Apr 14, 2018 - Hakone to Singapore

Caught the bus to the Hakone Ropeway (which is a cable car), for supposedly fantastic views of Mt Fuji, and for volcanic activity. However, Mt Fuji was hiding again. But I did see spurting steam & sulphur yellow deposits. A small eruption occurred in 2015, leading to a second emission of gases

Mar 25, 2018 - Singapore - Orchids and Audrey

Singapore harbor is busy. We are at the Marine Bay cruise terminal with a large Chinese cruise ship for the next two days. Immigration is crisp and efficient but there are a lot of people to process. Not much shopping at the terminal , just a money changer, electronic phone accessories and a small convenience store. Viking has a shuttle over to Marine Bay mall with all high end stores. Marine Bay is also where the Marina Bay Sands Sky park is. The Sky park spans three skyscraper towers 57 floors high. Skies are threatening as we board the...

Mar 25, 2018 - Singapore Singapore

History: Spread across 63 islands at the tip of Malay peninsula, Singapore is the worlds only Island City,State and Country. 30 miles across and 15 miles long with 10 million people. Established in1819 by sir Stamford Raffles it grew into a sophisticated metropolis. No chewing gum or drugs. Like their criminal enforcement, you kill you die you sell or do drugs you die you throw cigarettes on the street or any litter $300 after 3 Times 2 months community service. Cleanest and savest city/country I have ever seen. Whoa, 500 sq ft apartment...

Jan 24, 2018 - Singapore

For Marianne, our stopover in Singapore was a journey into the past. She had lived there as a child in the late 60s. We also discovered its architectural and culinary delights and marvelled in the efficiency of its services from 'hawkers' food courts to Changi Airport. We came away feeling that Singapore had earned its reputation as a city and country of tomorrow.

Jan 20, 2018 - Singapore - Southeast Asia Cruise

We returned to Singapore and the Mandarin Orchard hotel. While our bags were making it from the ship to the hotel, we were taken on another tour. This time we stopped by the Merlion Park for awhile and then to China Town for a farewell Seafood Lunch. I wasn’t looking forward to the ride home and the Philippine Airlines was late again, but I didn’t wear the back brace this time and that seemed to help. We've only been home three days and I've been fighting a cold and trying to finish this journal entry. We leave again in two days for South...

Jan 9, 2018 - Back in Singapore

Tuesday 9 Jan 2018 and our latest cruise has come to an end. We disembarked in Singapore at 9.30 am and got through passport control just before 10 am, then just a quick taxi ride to the Pan Pacific, our hotel for tonight. If we can drag ourselves out of our suite we might get in a little sightseeing this afternoon (before cocktails in the Club Lounge). Our flight back to Perth is not until Wednesday evening so perhaps we'll get in a bit more sightseeing tomorrow as well. Our suite will provide us with great views of the light show in...

Jan 8, 2018 - Singapore - Southeast Asia Cruise

Well, after numerous starts and stops, Philippine Air finally got their "stuff" together and got us to Singapore early this morning, as in almost 2AM. Total travel time, so far, is 24 hours, with 20 of those hours on the most uncomfortable seats we've had in awhile. We checked into our room at the beautiful Mandarin Orchard hotel, centrally located in downtown Singapore surrounded by ALL the very expensive stores. Our guide said that the area we are staying in is compared to Times Square, New York. She also mentioned that Singapore has...

Dec 28, 2017 - Batam Island and Reflections on Indonesia

BATAM ISLAND We changed our plans and instead of going to the Gilli Islands off Bali in Indonesia we flew two hours from Yogajakarta to a small Indonesian Island off Singapore. We flew with Lion Air a low cost airline, who were good. Getting to the Radisson hotel was easy, I didn’t quite understand the taxi queue system but think we were probably in a taxi sooner than we should have been. The Radisson was one of only a few five star hotels on Batam. We had a really good last minute deal with a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the pool...

Dec 19, 2017 - Let the cruising begin

After arriving safely on Saturday we've spent the last couple of days really getting to know Singapore. The weather has been great, temps around the mid to high 20s and, for Singapore, relatively low humidity and virtually no rain. We've been staying at the Marriott, Tang Plaza on Orchard Road which has been superb and the Club Lounge has been great with a fine selection of food and plenty of beer, wine and spirits options to keep us happy in the evenings. While in Singapore we've been on the hop on hop off bus to get a good overview of the...

Aug 8, 2017 - WE HATE TO LEAVE

Well, I don't want to talk about it! Suffice to say, we are on our way to do some field research for last cycle's history and geography and that is my excuse. It wasn't on my bucket list but the bargain price was enough to make it justifiable. Besides, my medieval history really needs some invigoration. So we loaded up one piece of luggage each, and only one, as the next bags on cheapo air could buy another ticket in some places. This proved to be quite a challenge. So, where to...anyone?

Jul 27, 2017 - Back to Singapore

My last day in Bali was lazy. I ate. Wrote a little in this journal. Didn't do much else. The next morning I got up to head to the airport. Flight to Singapore was uneventful. I had scheduled a hotel in the woods not too far from the airport. Just wanted to relax. So, now I'm at the airport about to start my trek home. This has been a crazy trip. Too many pieces to make sense of. But, I'm glad to be headed home.

Jul 10, 2017 - Singapore

Leaving Indonesia found us stopped off in Singapore for a day. Fast paced, big city life, quite a change from Gili Air. Less than 24 hours here, we got just a taste of the city. Stumbled upon a free event downtown with food and beer vendors, live music, and great views of the city. Then we visited Gardens by the Bay, an interesting fusion of architecture and horticulture. The very next day we were off to Malaysia!
