Jul 17, 2008 - Robben Island

Hi guys! Sorry for the delay in updating the site but our new Hostel in Mossel bay has a very limited Internet access so we have had to hunt an Internet Cafe down!! Ok...... Day 6 - Boat trip to Robben Island. This is the little island just North of Cape Town that Nelson Mandella (Along with hundreds of other Political Prisoners from the 1950's onwards) spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. It really had an Alcatraz sort of feel to it but obviously this wasn't quite the same as most of these inmates were jailed for protesting against...

Mar 26, 2008 - Easter Break Garden Route Road Trip

Ok, so I started to look in my past emails for past communication that I could put up here, but then I realized that is in the past. Instead I would rather start more recently, better late than never right? So in the last week of March we went on a road trip on the Garden Route, which runs east along the southern coast. Beige (our 1980 Mercedes, named for the colour) held up surprisingly well, considering we loaded her down with 5 strapping adults (3 of which are manly men and 2 elegant females) along with a state of the art tent from the...

Mar 25, 2008 - Mossel Bay

Today was relaxing, which was nice. We first went to a "feather palace" in Oudtshoorn, one of many mansions built in the Victorian era when the ostrich feather industry was booming. At that time, people were wearing ostrich feather boas and wearing them in hats and they were all the rage. Then came the automobile and it was too windy to wear feathers, so the popularity plummeted. We then went to an ostrich product store and did a little shopping. On the way out of town, we saw many ostrich farms, so we could see where they got all of the...

Dec 4, 2007 - Hermanus to Mossel Bay

We slept very well at the Zoete Inval Traveler’s Lodge. It was so very quiet and peaceful. The backpacker’s area was surrounded by a courtyard garden with a waterfall and small pond. The beautiful plants would have impressed even my mom! The owners are Dutch/Canadian after all. What a difference staying in a small town makes. Once we left the guesthouse we purchased a picnic breakfast to eat by the ocean. There was an ocean cliff walk that we strolled along after our breakfast only to find a pod of whales playing in the distance. We were...

Nov 9, 2006 - Africa: Cape town and environs Part 3

Continuing our trip along the coast of South Africa we stopped at several wineries in the heart of the wine country and al so the Karoo Desert where we visited an Aloe Feros production plant. Here various skin products are produced from the Aloe plant but different from the Aloe Vera plant grown in the US and South Amer. We passed through beautiful mt/ ranges and from low lands to deep blue high mts. One of the highlights was a visit to an Ostrich farm: did you know that:1. they are good eating, raised for food, leather products madde from...

Oct 17, 2006 - Victoria Bay, George, and Botlierskop Game Reserve

Day 11 - October 17, 2006 After a great breakfast at the Land's End B&B in Victoria Bay, we concluded that the drizzling rain that had continued on and off over the last two days wan't going to let up. In fact, it had become quite heavy at times. So, we shelved any ideas of getting a game of golf in at Pezula or Fancourt in Knysna or George and settled instead on first trying to catch up on the weblog in an internet café. And, we managed to find a mall in George where Mike & Katherine could get some warm and waterproof gear in case the...

May 24, 2006 - Knysna Heads and Mossel Bay

We woke to a beautiful sunny day, finally. The guest house owners were away, so there was no breakfast served there. The person in charge told Dave about a coffee shop in Knysna that we could try. So, we drove around and around and couldn't seem to find it. Finally, we realized we had gone by it two times but hadn't seen it because there was a big semi parked right in front of it. Anyway, we had breakfast there (the Coffee Connection). There were some shops near there so Marilyn finally bought a memory stick for her camera, having realized...

Apr 21, 2006 - Mossel Bay, Tsitsikamma Nat'l Park

Mossel Bay/ Garden Route April 19-21 We are now proud owners of a rented Toyota for 12 days . Everyone told us how beautiful S.A. is but you really have to see it to believe it. Much of it reminds us of Canada, the Rockies in particular, only South Africa is much cleaner. The roads are in good shape and the car drivers are very polite. There is no garbage along the roads. The worst roads here are better than the best roads in most of Kenya. Mossel Bay is quite developed and busy but we found a quaint B&B overlooking the harbour. The next...

Nov 21, 2005 - Chill day in Hermanus

I think I would have maybe liked to do the cage diving today but at 800 rand it's well out of my budget at this point in the trip. Plus, let's be honest here, I probably would have crapped myself! So I had a relaxing day in Hermanus while Andrew and Jake went looking for Jaws. I just did some random errands like laundry and shopping before meeting back up with the guys. They saw 5 sharks I think they said, the biggest being about 3.5 meters long! They didn't really bang right into the cage or anything, just swam right in front of it as the...

Kristy's World Tour!

Sep 12, 2005 - Lazy days

Saturday & Sunday follow a similar pattern; updating internet, lazing around drinking a few beers & playing pool, and a BBQ (braai). I had to move backpackers within Hermanus for Sat night due to lack of space, and found a very relaxed hostel on the other side of town. One of the other guest bought a snook (1m long local fish) which we all tucked into on the braai. Mid-morning Sunday it's time to Baz-off to Mossel Bay at the start of the Garden Route. Arrive mid-afternoon, and just laze around with a couple of American and another English...
