Feb 15, 2005 - Bratislava, Slovakia

We left Vienna on another cold morning and headed to Bratislava. We didn't get to see much in Vienna due to the fact that all of the museums were closed on Monday. We could have stayed longer, but I before we left I had found a hockey game in Bratislava at a cool website called www.eurohockey.net. I had never even heard of Bratislava before this, but after looking at a map it is really close to Vienna. Only about an hour by train. The reason I was looking for hockey games is that the National Hockey League is currently on strike, so a lot...

Oct 21, 2004 - Bratislava

Capital city, and unfortunately our only planned stop in Slovakia. Arrived in late arvo after long day hauling across Czech via three buses totalling abour 7 hours. Couldn't find hostel to stay - all fully booked. Who would have thought Bratislava on a Thursday night. Oh well. Ended up better anyway as we found an city apartment for only a little extra. Very central and nice to have our own place for a couple nights. Only downside was that despite apartment promised a full kitchen - it provided three small glasses only. No bowls, cutlery,...

Sep 25, 2004 - SLOVAKIA

BRATISLAVA After a rush for the train due to being on the wrong platform, we left Austria after 1 night. An uneventful 5 hour journey later and we arrived in Bratislave, Slovakia. A bit of head scratching followed the arrival, this was due to us arriving at some backwater station and not the main one as planned, thus meaning the directions to the hostel we had proved useless. Nothing a couple of smart kids like ourselves couldn't cope with tho and we were soon at our destination. A 5 min walk would lead us into the old town and introduce...

Sep 7, 2004 - Hiking in Poland and Slovakia

Aug 31st. Our first day in the Tatra mountains it rained all day. The rain stopped briefly in the morning so we set off for a low level walk but the rain just got heavier and heavier, so we aborted and turned back. The next day (Sept 1) dawned bright and sunny so we set off early to do a long ridge walk. We went up in a cable car and views were fab. The walk started well but then the clouds came down and then was a 300m climb up a pinnicale which was very steep. We thought about going somewhere different but pressed on. Got nearly to the...

Aug 10, 2004 - Fares and Fines from Bratislava

Tram fare enforcers, like P.E. teachers and Mormons, are recognizable around the world if you know what to look for. When Drew and I stepped onto the tram in Vienna, he immediately pointed out the tram cop. A potbellied, balding man with a fanny pack around his waist and a small briefcase. His untucked shirt hung over the fanny pack, but when he sat he leafed through it and we made him as a cop. He carried a fat wallet, probably full of fine receipts and his official identification. The last thing that happened in Bratislava was a fat,...

Jul 17, 2004 - D: By hydroplane to Bratislava, Slovakia

Hello all! I feel like we've flown around the world several times since we last wrote. But, alas, we only sped through 5 countries...it was a bit of a dizzying pace. A quick synoposis: A brief stop in Bratislava, Slovakia before we continued onto Prague, Czech Republic. Three days of driving through Germany, then a quick stop in Venice on our way to Croatia. Writing it out it doesn't look like much, but it felt like we were constantly on the move. A week on the island of Hvar helped slow us down, but I am getting ahead of...
