Fromista - 426.7 kms to Santiago When I woke up this morning it was raining. It rained all day. Today was a walk on the meseta (the flat area). But I called it the "muddy meseta". One hikes up the hill from Castrojeriz to the meseta - but the walk becames gumbo. Each step meant that you carrying another inch of the clay-like soil on you feet, and socks and trousers. It was slipping and sliding all along for the first 10 kms. The biggest concern was staying upright so you didn't fall into the muck. Walking through that mess was exhausting....

June 16 - We were thoroughly charmed by Castrojeriz in the form of 2 delightful young men of the village. One, Sergio owned the Casa Rural where we slept. He was not more than 30, had built this lovely hostel himself over 2 yrs and was planning to add a garden and pool. He was so proud of the pastoral view from our window. He did our laundry, and when we hung it to dry and sat on his terrace with a cold cerveza he came out and moved the drying rack so it didn't block our view. Nice headline, eh? It´s kind of true. I remember being a kid growing up in the 1970s. The big controversy was whether the Equal Rights Amendment should be added to the US Constitution. ERA would have given women in the US equal rights to men. It would have meant equal pay and that sort of thing. Really radical and scary stuff. The fear mongers warned that if ERA passed women and men would have to share bathrooms. I may have been a kid but that argument seemed rather weird.
