May 20, 2005 - Portugal & Spain

Although John and I were a little sad to be leaving South America, we are excited to be on the second leg of our grand adventure. The flight from Lima to Madrid was long, but good. Hmmm...the Iberia flight attendent uniforms were quite the fashion statement. The women wore yellow and brown striped aprons while the men doned blazers of the same fabric. And I thought that the green and white serving uniform I wore that the Sheraton was bad! Our time in Madrid was relaxing. We stayed in a hostal, which is basically a buget hotel, for four...

May 9, 2005 - Spain -- Madrid

Day 36 - Mon May 9 Madrid (Chris) Adios Toledo, hello Madrid. We grabbed a bus back up North and then used the metro to get to our hotel. We've taken the metro extensively in every country we've been in with no end in sight. They're really quite handy. Our first real day in Madrid was pleasant and relaxed. We found the very prominent store chain El Corte Ingles ('The English Court' I think), which is like the Bon Marche (er, Bon Macy's) on top, with a QFC in the basement. So grocery shopping we went and had a nice picnic in a park. The main...

May 8, 2005 - Disaster hits..................

Day one, 8 May: Trouble We tried to start Pikey this morning but at first she would not start..... and then she finally spluttered to life but with a wheezing cough and her brakes not working! Not right! So we decided with all the amount of water we have had to feed her on the trip and now this we would have call the roadside assistance. A very helpfull guy informed us it would be better to wait until Monday to make the call as most things would be closed today (a fairly sound piece of advice!) Decided to hit Madrid to pass the time! Found...

May 7, 2005 - Moving into Madrid

Well, got to Madrid at about noon, as as expected with Spanish cities, took 3 hours to find the campsite!! We'd done a bit a homework on campsites in Bibao after we found it so difficult to find a site and thought we had done enough.... but the Spanish managed to keep us on our toes!! Ended up at a campsite about 30 mins south of Madrid by bus and on the Metro, was nicely situated. As we found out later, we were actually staying on top of the most central point of Spain! We went into Madrid that day and did a bit of internet and walking...

May 2, 2005 - Dublin to Madrid

After lots of hugs and kisses we said goodbyes to the kids and Annette drove us to the Airport. Had something to eat at the airport and then caught our flight to Madrid. About 2 and a half hour flight. Caught the metro into the city and found our hostel. Checked in and went for a walk to find some dinner. It is still light here at 9 pm.

Apr 23, 2005 - Madrid, Spain

From the train station, we headed straight to Josh Michelle's (A Davisite) apartment in Madrid, who was kind enough to house us during our stay here. Our first night was also Passover, so we tried running over to the local synagogue for some information but to no avail- it was closed. We returned later but found out that there was no room that night for the seder. So we ran to a huge market here and picked up the necessary groceries for a seder. Normally our wonderful Jewish moms plan and prepare this meal within a span of days. We spent 20...

Apr 9, 2005 - Madrid

What do I have to say about Madrid??? I was pretty cool. The buildings are beautiful...The people are mean, and the language barrier is killing me. All I have to say is that I am glad to be going to Egypt today. I guess it's because Madrid was not the focus of this trip and Egypt is. Anyways...The first couple of days I got here I was jet laged. I tried my hardest to stay awake all day the first day and I just couldn''t do it. So I had a wee nap. And that nap did not stop me from going to bed at 9pm that night either. Then I slept until 2pm...

Mar 23, 2005 - Madrid: Philsophizing...

Arrived today to Madrid after a wonderfully restful stay in Valladolid. Madrid did not really impress me the first time around, but this trip showed the value of looking at a place a second time. We got a hostel near puerta del Sol with some friends of Greg who were visiting Madrid as well. After realizing that their company was not something we wanted to indulge ourselves with (His friend was SOOO annoying I wanted to just get up and leave dinner) we realized that we had a lot of time with ourselves and not a clue what to do with it, so we...

Mar 21, 2005 - Diving deeper in Madrid.

Hey yall... Here I am in Madrid once again taking a "break" from my jaunts and giving my mom and Jerry some privacy as I suppose they couldn't "make out" with me tagging along every minutes especially when I am sleeping in the same room with them. Heh! I sure hope they will make good use of my absence cause I'm gonna be in their face for another 4 or 5 weeks once I meet them tomorrow in Barcelona. "What about Butch", yall may wonder and I can only tell u that I have a big grin on my face like a Cheshire cat that will last for weeks! ;-) It...

Mar 19, 2005 - Madrid

Hola We arrived in Madrid after a nice flight from Quito (the plane was full so they upgraded us to Business Class). We are suffering a bit of jet lag at the moment and hope to feel better by the time we reach Vienna. We have been pleasantly surprised by Madrid, there are a few nice palaces etc and the streetscapes are quite pleasant. The places we visited had amazing art (the Prado has over 150 paintings by Goya, Rubens and Van Dyck alone), the Palazzio Real has a collection of 5 Stradivarius violins and cellos. The only downside is that...

We are in Madrid now, and I am finally caught up with journal entries. They aren't very detailed, but at least you all can see where we've been. We are spending the next 2 days here, and then going up to Paris. I have not seen anything in Madrid yet, so I have no details, but I promise (like before) that I will write some down when I leave here. I hope you all are well, and I can't wait to see you. Let us know how you are. We miss you all tons, and we love hearing from you. Talk to you soon. Love, Abby and Melissa Today's actual entry: We...

Mar 9, 2005 - Madrid...

After our disaster in Malaga we headed to Madrid to salvage some cultural sights. We took a long train ride to Madrid, which at points in the Central plateau of SPain could definitly have been somewhere in the southwest of America. We arrived in the evening found a hostel and rested before heading out. I must say however, that after all the stress of our travelling we broke down and indulged our American desires and got a couple hamburgers from Burger King. Tommy ran down and got it while I took a shower and he said he got four of their...
