Jun 17, 2017 - Moors and Christians

One of the Spanish festivals that Paul and I have never witnessed is that of the 'Moors and Christians'. All the months we have spent in Spain in recent years and we've never been here at the right time. Well this year it was the right time. The festival was held on the beach in the beautiful town of Moraira. First, here is a little background history on the 'Moors and Christians'. The Moors are a mixture of peoples from North Africa. They invaded the Iberian Peninsula (now known as Spain and Portugal) in 711AD and within a few years ruled...

Feb 15, 2014 - A day at Denia Marina

Hi Everyone We have been watching the news reports from the UK with growing concern. The terrible rains and high winds are not letting up as day after day the country gets bombarded by this terrible weather. We do hope that all our friends and family in the UK are ok and coping with this horrendous deluge. Our nephew, Richard, is marrying his lovely Karen today (15th) so we hope there will be a break in the weather so as not to spoil their special day. Talking of the weather, one afternoon last week a sea fret (sea fog) blanked out...

Jan 8, 2014 - Dénia

Lynn and Russ had invited us to dinner on New Year’s Eve, and made a delicious paella and tortilla. Unfortunately Russ was not well, so Lynn brought dinner over to us and the three of us enjoyed it washed down with cava. Lynn returned to keep Russ and Jack company later in the evening so it was just the two of us to see the New Year in (the quietest New Year we’ve ever had I think!) As a matter of interest I’ve just seen Spanish cava (bubbles) on special on Grab One for NZ$53 for 6 bottles – we paid €1.79 a bottle! We’ve had some changeable...

Dec 25, 2013 - Our Christmas Day

Christmas Day was a grey one here in Dénia. We had rain first thing and though that cleared, the wind got stronger and there was quite a storm Christmas night. We had our Christmas dinner in Homer with Russ and Lynn. Turkey breast with roast potatoes, mash, green beans and cauliflower/broccoli in cheese sauce. This was followed by bread and butter pudding that Russ had made – yummy. And of course chocolates and wine, both sparkling and still.

Dec 16, 2013 - Playa Les Deveses in Dénia

We have settled in at Camping Los Llanos at Playa Deveses in Dénia and are back into our relaxed routine of rising mid-morning, having brunch then usually going for a walk somewhere. There is a lovely long sandy beach nearby and it’s a 20 minute walk to a supermarket. We checked out the local market on Saturday and yesterday David rode the 14kms round trip to check out Oliva Golf course. He decided it’s too expensive to play there at €90 a round. Today Lynn, David and I took the half-hour bus ride into Dénia (€1.50 each one way). We found...

Dec 9, 2013 - Sagunto to Dénia (and Alexis is born!)

Our granddaughter, Alexis was born at 4am on this day New Zealand time. We were kept in the loop via Facebook chat – and we had the news about 15mins after the event! Isn’t technology wonderful? This morning we left about 11am and drove south to Dénia, paying a toll of €8.90, and stopped at the Lidl supermarket in town before finding our way to Camping Los Llanos (N 38°52'05" W 0°00'56").

Jul 9, 2007 - Dénia, Xábia/Jávea, and Moraira

A bit of a mixed bag today. I decided to head out to the smaller towns that various people have recommended to me, none of which get much of a write up, if any, in the Lonely Planet. They look like they're quite far apart but it's actually only 10kms or so between each! After a gorgeous drive up the coast I stopped in Xábia first (also spelt Jávea) to ensure I got a town map before the Tourist Office closed. I found the way out of town to Dénia on the map, but road closures gave me a bit of grief! From Xábia it's a drive up and over the...

May 28, 2005 - The much talked about Paella Valencia?!!

The little beach town of Oliva was used as our sleeping base for the night before heading to Valencia for that much talked about plate of paella! Valencia all in all was a little disappointing, was pretty enough for a Spanish city, but that plate of paella let us both down miserably! We struggled to find the port for a bite to eat, not so surprising based on current Spanish signposting experience..... Decided in the end to hit the cruise button on the little 'El Torre' and made our way up to Barcelona, another biggish drive, with most of...
