Sep 14, 2008 - Slovenia via Verona and Venice

Mid July to the first week of August We had a great flight from Athens to Milan with Easy Jet and from there jumped straight on a train to Verona. We arrived in Verona late afternoon and we took a bit of time finding our hostel. We were accommodated in separate eight bunk male/female dorms (which was a first for us)but as we hadn't been to sleep for thirty-six hours we accepted this arrangement gleefully. The next morning we set out in the rain for a look around. Sitting beside the fast flowing Adige River, Verona is a beautiful city with...

Sep 6, 2008 - Ljubljana

Had a great time in Lake Bled. Rick got a workout rowing us out to the island to the Church of Mary the Queen where we rang the wishing bell. No motorized boats on the lake - nor do they believe in equipping the rowboats with lifejackets. We carried on to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Stayed at a great campground with an amazing waterpark. A "Miss Ljubljana" competition of some sort was going on - not to worry Nicole, you would have won easily. We have had great food and are starting to sleep a little better thanks to our handy...

Aug 24, 2008 - Ljubljana, Slovenia

Sometimes traveling can be pretty stressful... Yesterday was one of those days. I arrived in Ljubljana late last night, cold, hungry and wet. It was a long day of travel, much longer than I expected. I caught a 9:00 am bus from Castelrotto and had to take 4 trains through Northern Italy and Austria to get here. The train leaving Bolzano was late, which caused me to miss all my other connecting trains. What should have been a 5.5 hour trip took 13 hours! An entire day of running from one train to the next, then having to wait in some podunk...

Aug 12, 2008 - Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ravi -- Ljubljana (the "j" sounds like a "y" = something like "loo-blee-ah-nah"), was a surprising gem in E Europe, promised for most of the other cities, but truly delivered here. And good thing since it was a chore to get here! In Budapest, we were trying to figure out our options to get to this city, the capital of Slovenia (the first country to leave the former Yugoslavia). Apparently, no buses went there, and the only trains from Budapest through the Lake Balanton region arrived into Ljubljana at either past 9pm or at 2 in the...

Jun 10, 2008 - Tuesday 10 June - Ljubljana

Walked to the bakery and bought some croissants then went to light the stove to boil water but alas no gas. Drove to a coffee shop. Emma said her coffee was the worst she had had in Croatia. Back on the road. It turns out our gas is butane not lpg or propane as in GAZ French camping gas. It has been a bit of a holy grail we have carried our treasured gaz cylinder into petrol stations, campgrounds, supermarkets and hardware stores in our quest for the holy fluid but without success. A long day on the road. Up and down the windy country roads...

Apr 26, 2008 - Ljubljana, Slovenia

Well, I've finally left Vienna and made my way south to Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana (pronounced Loob-lee-ah-nah). I wasn't sure what to expect from Slovenia because I hadn't really heard much about it as a tourist destination. Boy was I surprised! I couchsurfed with 3 roommates who were more than happy to tour me around the entire country. One of the roommates, Damien, is actually French but he is working in Slovenia as a naval architect (designing super yachts for Seaway). He was such a kind host and made sure I saw all that Slovenia had...

Oct 9, 2007 - Train to ljubljana, slovenia

had a long but fantastic train trip from vienna to ljubljana, slovenia. 6.5 hours ish but most of it worth it with the scenery. i think we picked a good time to visit-austria and slovenia are very green countries and all the leaves are just changing. so very scenic, plus passing by all these little villages and some some large cities along the rail line. here;s what zou learn on the train: if siting in a compartment with elderlz austrains and sloveniens, they wont speak much english but they will have a cousin in canada. including one in...

Aug 17, 2007 - Ljubljana

Today we went to the Postojna Caves, very impressive! Back to Ljubljana, Primoz took us to his favorite panini place, excellent! Walk around town a bit and then off to dinner at Tivoli Park, a beautiful place. Ate at a Serbian restaurant, delicious food, as it has been the whole trip. Out for a couple of drinks afterwards - the caipirinha research continues! :-)

Apr 5, 2007 - Postjana caves

Alfred and I decided to take a day trip to Postjana to see the caves down there. Caught a bus down there and then walked out to the caves. An open air mini train takes you deep into the caves which are amazing inside. The train stops and then everyone gets seperated into groups according to language. Interesting. But we went on about a 2 km walk through the caves. It's massive inside. The tour ends at the Concert hall. At one time they used to have concerts in there because of the great accoustics. But now it is too humid in there and would...

Apr 4, 2007 - Slovenia!!!

Breakfast at the hostel was awesome this morning. Scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, cereal, bread, buffet style. Loved it! I got on the train to Ljubljana, Slovenia. I shared a compartment with an Austrian girl studying in Ljubljana. She had been to Canada before, in BC and Banff so that was cool. She loved it there. At the border between Austria and Slovenia the train gets stopped and guards come on to check passports. I got a stamp in mine, hooray!! Found my way to the hostel. Very friendly people. Dropped my stuff and went out to see the...

Sep 30, 2006 - Ljubijana

Ljubijana is the capital of Slovenia. Just try saying that 10x fast. Or, like us, just try saying it! We spent the day here instead of a few. We are tired of Europe and are moving out ASAP to head to Egypt. Just want the change of scene and we cant wait to see what's next. This place is about the size of Saskatoon and its quite pretty. Again, sort of expensive, and although they have Europe's largest shopping district, its lame. Don't go, don't be fooled. We were. But, the city structures themselves are really pretty and everyone here is...
