Oct 25, 2010 - Alicante

We decide to change our itinerary and bypass Valencia and spend an extra day in Barcelona. As well, we will try and stay about thirty minutes away from Barcelona and take the train instead of fighting Spanish traffic. So we say goodbye to enchanting Nerja and head to Alicante for the night. As the coastal road is not a freeway, our GPS routes us inland and we find ourselves in an incredible mountain range. It’s so unexpected passing through huge valley’s with high mountains on either side of us. It really is quite beautiful: the ruggedness,...

Jun 19, 2010 - A Slight Glitch in our travel journal

This may be one of the last posts in our travel journal. Herb's Dell laptop may finally (after 5 years) have given up the ghost! Judy has not yet accepted responsibility for taking control of the updating of the journal, but she is under great pressure to do so. On Wednesday, we traveled to Guadalest to visit the Eagles Nest. We would send pictures but they are on the Dell which will no longer boot up Sam & Herb played Campoamor Golf Course on Thursday and other than the sand traps (very strange) they had a wonderful time. Friday was beach...

Oct 9, 2009 - To Our Spanish Home

We were up early for our 625km run from Lloret de Mar, bound for El Campello, near Alicante. We spent the first little bit on the Autovia, then got off and rode the secondary roads near the coast. We love Spain already. Hot, dry, and beautiful. We did want to get off the road by early afternoon due to the heat. We found a great little backpackers in El Campello, and armed with our new Spanish dictionary, prepared to check-in. We didn’t get too far. The guy didn’t know a word in English, and it turns out that my rusty Spanish was in fact...

Sep 30, 2009 - Alicante

Leisurely morning and disembarked after lunch. We walked to the tunnel that digs deep into Monte Benacantil. One rather long tunnel that led to an elevator that climbed through the bowels of the mountain - we quickly zoomed the 166 metres to the top. From the summit we could see the entire bay of Alicante and surrounding areas. We explored the Castle Santa Barbara - a fortress dating from the late 9th century, the time of Moorish rule. Back down in the elevator and a walk through Alicante's palm lined boulevards and squares. Back on board...

Where is Shirley?

Aug 9, 2009 - Alicante, Spain

The least pretty city we've visited, and with little of historic interest except a massive fort, Alicante served its intended purpose - a place for us to park. There was laundry to be done, a web site to be updated, and the need to just sit by the pool and read. We did all that. The laundry was the biggest challenge as we were told at the tourist info centre that laundromats did not exist in Spain! A web search located one at the marina, so off we went on our quest. As one would expect, the marina facility was intended for people with boats...

Alicante was awesome. . . we spent most of our time there wondering around the beaches. We met this couple from brazil that were living there, working, and playing. They were super nice, and had us over every night for drinks and showed us around the city. We were happy to meet some people and talk to someone else besides ourselves for a change. . . We were sad to leave them, but hopefully they will come to Cali and we can take them surfing . . . that is how we met. Saw him reading a surf mag. . . off to Barcelona!!!

POOH & LIZ IN EUROPE

Jul 12, 2007 - Alicante

This morning we got up and had another good breakfast. Jaycee woke up and was quite sick with a cold. She didn't have a very good sleep. But on the other hand Jason woke up feeling great and had an awesome sleep. Whenever she's sick she wishes she's back in Saskatchewan so her mommy could take care of her like old times. (I MISS YOU MOMMY!) We love it when our hostels have free breakfast and when they are good it's even better! We may have been sitting bedside the Australian girls for breakfast too. There were 5 of them in our old room and...

Apr 22, 2007 - Valencia, Spain

We woke up to cloudy, grey skies and rain and thunder. The city looks beautiful but this isn't the best weather for site seeing. After a hotel breakfast, we took a cab to a indoor mall...what??? you say....well, Greg still hasn't received his one bag which has the majority of his clothes in it....so off we went to shop for some basics for Greg. We find the prices very reasonable and again, the people are very nice. After shopping, we took a cab into city center. We decided to take a walking tour....then realizing we had left the umbrella at...

Mediterranean Cruise

Jul 20, 2006 - Alicante

After leaving Seville, we had a quick stopover in Motril, Costa Del Sol, but ultimately we headed for Alicante, a great spot on the Costa Blanca. We started the day by getting the lift up through the mountain to the Castillo de Santa Barbara, a 16th century fortress with excellent views over the city. With the 'touristy' thing out of the way, we headed straight to the beach. We were a little bit bewildered when we got there, it seemed to be pensioners day out?! Hundreds of grandparent-aged people covering the beach and even worse, many...

Dec 23, 2005 - Hola from Espania

We are in Spain now and have been for a week and a half. Steve has been ill for all that time with a stomach bug. We went to the doctor yesterday and he diagnosed bacterial enteritis and prescribed antibiotics. So we'll have to see if this works, though he is better than a week ago. I have been on my new get-healthy regime, with a heart healthy diet and an attempt to shed a bit of weight. I am also doing quite a bit of walking...mainly to the shops to get something for the invalid... When I went to the docs in the week I was back, he...

Jul 15, 2005 - Alicante, Spain

Soon after Rachael arrived, we all got on a train out of Madrid to a little coastal city called Alicante. It is only about four hours away and is very quaint. on the Mediterranean Sea. The ocean is beautiful blue and green and so clear--and so warm! After enjoying our hotel in Tudela so much, we decided to book the same brand in Alicante, but of course our luck ran out...it was actually about 40 miles outside of Alicante in the mountains, so the cab driver took us to a new hotel, which was nice but still a bit outside of the city. But we...

Back at home.

Sep 23, 2004 - Isle have a piece of that!!!

Well we made it to a city bustling with people and lots of accommodation available. We decided to spend three nights here and enjoy the sunshine and beach and the bustle of the city. It is a great place! We went to an island called Tabarca the one day, which was wicked! we bought ourselves some snorkeling kit and hit the reefs...it was heaps of fun. The fish and coral weren´t that colourful, but the water was beautiful and there was plenty to see. We did get a bit crispy though!! The great thing about it was that although the island is...
