Sep 16, 2011 - Parc National des Volcans: Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla Trek Photos Group Dinner Ruhengeri Photos I woke up long before my alarm this morning, in part because the dorm room bed mattress was horrendous and in part because this was the day I would be seeing Gorillas. If you were to ask anyone in the group they would all have told you that this was the day that made them book this trip. It was the highlight for all of us. Putting on my hiking clothes and boots felt very familiar and after all these weeks on the truck and eating, eating and more eating, I was pumped to get...

Jan 19, 2011 - Golden Monkey Trecking

June 27, 2010 We were collected this morning by our driver for the next three days, a local man called Innocent. He was very friendly but quite honestly he could’ve been Satan and it would’ve been a welcome relief from the One Love Hotel. We stopped to pick up some water and snacks for our treks and headed to the Memorial Museum here in Kigali. The memorial museum here looks back at the 1994 genocide of the Tutsis here in Rwanda and the history of the country leading up to the acrimonious divide between the main tribes – the Hutu and Tutsi....

Mar 27, 2008 - Wow - Gorillas...

Wow - what a day! We got up at 5.30am to have 6am breakfast which was slow again but had pancakes so that was good when they did arrive! We then set off to the Gorilla Trekking HQ and got checked in! We were split into groups of 8 people and given a briefing about what to expect and how to behave and then it was off! Joseph tried to take us to the start point in the car which is 4x4 but as we had had so much rain we got stuck and it was decided that we should just walk from there as the other vehicles were also stuck. It was suggested that...

Jan 25, 2008 - Rwanda - Mountain Gorillas

Day 58 Fri 25th Jan Gorilla Trekking, RWANDA ---------------------------------------------- After flying into Uganda from Nairobi and spending a night in the capital, Kampala, we had another long day of driving and border crossing into Rwanda - where permits had been pre-arranged for us to visit the rare and captivating mountain gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla Berengei), of which there are only about 700 remaining in the world. My visit to these gentle giants in their natural environment was a unique and wonderful experience - one I'll never...
