Mar 14, 2018 - Tissamaharama to Mirissa

Quiet travel day today. Not a lot to report, just observing everyday Sri Lankan life. Some of the towns on the coast seem to have a lot of tourists. All the beaches seem pretty good. Was happy to find our hotel is not right in town, but up on a hill. Each room is a separate building and a good distance from each other so it is nice and peaceful.

Although we were all awake at around 6am, we were very glad we had postponed the whale watching until tomorrow, as the 3 sickies were definitely not feeling like their normal selves at all. Rob & Marilyn were up fairly early, although breakfast was not enjoyed as heartily as previously. Chris & Kevin had had quite a disturbed night but both were feeling a lot better than the previous night. Both couples had problems with their breakfast orders. It was American breakfast today - not the buffet we have had virtually everywhere else. The...

Sri Lanka 2014

Aug 7, 2012 - Sri Lanka - Days 20 & 21 - Beach Days

Our new room has turned out to be amazing. No neighbors yet either, there are only three units in this new complex but we like the peace and quiet. It's such a treat to be in a brand new room, new bed, new mattress, new shower, new toilet, new everything - it's great. We do however, have a stray dog that comes behind our room at night, knocking over the garbage cans and making a hell of a racket and mess. I would hate to be the one who has to clean it up every morning, for one dog, she makes the most of her time and doesn't miss a scrap. We...

Aug 5, 2012 - Sri Lanka - Day 19 - Arugam Bay to Mirissa

Early bus ride to Mirissa, tuk-tuk driver picked us up at 6:30am to take us to the closest bus station in Pottuvil, approximately 5 minutes away. The bus we boarded didn’t leave until 7:30am so we had a little time to pick up some breakfast, I stayed with the bags while Jason searched the streets for a vendor. As luck would have it, he found one with fresh vegetable samosas, and other various deep fried goodies. We had to travel Matara where we needed to board another bus bound for Mirissa, beautiful little sea side town where the main bus...

May 24, 2011 - Cure de plages

Only an hour S of Unawatuna...we took some time to tour the fort in Unawatuna. When we got off the bus it was just .5 km to the entry of Ocean Moon Guest house, very nicely situated on the beach, friendly folks - we choose the more expensive cabana which has more light & ocean breezes(1700 r. = $8.50 US each). A bit of a splurge but w/ 3 days and such a beautiful setting we couldn't resist. I immed went swimming, met Andy(wife Lucy & dau. 3 & 4 yrs old) from Oxford UK - owns an organic produce business - subscription type where people sign...

Aug 30, 2008 - Blog from Hikkaduwa

Traveled quite a long way since the last blog. Not much in the way of internet access out East, so major blog time now that we're back on the South coast for our final stint of work in Sri Lanka. OK, so last blog it was Friday and we said that we were going for a snazzy 5 course meal in the evening. It was brilliant. So much fun! Soph and I felt all snazzy in our dresses and the boys looked very smart in the shirts and trousers. Went up to the Hill Club and had to sign in as temporary members. Then the boys went to select their jackets -...

Mar 22, 2008 - Marvellous Mirissa

As there did not seem to be any sign of an end to the rain, I headed for the south coast. Surely, I would find some sun there? I hadn’t seen any since the day I had arrived. Five hours, two bus changes and a tuk-tuk ride [photo1] after leaving Ella, I stepped onto the beautifully-crescented, sandy beach of Mirissa [photo2]. It had been an uneventful ride with some sensible driving until we descended onto the straighter roads of the coast when the driver of one of the buses decided that he was Michael Schumacher. This caused one lady to...
