May 29, 2013 - Girona-Besalu

We met our guide for the day (Miquel) at our hotel, and after a short adventure in which he got lost we finally found the highway to Girona. He is not from Barcelona, and his GPS was giving some rather obscure instructions. Girona is a city of about 100,000 people. It is 100 km from Barcelona. It has evidence of Roman origins and once had a thriving Jewish quarter. About 10 percent of the population were Jewish. There is a museum there documenting the history of the area. During some excavations, the remains of a yeshiva founded by...

Jul 10, 2010 - Gerona and the Dali Museum

Todays trip was great. We really loved Gerona. It was about a 1 1/2 hour drive north of Barcelona, close to the border of France. We took another air conditioned bus (yeah). Gerona's old quarter had visible structure from the Roman wall, 12th century church and baths, 14th century catholic church, and the old Jewish quarter was very interesting. Really incredible. We had a great tour guide who had a wonderful depth of knowledge. We had lunch at a nice cafe. I had a sandwich that I was not sure what I would get (Baine). Flat bread the size...

Jul 10, 2009 - waiting for driver's mate

Friday July 10th Here I am sitting in a small parking lot waiting on Jim arriving from Glasgow into Girona. - Girona is 100Kms north of Barcelona and mainly serves the Costa Blanca beach brigade. -- I'm sure Jim will love the flight with beach balls and inflatable ducks all over the aircraft. I can see the flights arrive from my location and there nearly all Ryan Air and they are coming in thick and fast -- 420pm -- There's another one as I write. Yesterday I drove down from just outside Carcassone to just outside Perpignan ( notice how I'm...

Aug 17, 2007 - Catalonia, Spain

Flight to Girona and then bus to LLoret on the Costa Brava. Beautiful weather and wonderful coastal walk. Next day the weather changed and stayed overcast for the rest of our stay in Spain. Every time we walked we got wet (sometimes absolutely soaked). After a couple of days went to Platja D'Aro. Had a room with a huge balcony larger than the room itself. Unable to use because of the persistent rain. Lynne won 80 Euros at the Casino and we then went to midnight fireworks. Walked to Palamos which had a fishing museum on one day and then St...

Sep 18, 2005 - We're off to Girona, Spain

We started our Spain experience in the city of Girona. At first, it was to be a quick stop because that is where Ryan Air flies into. It's about 60km. north of Barcelona close to the French border. Girona ended up being a very pleasant surprise. A town mixed with a new Spanish flare of late night tappa bars and fasionable stores, yet it still maintains a wonderful old mediterranean feel. A place both Patty and I felt we could be comfortable living.
