Jun 4, 2016 - Looking for the Beach Ended up at the Beginning of La Rambla Street

We were going to check out where the beaches were but ended up at the beginning of La Rambla Street...one of places on Susan's to see list. On the way, we saw many street vendors, are lunch at an amazing restaurant next to the pier called l'arroc, then walked toward La Rambla Street. Saw the Christopher Columbus Statue and several street performers posing with passers by for money. We checked out different places and types of electric bikes, scooters, cars and bicycle buggies to rent to ride down the La Rambla on another day. Made...

Jun 3, 2016 - Learning to Ride the Metro

On the agenda today....learn to ride the Metro...underground subway. Super easy getting to our destination, the La Sagrada Familia Church. A nice young man helped us get our tickets (the T10 gives you 10 tickets for about $10). We took the L4 and transferred to the L2 while being serenaded by a man playing a trumpet. We walked out to find this most beautiful church being worked on more than 100 years....still unfinished. We didn't buy tickets on-line before we left so there was a 4 hour wait or come back another day with a reserved ticket....

Jun 2, 2016 - Picasso Museum

We weaved our way through streets I couldn't pronounce (thanks to google maps) to arrive at the Picasso Museum.... then decided to find something to eat first at the Casa Delfin cafe....I had a green salad with fresh berries and oranges and chocolate dressing (who would have thought of chocolate in a salad but it was amazing) and a hamburger that was absolutely tender, tasty and delicious. Susan had asparagus spears with walnuts and prosciutto. Beautiful tiled ceiling. Fueled and ready to go we went back to the museum, many floors and rooms...

Jun 1, 2016 - On the Equinox

We had a leisurely breakfast at the new hotel and packed up to leave for the port at about 11:30 am. Got a taxi ordered but it took quite awhile to get there because of the - you guessed it - 4 day Metro strike. Traffic was heavy but we got to the beautiful big port and driven right up to the right ship by about 12:15. Check-in was very well organized and before we knew it we were sipping a welcome glass of champagne on board. I read in the newsletter they gave us that a welcome lunch for Concierge guests was available in the dining room...

Jun 1, 2016 - Arrival in Barcelona

Things that caught my eye in different airports: In Toronto, a young man, dressed stylishly with "a high hairdo" that reminded me of Prince...wish I could have gotten a picture...in Barcelona a Chinese woman dressed in red spandex pants and stiletto high-heeled shoes....wielding her suitcase, that was almost as big as she was, off the turnstile, then pushing it from behind as her heels made a click clack sound across the floor. Francisco was our taxi driver that took us to the Born district...narrow alleyway, graffiti on the doors that led...

May 30, 2016 - Barcelona still

First let me comment briefly on the afore-mentioned mosquito bites....the little buggers only attacked what was left out of the covers....I have 4 on my forehead, one on each eyelid, and the hands...oh the hands. Here's hoping the cruise ship pictures are at the END of the journey. Nuff said. Yesterday was spent mostly on the hop-on-hop-off bus as the previous day was alot of walking. As planned, with pre-bought tickets, we took one full loop of the red line for 2 hours in the morning, then hopped off the blue line at the Sagrada Familia...

May 28, 2016 - Barcelona

Before I get to Barcelona, a comment or two on our Avignon apartment. We loved the place (which will be reflected on our VRBO review) as it was really nice just have our own place. It was very quiet even though it was in the thick of things. One not so small problem though, was the fact that a rampant mosquito somehow got into the room and played havoc with poor Rose's head and shoulders. It (or they) seemed oblivious to the tender vittles mere centimetres away... Ha! However, on our final morning our host was very gracious and organized a...

May 17, 2016 - Day 25: Exploring Barcelona

We spent the day walking around and exploring everything Barcelona has to offer. Nice sunny day. Nice day for walking. The Sagrada familia was gorgeous! I kinda wish I had bought the tickets to go to the top. The Columbus monument elevator was broken also so we didn't get to experience the city for up high. Walking around La Rambla is very nice. My suggestion for next time would be to buy tickets of the places that you're gonna visit in advance. The places fill up and you have to come back hours later. Just buy all the tickets the morning...

May 16, 2016 - Day 24: Barcelona architecture 𯘍

Today starts the last week of my vacation. We woke up early, took a taxi to the train station and 3 hours later, arrived in Barcelona. I am completely in love with the architecture here. All the buildings are beautiful here! Yes Gaudi buildings are fantastic and whimsical but ALL buildings in Barcelona have their own charm. I couldn't put down my phone. Drained all the battery taking pictures. We visited La Pedrera (Casa Mila). The architecture is amazing! The city feels empty cuz is a religious holiday but I don't mind. It just gives me a...

May 14, 2016 - Barcelona, Spain

Hello from Barcelona! Another beautiful city on our tour. We were fortunate to see some of the cultural celebrations in the downtown when we arrived. We are not sure if they were associated with the Grand Prix race or the stat holiday on Monday. The food in Spain is ok but not going to make my top 10 list - lol. We have met some nice people here from London who have guided us a bit on the highlights of Spain. Much to Jamie's displeasure we took a tour bus to an outlet mall called La Roca Village - there were no deals unfortunately. We...

May 13, 2016 - Barcelona Beach

Our last day in Spain. We have developed the Spanish habit of racing for a train. Even though trains run every couple of minutes you still run for the one that is coming in or just arrived at the station. The longest we've had to wait for a train is about three minutes. Why do we run? We are still being trained to walk on the right side of the footpath though. Slow learners. It was fun watching the news this morning. If there are three or four people involved in the interview they all speak at once. We also heard this on the train into town...

May 12, 2016 - Gaudi's park and Rome under Barcelona

Raced off nice and early (9am) to see Gaudi's park. We didn't even have to ask for a seniors ticket - he gave it to us. Hmmm seniors here are over 65! Lucky we were out there early - the wait was only 2 1/2 hours. Fortunately there was a free part to wander around, lunch to get and time to muse and read. On reflection it was a waste of time. Not so crash hot - seen better in India. Oh such travelers. Back to Barcelona for a wonderful history of Barcelona museum. Really well presented and the audio guide topped it off. We walked for about 2...
