Nov 14, 2018 - Alfaro

We left Cuenca in a near perfect Autumn day and headed for the 'Enchanted City', an amazing array of rock formations in the nearby National Park. A three kilometre walk through the natural formations was fun and we were fortunate to have had the weather for it. The continuing drive took us through a really interesting ancient town amongst the hills where nibbles and vino were the order of the day. Albarracin was almost all terracotta in colour and sat on a hillside overlooking a fast flowing stream. Although a little fresh we found a nice...

Apr 9, 2018 - Navarrete to Azofra

Day 8 - El Camino (week 2) Maximum elevation = 669m, minimum elevation = 485m. Forecast 3-6 degrees! Vineyards, olive groves, blah, blah, blah! Not too bad an early morning walk until the rain started. Then, cold and wet :(( Najera was at the 15km mark. When I saw the 500m to bar sign I was so excited, maybe I could run. No! Not with a pack. Stripped off the wet stuff, ate some yummy Spanish food and drank warm drinks - all forgotten. Extra pair of socks and an extra jacket and back out into the dismal weather. It was 4 degrees when we...

Sep 3, 2016 - Azofra to

Waking at 450, I quickly realize that this is the first night on this journey that I have slept all the way thru the night! Most nights, I am up, 3, 4, even 5 times per night, for the entire trip. I don't feel tired in the mornings, but I am sure that I am not repairing my body as I should be. Reminiscent of my cycle ride across Canada last year, when I had to bail out of riding one day because I was just physically exhausted. That day, I ended up riding in the truck and while our driver was picking up provisions, for the group, I was at a...

Walking with Dad

May 18, 2015 - Nàjera - Grañon

30,5km 8h Laura.

May 16, 2015 - Los Arcos - Logrono

Jan 14, 2015 - Resting

My most recent walk was from Estella to Los Arcos. Rolling hills, distant views of peaks and cliffs, and lush green fields of what could be winter wheat that make it feel like a cold May. Walking was mostly comfortable. After a stop of any length, it'd take several painful steps for my ailments to settle in and just about disappear. I managed to treat my blisters for mostly pain-free steps. My motivation was that I had been told in Estella that there was no clinic and that I needed to go to Los Arcos. When I entered Los Arcos, a services...

Apr 10, 2014 - The Miracle of the Hen and the Rooster

The Hen and the Rooster Miracle Legend tells of a German Pilgrim called Hugonell who was walking to Santiago with his parents, when they decided to rest at an inn in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The owner of the inn’s daughter immediately fell in love with the son, however her feelings were not reciprocated, so the girl, angered, place a silver cup in his luggage and accused the boy of theft. Thieves at that time were punished by hanging, and this was the fate of Hugonell. His parents, saddened by his death continued the pilgrimage and...

Apr 10, 2014 - Santo Domingo de Calzado

Today we hiked around 21 kilometers. The route was lovely mostly along secondary gravel roads. It was a hot day the whole way with the sun beating down on us. Most of the route was through vineyards with little shade but in the distance, beautiful snowcapped mountains helped one feel cool. Along the way we came across a village I remember from my last Camino, which we called “the village of the dead”. The village is Ciruena. Located next to a golf course with a lovely clubhouse which invites pilgrims in to dine, some developer has put up...

Apr 9, 2014 - Logrono to Najera

Easy walking for two days from Logrono to Navarette and then the second day from Navarette to Najera. Eating and drinking along the way. Cooler days - but today heated up in the afternoon once we reached Najera so we walked along the riverside and I was able to take photos of a fisherman for my brother, Tommy. Both days were around 15 kms so we arrived early to start drinking and eating. Learned not to order vino tinto. Instead order vino tinto crianza. Meaning "Any DO or DOC red wine that has been aged a minimum of 24 months, with six...

Apr 9, 2014 - Najera 2

The last 3 kms into Najera is pretty ugly - walking through an industrial area. The one saving grace is this graffiti poem written on the side of a concrete wall in the ugly area. The translation of this poem is as follows: Dust, mud, sun and rain, is the Way of Saint James; thousands of pilgrims and more than a thousand years. Pilgrim, who calls you? What dark force brings you here? It's not the Way of the Stars, nor the grand cathedrals. Neither is it the courage of Navarra, or the wine of the people of La Rioja. It's not the...
