May 4, 2013 - Venice & Slovenia
Last Wednesday we set off from St Tropez along the very attractive and evocative Côte d’Azur, past Nice and even caught sight of the rooftops of some apartment complexes in Monte Carlo. Progress was understandably not fast; we were avoiding autoroutes both on cost grounds and a desire to see more of the area. Crossed into Italy expecting our progress to improve. Wrong! Firstly, the coastline to St Remo was spectacular with the edge of the Alps dropping dramatically into the blue Med, the road was single carriageway and passing through...

Jan 14, 2013 - Slovenia - Cadrg
Hi we went to Cadrg, we had a massive snow ball fight . Nick loved cooking the cheese on the wood stove. I had a go on the sled and nearly crashed into a tree. We had a great lunch in the house that Nona grew up in. Today we woke up to 20 cm of snow in Tolmin and had another snow ball fight. Nick got hit by a snowball and it went all the way down his back :). I had fun playing with all my cousins especially Anze. Have fun at school today, Anze.

Jan 10, 2013 - Slovenia
Our first meal in Slovenia after arriving by train, we didn't need dinner after that. Today we visited the caves. We entered into the caves on a little train that carried us to the the caves, it felt more like a roller coaster. There was a stalagmite that was sixteen meters tall. We learnt that the Germans stored petrol but when the partisans blew it up 200 meters of the cave are still black because of the explosion. We met Aunty Ines and Ziga (zig-a) he speaks English from all the cartoons he watches eg like a black American. Tomorrow we...

Nov 20, 2012 - Ljubljana
@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND In the interest of expediency, here are some excerpts from the Lonely Planet – Central Europe chapter on Slovenia: It’s a pint-sized place, with a surface area of just more than 20,000 sq km and 2 million people. But ‘good things come in small packages’, and never was that old chestnut more appropriate than in describing Slovenia. Slovenia has been dubbed a lot of different things by its PR machine – ‘Europe in Miniature’, ‘The Sunny Side of the Alps’, ‘The Green Piece of Europe’ – and they’re all true. Ljubljana...

Nov 18, 2012 - Ljubljana our apartment
http://www.apartment-ljubljana.info/ Aida Apartments; this is the link to the apartment it has a few pictures and a location map. We are about a 10 minute walk from the main open marketplace in the centre of the old town. The apartment was built about 2005 and has a contemporary feel, we initially anticipated to get something in the historic centre but car accommodation was just not practical as this area has been converted to a pedestrian precinct. Our current lease will take us to the end of January and from there we hope to get moving...

Oct 23, 2012 - Lake Bled
After a late start, both us had a rough night with our respective colds, we headed out for Lake Bled. Very foggy again even though the sun did come out around noon. But still very hazy with limited visibility. Very few tourists there so it was really nice. However we had to wait until there were 8 people before the Pletna boat (rowed like a gondola) to Otok Island would leave. Beautiful ride, beautiful views from the island, and a pretty church. If you can ring the church bell 3 times with one pull, your wish will come true. We both tried....

Oct 22, 2012 - Ljubljana
The previous evening we had changed rooms after checking in as our room did not receive wifi (too far from the router!). So this morning we both woke up having not slept well as the room was too hot (central air turned off for the season) and the street traffic too noisy when we opened the window... off we traipsed to the front desk! So we were moved one more time to a room with wifi and a/c! Judi B stayed in for the morning as she had caught the Judi C bug. Judi C (with camera in hand) took off to explore the city. The center of the city...

Oct 21, 2012 - Leaving Croatia
Woke up to another gray day in Rovinj. We walked through the old town and up to the Church of St. Euphemia. She was a young wealthy girl arrested, tortured and killed in Diocletian's time. Her marble sarcophagus was found years later in the Adriatic by some Rovinj fisherman and taken to a local church. Each year on St. Euphemism's saints day (9/16) the front panel of her sarcophagus is opened to view her face (yuck). Then on to Piran to see the Slovenian Riviera. Very pretty seaside area but due to the haze you could barely see across the...

Sep 24, 2012 - Lake Bled, Republic of Slovenia
It's become ironic how I started my post from Vienna about a dark and stormy morning! We're sitting here on Monday night (it's dark!), watching the lightning flashes and listening to the thunder roll and rain pound on the window. It has been a fantastic, and too brief stay, in this beautiful country. First of all, we are in Slovenia, not to be confused with Slovakia (the eastern half of the former Czechoslovakia), or Slovonia (a region in neighboring Croatia). Slovenia is a small country, tucked into the corner between Italy,...
