Sep 13, 2016 - Day 16 Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo

PHOTOS TO BE LOADED WHEN BETTER WIFI Overview It started raining before we had left Ponferrada. Got under shelter and put wet weather gear on. (Ie jacket and a backpack cover for me, poncho for John. Walked in the rain most of the day. Sometimes light and towards the end heavy at times. Stopped in a small bar for breakfast after about 5 km. Many pilgrims walking with ponchos that go over the backpack. Some with ponchos and umbrellas!!! Walking was not difficult today. Passed through some pretty little villages but due to rain I rarely...

Jun 16, 2016 - Last days at Bellavista, and travelling north.

The last few days have been really uncomfortably hot, in the mid 30°s, so we've been up early, got as much as possible done, then rested in the shade. Had a lovely last night with a meal on the beach with Julia and Ian, Blue came too, enjoyed his second swim of the day. Wednesday morning was slightly cooler, so by lunchtime we were ready for off. Said our goodbyes and headed north. Got to Malaga then turned inland towards Antiquera, some beautiful mountainous scenery all the way, climbing higher as we went. Antiquera is a pretty, clean...

Quant...

Sep 22, 2014 - Bob takes a break

Today is a sad day for me. Bob had some pretty painful problems with his feet and went to Madrid to seek some help. Doubt if he'll be coming back. Leaves me alone on the Camino. I walked slowly today ,losing my Sancho. It rained all day as I walked through vineyards similar to the Basque region. More rolling hills here and nice small towns. Some are in great disrepair and almost deserted. This town, Villafranca has a parador in it. I'll take Salvatore to it tonight for a glass of wine. Tomorrow is a harder day climbing the last big...

May 1, 2014 - Villafranca del Bierzo

We arrived in Villafranca del Bierzo on the first of May - a day when the church seems to hide and the pagans come out. Folks were walking in the street with wreaths of flowers and leaves. The bagpipes and drums signaled the arrival of townsfolk singing and dancing. Walking bushes joined in the dancing. STRANGE! Everyone participated - little children, teenagers (even boys) and adults. It seems to be a huge family event that took place during the early afternoon. It's now just after 7:00 p.m. and it sounds like the singing has begun again...

Sep 25, 2013 - Astorga to Villafranca del Bierzo

Something I just noticed today is that I had mis-copied the entry for the day from San Millan to Burgos. I have now put in the correct entry if you would like to read it. It seemed a long, long night for me. My cold kept me awake seemingly for ages but at least Maree slept well. Eventually the clock crept around to 7:30 and time to get up for breakfast. We boarded the bus and headed out of Astorga in the direction of some hills and some clouds. On the way to the start of the walk we stopped at a village of a local tribe, whose name escapes...

Jun 18, 2013 - Camino Day 2 - Astorga to Villafranca del Bierzo

As expected, a much tougher day but through pretty villages and along quiet roads so very enjoyable. We had a long hard uphill push of about 700m over 25km that was followed by 15km of an exhilarating, steep 900m descent. Then we rolled along for the rest of the day, nothing steep but enough ups that we were definitely feeling it by the end of the day. A few interesting stops along the way today. We had our now mandatory coffee and croissant break at a busy cafe and then stopped again to check out the home of guy who is suppose to be a real...

Jun 16, 2006 - Cacabelos

Again I have seen amazing change of scenery. I left the tumbled down mountain top village to climb higher over a pass. At the top is a cross with a big pile of stones. The idea is to leave a stone which you brought with you and represents your sins troubles etc. I then passed through a period of up and down ridges going through funny little villages which looked more Swiss than Spanish. Then down to the vallet arriving at a pretty village up past that to a city with much industry. It blows your mind a bit all of these changes. The last city...
