Apr 25, 2018 - Off to good start

Our first morning was spent by the pool which we had to ourselves . The resort is very nice but very few tourists, lots of staff so we get very well looked after. After lunch our driver took us on a tour of Negombo, a very old town with lots of Dutch and British influences still very evident. The fish market was an eye opener with loads of fish being laid out in the sun for drying. We watched the fishermen unloading their catch for the day whilst fending off the birds which were having a picnic. The auction saw lots of action. Later in the...

Apr 25, 2018 - Arrived safely

It's an awful long way from Phillip Island to Colombo! We started our day early, traveling to Southern Cross from Cowes on the V-Line coach - a very good service and very economical for us seniors. We flew Malaysian Airlines via KL and arrived in Colombo just after midnight. Met by our friendly guide and then met the other four in our group (all our vintage). A nice new mini bus then drove for half an hour to Negombo. Here for two nights in a lovely resort right on the waters edge. So far everything is just perfect and looking forward to...

Mar 6, 2018 - Negombo

We had intended to sleep in and reset the body clocks but we were both awake early so headed down for a long slow breakfast. The hotel is right on the beach, the only things between our room and the beach are the two pools and the bar. After breakfast had a wander along the beach and headed over to the local fish market. Next to the fresh fish market there are thousands of fish laying on the ground getting sun dried. Interestingly the birds are not interested in these fish, guess they just like the fresh ones. On the way back to the hotel...

Dec 29, 2017 - The 46 hour day

Enough with monotony, enough with scraping windshields, enough with 8-4 Monday-Friday, enough with commuting, enough with the familiar, the mundane, and the routine. Time to pack 2 pairs of pants, 3 T-shirts, 1 pair of shorts, 1 skirt, 1 dress, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 long-sleeves, a windbreaker, and a big handful of underwear and hit the road :)! While everyone else was Boxing Day shopping, we were slinging on our backpacks and starting out on our 26 hour journey across 13 time zones towards the sun and surf of Sri Lanka. Our honeymoon...

Mar 2, 2016 - First few days

Well, after 39 hours of flights and layovers (and false promises to stop doing this to myself) I finally landed in Sri Lanka and hit the beach. My first day and a half was great. I had a swim in the Indian Ocean, hit up a street market, and started to make new friends right away. The next day was jam packed full of sights like a local fish market, toddy tappers, and a big Hindu temple. Then we stopped for lunch at a spot that only offered curry buffet. It was pretty much down hill from there for me. I was sick with nausea for the next 2...

Feb 27, 2016 - Leaving Sri Lanka and the long trip back.

Well, today I am back to my usual practice of spending a few hours in the peak heat of the equatorial sun walking about aimlessly. I think that it is a bad sign when the desk clerk asks me "Have you been swimming?" upon laying eyes upon me strolling in through the hotel entrance... On the other hand, today I checked out the fisherman's harbor (another not so great idea in the heat and sun...), as well as a huge outdoor market selling fruits, vegetables, more fish, toys, and lots and lots of colorful polyester fabric. Finally, I enjoyed a...

Cavorting in Ceylon

Oct 7, 2015 - Negombo Day

After an early night, we woke at 3am and the again at 5.30am. Off to our hotel dining room for a Sri Lankan breakfast. A delicious taste of a range of tropical fruits, then Kola Kenda - a green leaf and rice porridge soup. Then a string hopper with yellow dhal and hot chilli sambal. Mark chose a coconut rotty(as spelt on the menu) coconut and curry fish pieces, with chilli. After some research, we decided not to visit the Pinnawala elephant orphanage some 60 kms away. We had read reports that suggested it was not in the best interest of...

Oct 6, 2015 - Off to a new land

Why is it that when you start your trip, you encounter a let down at the very beginning? And that is when you need to be relaxed, but no- our Melbourne taxi driver took us in his cab with fuel light flashing red via Strathmore and Strathmore Heights, and other boonie suburbs, as he got lost ! He missed a detour sign, and there you have it. Our Malaysian airline flight was on time and terrific. Spent. 4 hours kicking around Kuala Lumpur airport waiting for our connection to Sri Lanka. Malaysian airlines delighted us with a typical lemak...

Sep 24, 2015 - Dear Ann

It feels like a lifetime has past since we last saw your beautiful face and my gosh do we miss our catch-ups! Always the same, but never boring - good food and wine or brunches with endless cups of coffee that go on for hours and always end too soon. So much of that last catch-up was around our trip. You had so many questions. Where will you go? What will you see? When will you be in Sri Lanka? India? What will you see/do there? Our answers were always the same and more than a little vague. We just didn’t know. We had a rough (it was...

May 7, 2015 - Colombo to Negombo

Of course. Started the day with a hearty breakfast & a couple lattes☕️☕️! Then we walked around some different areas of Colombo, including the Majestic Shopping Mall- many levels of wide variety of shops. Because it was already so hot ( 9am ) we took a route where we could mostly keep to the shaded side or streets. Most shops here don't open till 10:00 usually, so we had time to amble along & take in the sights ie peering into little alleys/laneways, stop & talk with the locals including police , stall holders. Many of them put out their...

Jan 17, 2014 - The journey home

Once in the airport, we checked in with little delay and were thrilled to find that we could again get our luggage checked through to Melbourne. We wandered the airport for a couple of hours, trying to spend our last rupees, but nobody wanted them, including the Duty Free stores, which did not thrill us. We boarded our Sri Lankan Airlines flight at about 12.30 am. The 3 1/2 hour flight was uneventfull but the crew were the most unfriendly we've ever come across, even snatching items out of passengers' hands. Arrived in Kuala Lumpur at...

Dec 31, 2013 - Negombo to Anuradhapura

There are definitely downfalls in having a hotel room facing on to the hotel's work area! At about 4am, after having slept soundly for about 5 hours, we were very rudely awakened! It sounded like all the male employees were having a very noisy party! What it actually was was part of the New Year's preparations for the hotel. They had erected tents on the beach and had very elaborate table settings etc. but obviously decided they needed more tables. The noise was a truck arriving and then being unloaded of tables and bits of metal that kept...
