Para cenar, comimos also ligero - unos sándwiches. Tenía mucho sueño y...

Madrid 2018

Apr 13, 2018 - ¡Voy a Madrid!

Madrid 2018

Mar 24, 2018 - Arrived safely in Madrid

Arrived safely and on time in Madrid. Exhausted!! Friday was 30+ hours long. Madrid airport is massive, 4 terminals at the airport - made our way from 1 to 4. Awaiting afternoon flight to Granada. Enjoyed our first Spanish meal - lunch (almuerzo) but not yet midday! Picked up by Omar at Granada and driven 1.5 hours to Berchules. WOW! WOW! WOW! The Sierra Nevada national park was incredibly scenic. We drove through the mountains on windy roads. A few snow capped mountains, dotted with white pueblos (villages) and strangely sparse,...

Jan 3, 2018 - Nautical adventures in the capital of Spanish tension

We left Ronda with a vow to one day return, preferably with our own bikes for more biking adventures and got the 10.09am train to Madrid. The train arrived at Madrid Atocha at 14.09 where we wandered to our airbnb. After four nights in a pension it was nice to be back in an apartment where we could do some home cooking and relax on a sofa. The airbnb was twenty five minutes walk from the Atocha station in a regular Spanish surburb with regular spanish food shops, bakeries and a Dominios which after a day's train travel we decided to use...

Sep 22, 2017 - Madrid, Spain

Madrid: Located in the middle of Spain, Madrid is also close to the center of the Iberian Peninsula. If you’re like me, you may have difficulty conceiving of a peninsula bigger than the mitten of Michigan or the fingers of Florida. Confusing the matter even further, there are peninsulas within peninsulas. Florida contains many of these. Well, it turns out that countries can be peninsulas too. Portugal, Spain and part of France make up the Iberian Peninsula. Iberian was a term used by 6th Century BC Romans and Greeks to refer to the people...

Jul 17, 2017 - Hop on Hop off

Alice wanted to sleep in today so we didn’t get up until a bit after 9:00. Got dressed and went to a small café for tea and a bun. Then we went to a news stand and bought “Hop On Hop Off” tickets for the bus that drives all over the city with a recorded tour. You get to see a lot but most of the commentary is about architecture. In any event we travelled all over town. Quite a complex city and a great variety of styles of buildings. Most was fairly modern as a lot was destroyed in the war. Monuments to many people – and even streets and...

Jul 16, 2017 - Madrid and Picasso

Up at 7:00 and get dressed and packed and go to lobby and get a cab. Quick trip to the airport then check in and board all very quickly and efficiently. Flight even 15 minutes early, but we had to wait awhile for the bags. Then a taxi to downtown Madrid to our hotel. The room was ready so we checked right in. Alice was a bit tired so she stayed in the hotel and I went out exploring. First I went to the art museum near the hotel (Reina Sofia) but the guard told me to come back in an hour as it would be free then. Then I decided to go to the...

May 4, 2017 - Madrid

Today was a late start and a ride around Madrid to see a few sights followed by a visit to the Prado Museum. The tour in the museum was very interesting with a real expert all about 16th 17th and 18th centipury artists from Spain. Tonight we have our Farewell dinner and tomorrow we return home. As I think about the trip one of the first things which stands out, but that we could not photograph well, are the parks and green areas. Every town and city, large and small had numerous parks for the people. At first when we saw so many apartments...

May 3, 2017 - Córdoba to Toledo to Madrid

On the way to Toledo we drive through the La Manch region. Well know for its wine and saffron. For lunch we stopped at a village in La Mancha with a very special 16th century inn. The Village is painted white with blue paint around the windos, doors and foundations. It is their superstition that flies do not like blue and therefore will not come into the buildings. Makes for very attractive setting I think. The village has numerous Moorish windmills on the hillsides. Then it is on to Toledo. Toledo is the site of Napolian's first defeat by...

Apr 21, 2017 - Arrival in Madrid

Uneventful flight, watched several movies; I can never sleep on planes. But plane was late taking off, therefore, 30 minutes late arriving, luggage took forever, so we missed our shuttle to the hotel by 5 minutes. We are happily (??) waiting for the next one!!!

Aug 21, 2016 - August 2-14: Cris, Claire, Jordan and Katelyn

Mike and I have been enjoying revisiting some favorite spots: the Prado Museum, the Caixa Forum, and taking walks around this wonderful city. It is clearly a city on vacation because many cafés, restaurants, and small shops have closed for the month of August. It’s quieter here, and plenty warm! Cris and Claire, Jordan and Katelyn arrived on August 5th around 4:30 pm. Jordan spent lots of time visiting our house when he and my sons were young boys. Mike and I were delighted to attend his and Katelyn's wedding in St. Thomas almost two years...
