Brouilleur Signal

Aug 22, 2010 - ALTO DOURO

We spent a day travelling by car along the Douro River from Porto to Pinhao. I was amazed as the temperature steadily climbed - reaching 41 degrees celcius at our destination! The Cassa do Visconde (where we are staying) is an old Manor house with beautiful internal tile decorated rooms, a swimming pool (yah!) and a superb dining terrace overlooking the valley. We are surrounded by vines - this is real port wine country. I think I've died and gone to heaven.

Aug 19, 2010 - Douro Valley

Today I picked up my rental car, a Fiat Panda, which is quite tiny. The girl at the rental agency looked at me and said 'I don't think you will fit" so I said, "Well, we better see shouldn't we? because if I don't, there's going to be a problem". I had my doubts, but it's got quite a bit of headroom. I've nicknamed it the gutless wonder, since I have to floor it whenever I go up a hill and it just barely chugs along "I think I can, I think I can" i Driving up winding, two-lane roads into the Douro valley was a bit stressful. Aug 11, 2010 - Quite the two days

Our day in Porto yesterday was great. We arrived in the morning and headed down to the waterfront in search of a cruise on the Douro River. There are many companies that do this and are usually affiliated with one of the Port Houses located in Porto. The north shore of the Douro at Porto is a UNESCO protected site. They are working very hard to refurbish and renovate these buildings - and all of Porto on the north shore - starting from the water front and working their way inland. They have a long way to go to bring the City up to standards...
