At 6 a.m. the following morning, we set out for Sri Lanka's remote eastern coast. We traveled along dirt tracks and even bumpier roads to reach our final destination, Kalmunai. The only description we had of Kalmunai was from our Guidebook and that was hardly impassioned ... "the only reason tourists might stop in Kalmunai is to change buses on the way between Batticaloa and Ampara"! Kalmunai is a small fishing village that was devastated by the Tsunami in 2004. The waves, over 12 metres high, overwhelmed the town and the fragile houses...

Sri Lankans say that in the days following the tsunami there was no such thing as Sinhalese or Tamil or Muslim. With hundreds of thousands of people forced out of their homes, sanctuary was given in temples of all faiths to people of all faiths, without thinking twice about traditional divides.
