Jan 9, 2018 - Back in Singapore

Tuesday 9 Jan 2018 and our latest cruise has come to an end. We disembarked in Singapore at 9.30 am and got through passport control just before 10 am, then just a quick taxi ride to the Pan Pacific, our hotel for tonight. If we can drag ourselves out of our suite we might get in a little sightseeing this afternoon (before cocktails in the Club Lounge). Our flight back to Perth is not until Wednesday evening so perhaps we'll get in a bit more sightseeing tomorrow as well. Our suite will provide us with great views of the light show in...

Dec 28, 2017 - Batam Island and Reflections on Indonesia

BATAM ISLAND We changed our plans and instead of going to the Gilli Islands off Bali in Indonesia we flew two hours from Yogajakarta to a small Indonesian Island off Singapore. We flew with Lion Air a low cost airline, who were good. Getting to the Radisson hotel was easy, I didn’t quite understand the taxi queue system but think we were probably in a taxi sooner than we should have been. The Radisson was one of only a few five star hotels on Batam. We had a really good last minute deal with a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the pool...

Dec 19, 2017 - Let the cruising begin

After arriving safely on Saturday we've spent the last couple of days really getting to know Singapore. The weather has been great, temps around the mid to high 20s and, for Singapore, relatively low humidity and virtually no rain. We've been staying at the Marriott, Tang Plaza on Orchard Road which has been superb and the Club Lounge has been great with a fine selection of food and plenty of beer, wine and spirits options to keep us happy in the evenings. While in Singapore we've been on the hop on hop off bus to get a good overview of the...

Aug 8, 2017 - WE HATE TO LEAVE

Well, I don't want to talk about it! Suffice to say, we are on our way to do some field research for last cycle's history and geography and that is my excuse. It wasn't on my bucket list but the bargain price was enough to make it justifiable. Besides, my medieval history really needs some invigoration. So we loaded up one piece of luggage each, and only one, as the next bags on cheapo air could buy another ticket in some places. This proved to be quite a challenge. So, where to...anyone?

Jul 27, 2017 - Back to Singapore

My last day in Bali was lazy. I ate. Wrote a little in this journal. Didn't do much else. The next morning I got up to head to the airport. Flight to Singapore was uneventful. I had scheduled a hotel in the woods not too far from the airport. Just wanted to relax. So, now I'm at the airport about to start my trek home. This has been a crazy trip. Too many pieces to make sense of. But, I'm glad to be headed home.

Jul 10, 2017 - Singapore

Leaving Indonesia found us stopped off in Singapore for a day. Fast paced, big city life, quite a change from Gili Air. Less than 24 hours here, we got just a taste of the city. Stumbled upon a free event downtown with food and beer vendors, live music, and great views of the city. Then we visited Gardens by the Bay, an interesting fusion of architecture and horticulture. The very next day we were off to Malaysia!

Jun 25, 2017 - Singapore trip day 3

Well the big day is here. Happy Birthday to me!!!! Up for a coffee and discussions and then out the door around 10ish. Went back to Cuppage Road as we knew we could get a full breaky there. Had my full English breaky and then loaded everyone into the taxi for the trip to Alexandra Road and Harley Dealership. Spent a fair bit of time there going through all the racks and shelves and spent my full amount that I had put aside. Only ended up with 2 bags full and also met Dorothy, who happens to be the Manager of Harley Davidson Singapore. She...

Jun 25, 2017 - Singapore trip day 2

Saturday 24 June 2017 and Brenda and I are up and about at around 11ish. We sat around had a cuppa tea and thought. " what the hell are we going to do now". Well, I did, Brenda wouldn't say that. So we discussed we needed some food and water. That was when we set off on the long trip round! We trotted off at a steady clip for the first 300 metres before we had to cross over to Scott Road near the White House Café/Restaurant. That's when I thought, oops, better help Brenda cross the road or the wife might get a bit ticked off if she was...

Jun 16, 2017 - Singapore

OK, seems like time to catch up with this journal. Sorry for the lateness. After two long flights, I arrived in Singapore on Thursday morning, smelling like I hadn't had a shower in two days. My best girl arrived the day before. She was staying with a friend and had asked if I wanted her to find me someone to stay with. Her friends in Singapore couldn't put me up, but they asked some friends, who asked some other friends, and suddenly I was staying with this family that--as near as I could tell--no one really knew. Jeff and Karen are...

Jun 1, 2017 - Like Sands through an hourglass ....

..... these are the times of our lives. Well we made it! Now to top off the wonderful flight, we were met at the arrival gate by a Marina Bay Sands 'travelling concierge'. I mentioned we were coming here for our 35th anniversary and they gave us complimentary limousine transfer. We were taken directly to the immigration point and then once through there, we were directed to the baggage carousel and no sooner had we collected our bags; we were ushered to the exit point. The limousine was waiting and we were handed over to Tony, who gave us a...

May 24, 2017 - Singapore we love you!

We were both very excited about arriving in a modern clean city and we have not been disappointed. We booked our first dorm and shared bathroom hostel, however it was great fun and very private although getting to the 'pod' where we slept was a little challenging in our old age! Our first evening we decided to walk to the Marina area and even the walk was beautiful. We passed cute little bars all very different in their appearance with colonial style shutters all painted in different colours. Next there were sky scrappers which are of...

Mar 30, 2017 - arrive in Singapore

More advantages of flying Business Class: You get off the plane first, go through immigration before the lines get long, get to the luggage carousel as the first bags come off - they are yours, of course. Then you have to wait for your ride to the hotel, because they can't believe you are already here. We could get used to this! Singapore is an island is a country is a city. Like Hong Kong it started as a fishing village and gained prominence as a shipping transfer point under British rule. It used to seeem like a second banana, but now...
