Apr 20, 2018 - A Day In Salamanca, Spain

One of the major cities of Spain that we did not get to visit last year was Salamanca, so when we saw it was included on this year's itinerary we were excited. Salamanca is a beautiful city and the heart of it is the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also called the Golden City because the stone used for the ancient buildings has aged to a golden tone that glistens in the sunlight. Everywhere you turn you see the warn honey colored architecture, intricately carved sandstone facades and plazas busy with university students and fabulous shops. The...

Sep 1, 2015 - Salamanca

Tuesday, September 1st. We lucked out with Camping Regio. It was a huge campground adjacent to a very large hotel and essentially empty. We had a lovely quiet night. The best of all was that the bus stop was at the entrance to the campground. The ride in was about 45 minutes but we think of these rides as a pretty inexpensive tour of the surroundings. The bus dropped us off fairly close to the old town and it was a short walk (albeit up hill) to the main square or plaza mayor. Like all the cities we have visited this main square built in...

Aug 31, 2015 - Salamanca via Puebla de Sanabria and Zamora

Monday, August 31st. We left Santiago with sprinkles in the air. I met "Sophie" "Richard's" replacement and I think she will do a fine job. However she did take us out of town through some narrow side streets that had us second guessing her but voila before too long we were on the highway. Before long we were driving though farmers fields growing cattle corn and what looked like almost dead sunflowers. As we drove along I couldn't help but wonder how the people who lived in these little villages in what seemed like shacks, felt about...

May 19, 2015 - Gathering with friends and at Espe's finca

Our wonderful group of friends of Espe, Isi, Paco, Angeles, Taqui and I gather at the home of Paco and Angeles to make wine or chorizo and at Espe's finca to pick the grapes, cherries, or to help with pruning and cleaning up. It is a long story but Espe co-owned the finca with another person. About four years ago this person wanted to sell and Taqui and I thought we might buy his half. There were complications with the court which prolonged the possibility of selling and buying. Fortunately for us because after time we decided it wasn't...

May 19, 2015 - Via Luces

As you know, it has been over a month since I last sent out a journal entry. Where does the time go?? I have been wanting to post photos but either didn't have the time or when the time came I didn't have the inclination. This afternoon with the wind howling outside even though the sun is shining I decided it was time to send some photos and text. This entry has only photos of an event that takes place every year a week or so after Easter called Via Luces. It is the idea of a priest in the neighboring pueblo of Fuenterrobles. Those who have...

Spring in Spain 2015

May 14, 2015 - Salamanca

We have spent the last two days checking out the town of Salamanca with its 79 historic buildings we didn't have a chance to see them all but a great little town full of history. We had our first night in hostel since travelling the kids loved the bunk beds - me and mark not so much. It was one of the most expensive accommodation that we have paid for so it wasn't very good value for money but it was central to where everything was. We took a little train ride around the city to take in all the sights. And then we had to hunt for the famous...

Apr 10, 2015 - Cherry blossoms in the Jerte Valley

It was just a week ago that our friend Beatriz, Taqui, and I took a drive south to the Jerte Valley to see the cherry blossoms. I have never seen so many cherry trees in one valley. They just go on and on but the blossoms were slightly past their prime. If we had gone about four days earlier it would have been spectacular. I think the pictures speak for themselves. Not much else happening. We've had rain the past two days so it's been colder. Makes you want to stay inside. Today we made the trip to Santa Marta, a town next to Salamanca,...

Apr 2, 2015 - From Portugal to Semana Santa

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter. Here we specnt a quiet day in the pueblo but the preceeding two weeks were busy ones. Two weeks ago we went for a day trip to Portugal to buy corks for bottling our wine. Taqui drove our van so all six of us could ride together. We six were Espe, Isi, Paco, Angeles, Taqui and I. We visited two Portuguese pueblos just across the Spanish border. They seemed almost deserted due to maybe the weather and the time of year. It was a cold day as you can see from the photos. It began to snow while we were eating...

Mar 22, 2015 - San Francisco to Madrid and Pedrosillo

After five months of being home, I flew to San Francisco on March 11 to attend the annual gathering of American Pilgrims on the Camino. This group is made up of people who have walked a Camino to Santiago de Compostela or are planning to walk. There were about 200 of us who gathered at the Vallombrosa Center in Menlo Park, California about a 30-minute drive south of San Francisco. If you would like to know more about the center here is the link: http://vallombrosa.org/ The gathering lasted four days from March 12-15. It was a wonderful four...

Dec 16, 2014 - salamanca, Spain and Lisbon

Had a great stay in Salamanca. The weather was ideal. We had a chance to walk round the old city. There was a photo opportunity around every corner with all the old buildings and architecture. The pictures are of our hotel with views over the city. Corrina and I have both started with a cold but had to carry on with our journey. We got to Lisbon about 2pm Tuesday. We've been to the aquarium this afternoon. Will try to visit the old quarter of Lisbon tomorrow depending on how we all feel. Temp got up to 17degrees today! Please remember not...

Dec 10, 2014 - Seattle and Victoria

I started this entry in early December after returning from these short trips but then decided to send it after the holidays. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and great start to 2015. ______________________ Thought I would share with you some photos from my stay the first week in December in both Seattle and Victoria, BC. I went to Seattle December 1 to meet up with my friend Linda who came to Seattle by train from Portland. We had four fun days in the big city going to the Chihuly Garden and Glass place, the zoo, Pike Place Market,...

Oct 18, 2014 - Mushrooms and landscapes

Thought I would post one last message with photos before I fly home this Wednesday, October 22. After lots of rain the sun came out and so did the mushrooms. Everyone goes crazy trying to find setas de cardo which grow in abundance in the fields around Pedrosillo. There are other edible mushrooms but then there are also those you shouldn't eat. We picked a few of those too but fortunately went to visit people who know their mushrooms. They looked through our harvest and threw out those that weren't good to eat. For me, the best part is...
