Jan 22, 2016 - Sea, Sea and more sea

After a late night at the ball we emerged at 9am to a view of …..you have guessed..... more sea as far as the eyes can see. It really makes you appreciate the vastness of the oceans when you have been travelling for 7 days with only the sea around you and make you think how on earth we are managing to remove so much life from them and cause so many problems of pollution of the oceans.

Jan 21, 2016 - Sailing past St Helena...some land at last!

It has been much cooler today but still very pleasant. This afternoon we sailed past St Helena and had a talk on its history and flora and fauna from the bridge as we slowly cruised past. It is a very mountainous small island in the middle of nowhere but is home for a few thousand people. Goodness knows how they support themselves but it made a change from seeing sea all the time and there were a few dolphin and gannet around too. After cruising past the island we changed direction to south-east towards Walvis Bay ,Namibia and we saw are...

Jan 20, 2016 - Enjoying time at sea

The weather has been surprisingly pleasant (26C today) even though we have just crossed the equator and doldrums area probably because of the hazy sky and strong breeze. The sea and cruise ship has been reasonably calm in spite of the strong breeze and the swimming pool having quite a swell at times. We have not seen any more whale or dolphin although there were some about but we have seen many shoals of flying fish trying to escape from the bow wave of the ship. The lectures have not been quite so interesting the past 2 days so we have...

Jan 19, 2016 - 4th day at sea- crossing the equator

The weather is very muggy and we had some rain yesterday so it reminded me of December at home but 25degreesC warmer with all the cloud about! There is a breeze so it makes walking around the deck much more pleasant than in the searing sunshine. This morning we crossed the equator and there will be the usual on board ceremony for this this afternoon called the polliwogs and shellbacks which is a swimming pool dunking session for the polliwogs (those who have not crossed the equator at sea before) by King Neptune which can be quite...

Jan 18, 2016 - 3rd day at sea after the starlight Ball

We are having a lazy day after a late night at the Starlight Ball sitting on our balcony in hazy sunshine and watching the sea go past. We are travelling at 37km/hr and have just past the “bulge” of Africa quite close to Sierra Leon 2800 miles from Namibia which is why it will take another 5 days to get there! Our lazy day has been quite productive as we have used the free laundrette. There are 3 washers and 3 driers on each of the 4 main “balcony decks” with free washing powder packets but they are very busy as you can imagine with about...

Jan 17, 2016 - Settling into life at sea

We have 8 days at sea between Gran Canaria and Namibia and are travelling down the coast of Africa being about 26 mile from the coast at one time. On the first day there were a lot of birds around, mainly gannet and different types of skua, mostly around fishing vessels. We also saw some dolphin and a small whale cruising past blowing and one dive so it is always interesting what you are going to see on a walk round the deck. A typical day starts with a leisurely breakfast and a few exercises and stretches either on the floor of our cabin...

Jan 15, 2016 - Our second port Las Palmas in Gran Canaria

Arrived in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria 8am to perfect weather. The sky had a hint of rose in the clouds and there was little breeze. After breakfast we walked to see if we could hire some bikes for the day but when we arrived the shop was not open until 11am so we crossed the few city streets of the narrow isthmus of Las Palmas to the beach on the northern side for a walk. The sea looked very inviting for a swim but we had not brought our costumes but the stroll along the beach was very pleasant. Back At the shop at 11am we managed to hire 2...

Dec 18, 2007 - Las Palmas, Spain

Well here I am in Spain once again, but this time in a lovely spot on the Grand Canary Island. Its very touristy and does not at all feel like Spain. There is a lovely beach where we have been able to take advantage of surfing, snorkelling or just sitting and relaxing. We did an 5 hour hike through the mountains on the second day here and it was great. The scenery was amazing. We started in one little village, walked up the mountain side, back down the ravine, into the river bed and through huge areas of bamboo. Along on the trek was a...
