Dec 24, 2010 - Just Another Cold Day in Paradise

Today started out as a peaceful morning in a still very cold Mallorca. Today the temperature read around 38 degrees when we woke up. The town that we are staying at in of Soller is an amazing place to wake up in even does mean a day of colder climbing would be ahead of us. We had breakfast downstairs and then decided to take at least take a drive over to one of the climbing spots and just see if it was in the sun and or out of the wind. We take the twists and the turns over to the town of Velldemossa and then from there we get to the...

Dec 23, 2010 - Lazy Days of Winter

So this, dedicated readers, will be the easiest assignment you have had yet to date. For the last two days we have done a whole bunch of nothing and loved every minute of it! Yesterday we had a nice breakfast followed by a nap for me and blog updating for Shawana. From there in the early afternoon we drove into the Port de Soller to do some laundry. We found a Lavenderia as they are called but could only get one token out of the machine before it read out of order. That lead to a walk around the port, a quick snack at big old Burger King...

Dec 21, 2010 - On the Road Again...

After our amazing drive up to and around Soller, we decided to make this our new home for a few days over X-mas. We left Palma early on the 21st after a long night of not a lot of sleep for Shawana. Our neighbors were a little more rowdy than they had been before so we decided to move a day or two earlier than thought. Instead of taking the same road that we took up last time, we decided to circle around the west coast of the island and check out a couple of different spots along the way. The first place we stopped was Sant Elm which is...

Dec 19, 2010 - Mountain Road Madness

There is one thing that we haven't really addressed thus far that we REALLY need to tell you about – driving in Mallorca. I know we told you that I got lost "going around the block" on the first night but we never really elaborated on why it is so easy to get lost or talked about the other driving related mishaps that have become a part of our daily existence on this trip. How can I describe the road system so that you can get a true idea of what it is like here? First, as Paul mentioned there are no road signs. No street signs, barely any...

The Great Adventure

Dec 18, 2010 - Everything is better when you have your own underwear and other little things that completely change the dynamic of your trip.

Yes, everything is better when you have your own underwear. I can attest to this because taa daaah – my bag actually arrived yesterday!! And yes, everything was intact including my skivvies and more importantly our video camera. And yes, we also know it is not smart to pack electronics in your checked bags but with the climbing gear, which is waaaay more costly to replace than the video camera, and Paul's 12 other cameras and various picture taking paraphernalia, we were out of available carry on space. But I digress; let's go back to the...

Away We Go

Sep 16, 2006 - Castell 'Alaro

Saturday 16th. September 2006 Another spectacular night with storms raging over us but by 8am the rain had eased. It still looked very dark all around so we decided to head east out of the mountains and seek some sun over Alcudia way. On exiting from the Soller tunnel we realised that the bad weather was only on the west side of the mountains so plans were changed and we headed up towards Orient to attack the Castell d'Alaro from the village. The weather improved significantly so we headed up through the olive groves and then onto the...
