 3, 2013 - Vibeck/Loka

Wednesday and Kajsa started the day with an early morning trip to the hospital where Harald is making some improvement. Hopefully he will be moved into a ward today. Kajsa had arranged a day at Loka, a luxurious spa resort which has had facilities upgraded recently. Collecting towel, robe (and a new swimsuit for me) we enjoyed the new pool now an infinity pool with view to the lake, several bubbling spa pools, two saunas, one steam room and total luxury; even a couple of chandeliers above the pool and many relaxing couches around. Buffet...

Jul 2, 2013 - Vibeck near Karlskoga

We were all anxious about Harald; Kajsa had phoned the hospital early morning - temperature still up and he is still in intensive care. After breakfast we went into Karlskoga to shop; David and I prowled the supermarket looking at the origin of various fruits and vegetables, trying to identify some foods (black sticks later identified by Kajsa as poor man's asparagus) searched for duck legs for David's cooking night and translated prices. Kajsa and Louise then went to the hospital while we did some shopping and looking in the town,...

Jul 1, 2013 - Stockholm to Vibeck (Karlskoga)

Took the train from Stockholm Central to Degafors where Harald met us. Louise was aware that he had spent a couple of days in hospital but now Ok apart from a rash due to allergy from a drug. Had a lovely lunch (of course) and went for a walk to Lunedet. All except Harald meandered along the lake and past the animal farm to the edge of the forest where Harald planned to meet us at the car park before walking in the forest but he did not arrive. Kajsa phoned and he said he didn't feel well so she went home and we followed about an hour later...

Jun 1, 2010 - Helsinki to Karlstad

Today we caught the bus to Karlstad. This was a bit of a random destination we had selected. First, it was on the way to Oslo, we did not want to spend eight hours on a bus, and we wanted to stop at a smaller town. So we arrived in Karlstad around 4:15, about a 4 and a half hour bus ride. Bus was good, with internet on board as usual. After checking a map at the bus station we walked to our hotel a few blocks away. We dropped our bags and headed down to the information centre to collect some maps and info. Karlstad looks quite nice, the...
