Mar 21, 2019 - Horton Plains National Park

We departed our hotel at 5:30 AM for the drive to Horton Plains national Park. The proprietor woke up early and packed us a nice breakfast of sandwiches bananas and a candy bar and water of course. The drive took a little over an hour on narrow windy roads. At last we reached the national Park and were not alone. I’m not sure actually how big, but the park is huge. We started off walking through planes with mountains in the background and the river beside us. To our surprise, we noticed the bushes and trees growing all over at the hillside...

May 1, 2018 - Into the highlands

The day started with a visit to the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy. Very impressive gardens over 145 acres - we took a buggy to make sure we got to see it all. Left Kandy and headed higher into the mountains. On the way stopped at another tea plantation and factory. Arrived at Nuwara Eliya late afternoon with time to walk around the town.

Mar 10, 2018 - Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

First up today was a visit to the temple of Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Budha. It is located in the royal palace complex and houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple. We timed our visit to be there during the daily ceremony. Although very crowded with both locals and...

Jan 8, 2017 - Day 8

An easy day for us today, driving from Kandy to Nurawa Eliya. we're in the high country now; nights are cooler and the landscape is dominated by tea plantations. we took a tour of one plantation - it was interesting to see the process & to find that white, green & black teas are from different parts / processes from the one plant and that only the new top leaves are picked. We stayed at Jetwing St Andrews; a lovely old colonial, guesthouse-style hotel.

May 4, 2016 - Knokkende olifanten

May 3, 2016 - Adams Peak

May 2, 2016 - Dagje Nuwara Eliya

May 1, 2016 - Van Kandy naar Nuwara Eliya

Apr 30, 2016 - Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya N.E. is the central town of the highlands with a population of about 25,000. It likes to brand itself more British than England, with cool(ish) weather, tea plantations all around and High Tea on order at the Grand Hotel. We spent 3 days exploring in and around town and hiking in the vicinity (see Horton Plains and Adam's Peak blog entries). First day, the boys and I took out bikes as Faye chilled at our hip guesthouse that sits on St Andrews Road above the golf club. After navigating the town's busy streets as the folk were...

Feb 12, 2016 - Life in the tea foothills

Yesterday we went for a nice hike which I told the Barbaras was all downhill but was actually not. We walked up and out of town then down toward a tea processing plant. After we got tired we took a bus. At first to the wrong place but eventually got to the plant where we joined a bunch of other tourists, mainly Chinese who were buying tons of tea. It turns out that tea processing is not very complicated. I am sure there is an art to each step but there were not a lot of steps. We could see the pickers in the hillside and watch them bring...

Cavorting in Ceylon

Feb 10, 2016 - Train to hill country

What a fun day. I love travelling on trains and rarely get the chance to do so. We boarded at 8 am something after eating a snack and having tea/coffee at the train station canteen. We waiting on the platform of this busy, Victorian seeming station with lines of people going every which way. There's something about three women of a certain age that attracts helpful people, in our case a nice man who not only told us where to stand on the platform but then when the train came found us seats for our unreserved tickets. It's always interesting...

Cavorting in Ceylon

Oct 16, 2015 - English splendour!

Our senses were correct. The walk on Horton Plains was cancelled. It was disappointing, but realistically, better to play the safer option. So basically a rest day here at the Grand Hotel. The strong smell of incense wafts throughout the ground floor, as the Hindi Cultural display sets up. There is loud hindi music coming from the ball room. We had a particularly fresh tasting chicken curry for breakfast. I got a little more creative, building hard boiled egg with curry sauce from the chicken curry pot, chilli coconut sambal, and...
