May 11, 2013 - Day 3 Malmö City shopping

Well, hello again dear reader, and thanks for making through another day's activities. Poor Rog didn't sleep well last night and thus was awake during the night which made him a little tired later in the day. I slept well surprisingly until just before 6am but I guess I hadn't really slept a lot in the prior 40 odd hours so my body was craving it a bit. I'd been really looking forward to my Scandic breakfast. I find it interesting that sliced meats and salad is a breakfast option here. I was however disappointed to find out that this hotel...

Aug 16, 2012 - Accidental fare evasion

Today we got up shortly after 7:00 am. It’s a little cloudy today, but no rain so far. We had a boiled egg and rundstykker for breakfast with coffee. We walked to Kongen’s Nytorv, past Det Kongelige Teater, past the square which is mostly blocked off, and past the Hotel d’Angleterre, which was shrouded due to renovations and on to the Metro. I didn’t realize for many days that behind all the scaffolding was the Hotel d’Angleterre. I had been wondering where it was and thought perhaps my memory of its location was wrong. We caught the metro...

Jul 28, 2012 - Dresden to Trelleborg, Sweden

Saturday 28/7/12 Dresden to Sassnitz by train, ferry to Trelleborg, Sweden Caught the train at 9.30 from Dresden station. No problems with finding space for the bikes this time. We had to make a train change at a small village, in the first hour, then we had a hot and sticky 4 hr journey in a carriage that had no air conditioning. The conductor advised we get off the train one stop before Sassnitz so that our ride to the ferry would be downhill rather than 7 ks uphill. After getting some groceries and having the worst cup of coffee we rode...

Jul 15, 2012 - Sweden: An unexpected surprise

In the evening, we decided to spend the extra day by driving into Sweden, not just because of the chance to add an extra country to our list but because Riekie and Rob had been to the town of Malmo before and there were two very interesting things to entice us to do the same. One is that there is a Castle there that was built, first as a fortification, in the mid-1400s. Some of the original construction is incorporated in the current building, most of which was constructed in 1542. The other reason is that there is a really long tunnel...

Our Europe Excursion

Apr 28, 2012 - to sweden

Today had been forecast as fine. Over night the forecast changed to rainy, so we went from going on a 1and a 1/2 hour drive to Funen; an island between here and the Danish mainland, where we would have again walked, to a 20+ km drive to Sweden. Of course it didn't rain but now I can say Ive been to Sweden! As far as Malmo, which is just over the bridge. Again you're getting an architectural picture! It isn't the Swedish version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But the spiralling steel frame of this upmarket apartment block certainly makes it...

Europe 2012

Nov 11, 2011 - Malmo preparing for Christmas

It is very different here to see the preparation for Christmas. Not nearly as commercial as our Christmas. The shops and public spaces are decorated with fresh pine leaves, the wreathes are made from fresh pine and other flowers and the shops are not pumping out Christmas carols. Bliss!! We have watched for two days the city workers on cherry pickers putting large present boxes in the trees in the park

Nov 11, 2011 - Around Malmo

Malmo and Copenhagen are connected by the longest bridge in Europe, nearly 8 Kms long. We have crossed it 5 times so far and where lucky enough to have a clear day yesterday when the bridge revealed itself. The other architectural wonder the Swedish are proud of is the Twisted Torso Building which is visible from everywhere. We have seen some wonderful cultural differences. Lots of preschool children in small groups going for a walk with their teachers with yellow safety vests and backpacks... so cute. Smaller ones are pushed on 4 child...

Nov 11, 2011 - Parks and gardens are beautiful

Parks and gardens are beautiful and plentiful, as are the cobbled streets and early buildings. Parks are well looked after, full of sculptures and a great pleasure to walk in. Along the esplanade there is a breakwater the city has placed "black diamonds" with the other stones. The city has sent black stones to china to be polished till they are very shiny. They are then placed along the boardwalk as sculptures

Nov 11, 2011 - Time with friends in Malmo

Wearrived in Malmo expecting terrible weather but found lovely sunny days but 3-6 degrees. So, at last e got out the 6 Kilos of warm clothes we have been carting around the world. We have greatly enjoyed time with Anna and Lennert in Malmo. We where were lucky enough to be taken mushrooming in the forest, followed by a cup of tea and cake. We were not very helpful mushroom hunters as the variety we were looking for hid themselves under dead branches. The forest was great and so different from our bush. We had another great meal with friends...

Aug 26, 2011 - Across to Sweden

We had a great day in Malmo with Anna. Its a very beautiful city and small enough to get around. She lives on the waterfront where the photo is taken which has been developed with lots of very interesting apartments, esplanades, cafes and swimming spaces. Following dinner with Anna and Leonard ( which was very Swedish) we caught a lot bus to the station to go back to Copenhagen and where lucky enough to pass some Malmo festival events with lots of noise, fire and music.
