Sep 12, 2017 - We are in Slovenia but we have never left Croatia

Another rainy day and only 50 degrees! Our passports were stamped when we left Slovenia a week ago and entered Croatia. When we crossed through Bosnia they were never stamped that we left Croatia or entered Bosnia but stamped upon entering Croatia when leaving Bosnia (never an entrance or exit stamp for Bosnia). On returning north no stamps on the pass through Bosnia. As we got to the Slovenia border there was no stamp for leaving Croatia but one for entering Slovenia! Because the line for all passports was long, we went in the EU line.So...

Aug 13, 2017 - Ljubjana, Slovenja

This a.m. we awakened in a little corner of paradise. Outside was Worthersee Lake, a long narrow lake squeezed in between scenic mountains. Sailboats, paddle boarders, water skiers and the occasional pleasure boat were enjoying being on the water under the sun. Downstairs a delicious breakfast awaited us. After we headed out on the 2 lane highway to Klagenfurt, turned south on E652/91 totally defying the GPS. We left busy traffic behind as we wound up Loibltal Pass (9367). Craggy grey-beige rock, green forest greeted us as we poked along...

May 29, 2017 - Leaving Ljubljana (on our way home!)

Monday,May 29, 2017 Travelling Home Up at 7:30 am, shower, breakfast and packing for the flight home. We are being picked up by a taxi to take us to the airport at 11:30 am. Our flight to Frankfurt leaves at 1:25 pm. We walked down the very, very quiet streets this Monday morning. Hardly any tourists and all the residents are back at work. Very hot again. We are wearing jeans in preparation for our flights and made sure to walk in the shade. We ended up at the market which was open again - smaller than Saturday though. Eke bought a top that...

May 28, 2017 - Lazy Day in Ljubljana

Sunday, May 28, 2017 Ljubljana After a leisurely breakfast and getting ready, we walked throught the antique market. We were planning to do a guided city tour but it was getting very hot so we decided to do a river cruise instead. The cruise was an hour long and not very exciting and interesting, but rather peaceful with a little breeze which was sorely needed! Today is going to be 30 degrees Celsius. Brian was not feeling very energetic after our smoothies and cake (of course!) so he decided to go back to the room and relax. Eke wanted to...

May 27, 2017 - Bled to Ljubljana

Saturday, May 27, 2017 Bled - Ljubljana We actually did NOT have to get up at 6:30 am! We enjoyed getting up at a leisurely pace, showered, packed and decided to walk into town (Bled) and have breakfast somewhere else. It is a long weekend in Slovenia and the traffic was already very heavy, especially buses with tourists. We were wondering what this place is like in high tourist season! Again beautiful weather today. We walked close to the lake shore and again enjoyed the views. We decided on breakfast at the Park hotel on the outside...

May 15, 2017 - Zagreb to Ljubljana

Once again a day that feels like it was wasted as most of it was spent getting to Ljubljana by train. Although the journey itself only took 2.5 hours it was in the middle of the day so impacts what you can do around it. The train trip was enjoyable through some beautiful country and villages, much of it alongside the river Sava. Our apartment is again very good and supposedly in the most modern building in the city. It was certainly trendy and had some great innovations. After settling in we went for a walk into the historic town centre,...

Oct 3, 2016 - Slovenia

Having finished our short stay in Germany, Greg and I are now off to explore new regions—ones neither of us has ever been to. We will be on a two week tour of Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia. I really dislike reading dry history facts so in preparation for this trip I read the book, The Bridge on the Drina. It actually won a Noble prize for literature, not for the inanimate structure the title is named for, but for an insightful look at how different cultures (Jewish, Catholic, and Muslim) can live harmoniously and how wars influence that...

Jul 6, 2016 - Day 4 - Drazen Petrovich's Revenge/One Short Day in Ljubljana

Flash back to day 2. You will recall we went to the Zagreb cemetery. It's a little bit outside of the city, and it's more like a forest that also happens to have gravestones. \ We spent a little bit longer than we had planned to spend, because once I got there, I started wondering which, if any, famous Croatians were buried there. And there are quite a few famous Croatians buried there, but only one who (I think) was somewhat famous outside of Croatia, at least in the United States: Former NBA star Drazen Petrovich, who was tragically...

Croatia 2016

May 4, 2016 - Miscellaneous stuff

On the way back from Lake Bled we stopped at a traditional Slovenian restaurant for lunch. Downstairs they had a gingerbread making operation that had been started more than 200 years earlier. We watched as they made gingerbread which did not have ginger, but instead used honey. They made intricately decorated hearts and other items and showed us items that had been made more than 60 years ago and were stil intact. Heart story. The hearts are intricately decorated and many have a mirror in the center. The story is that boys would give them...

May 3, 2016 - Ljubljana and Lake Bled

Went on a city tour of Ljubljana. A number of bridges span the Ljubljana River around the old town. Each bridge is different. There is the triple bridge with three paths, the new bridge with a plexiglass floor, the dragon bridge with mean and scary looking dragons (renamed by the locals as the mother-in-law bridge), etc. Most of the buildings were designed by an architect named Plecnik. Beautiful architecture and the architect is described as quirky. Beautiful and progressive city. The parking has been moved underground and there are...

Apr 12, 2016 - Bus to Ljubljana

4/12 Two hours through countryside which at first looked just like you'd find in Wisconsin. Closer to Ljubljana the mountains rose around us - snow capped peaks up to 10,000'...beautiful weather too. Once in town, the bus station right next to the train station and easy walk to river which runs through town and old town. After a 20 min. walk we checked out HI hostel but it only operates in July and August. Next we went to Sleeping Beauty Hostel - very cheap, all dorms but decided to continue our search...many hostels in this area...and...
