11 April – Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada It’s another gloomy day on the Camino with only occasional sun and a smattering of rain with occasional gusty cold wind. I can see snow on the mountains in the distance. But today’s walk was lovely on soft trails. I’ve been walking, from time to time, with a woman from San Francisco. Yesterday we stayed at the same hotel and we somehow switched walking sticks. Her poles are about 5 cms longer than mine. I immediately knew this morning that I had the wrong poles. Apr 10, 2014 - Santo Domingo de Calzado

Today we hiked around 21 kilometers. The route was lovely mostly along secondary gravel roads. It was a hot day the whole way with the sun beating down on us. Most of the route was through vineyards with little shade but in the distance, beautiful snowcapped mountains helped one feel cool. Along the way we came across a village I remember from my last Camino, which we called “the village of the dead”. The village is Ciruena. The Hen and the Rooster Miracle Legend tells of a German Pilgrim called Hugonell who was walking to Santiago with his parents, when they decided to rest at an inn in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The owner of the inn’s daughter immediately fell in love with the son, however her feelings were not reciprocated, so the girl, angered, place a silver cup in his luggage and accused the boy of theft.
